To wonder if Americans actually like hersheys chocolate

Colleague returned from a trip to the states and brought various sweets back including Hershey chocolate.

I tried a bit and it tastes terrible. I mean really. I have a sweet tooth so can cope with how sugary it is but there's a weird sicky flavour I can't place.

Is this how Americans like chocolate? Or is it just that international brands maybe don't get imported there or are expensive?

It hasnt gone down well at work. Huge bag and after everyone tried it once no one went back for more Grin

Is it actually classed as chocolate? I thought it was candy.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 12/02/2022 19:38

It's horrible isn't it - I tried some once and it was vile - kind of a cheesy / vomity taste.

NotRainingToday · 12/02/2022 19:39

I have an American colleague and he likes it. He also eats Dairy Milk and doesn't really discriminate between them even though they are absolutely not the same
I've managed to introduce him to Bounty and Yorkie though, so that's a step forward.

polavary · 12/02/2022 19:39

It’s so gross!! It tastes of vomit. I don’t understand at all Confused

Bagelsandbrie · 12/02/2022 19:40

My whole family is American and they used to beg me to bring Cadburys over (before it changed) as they all think Uk chocolate is so much nicer….! I can’t stand Hersheys.

HyacinthsHydrangeas · 12/02/2022 19:41

Am American, can confirm I like Hershey's chocolate. I don't care for, for instance, a bar of Dairy Milk, though I can see why people would enjoy it. Just a matter of preference I guess!

nightwakingmoon · 12/02/2022 19:42

It’s to do with the milk preservation process they use in American chocolate - it has a souring ingredient called butyric acid in it which causes the vomity/cheesy taste. US consumers are used to it, but our chocolate is made differently so we aren’t!

endofagain · 12/02/2022 19:42

I think they just don't know any different. It is sugar.

Ridingthegravytrain · 12/02/2022 19:42

I’m pretty sure I watched a programme that said it does have some derivative of vomit in it. I’m sure a google search will show more vomit 🤮

Whelmed · 12/02/2022 19:42

It's a vomity flavour, I don't know how they manage that. Maybe Americans think all chocolate tastes of vomit so in that case I guess Hershey is best of a bad bunch???

OfstedOffred · 12/02/2022 19:43

Don't get me wrong I'm not some kind of chocolate connoisseur. I tried tonys chocoloney and while it was nice I'd not be able to pick it out of a line up including green and blacks & lindt and stuff.

I just couldnt imagine choosing the hershey stuff if there was almost any European brand available!!

Hyacinths thank you for confirming. I guess we are all used to our local offerings.

Re the sour milk thing, why would they do that though? Is it a preservative? I thought the whole point of sweets and chocolate is the sugar content means it keeps long enough anyway

Hershey’s Almond Kisses are the best! Cannot wait to get back to the US and fill up my suitcase.

RedCandyApple · 12/02/2022 19:48

I like it but then I also like Cadbury’s and don’t think it tastes worse than before so 🤷‍♀️ Despite people saying it tastes horrible now I think it’s nice

RedCandyApple · 12/02/2022 19:48

I’m not American

Pishup · 12/02/2022 19:49

Yep! I tried it once, it was revolting! They didn't get finished at my work either!

Holothane · 12/02/2022 19:50

I love Reeves but Hershey is vile it really is.

OVienna · 12/02/2022 19:51

This is FASCINATING!

modgepodge · 12/02/2022 19:53

It does literally taste of vomit. Only time i tried it was at school, someone brought it back from a trip and everyone was raving about it. I honestly thought it was a joke shop product as all I could taste was sick!! I’d definitely go with no chocolate over Hersheys.

Georgeskitchen · 12/02/2022 19:53

Omg I thought it was just me who thought it tasted like vomit!!! I tried and it was disgusting. Caused that burning feeling in the back of my throat like when you just puked. Even my kids wouldn't eat it!!

GettingThemFromHereToThere · 12/02/2022 19:56

Yep. It's gross. I assume it's like anything though, try it enough and you soon get used to it. Like olives and red wine

OfstedOffred · 12/02/2022 19:57

Nightwaking that article is indeed fascinating.

Helenluvsrob · 12/02/2022 19:58

An American friend said it’s the taste of childhood and the warms fuzzies of home. That’s why they love it .
