To wonder if Americans actually like hersheys chocolate

Colleague returned from a trip to the states and brought various sweets back including Hershey chocolate.

I tried a bit and it tastes terrible. I mean really. I have a sweet tooth so can cope with how sugary it is but there's a weird sicky flavour I can't place.

Is this how Americans like chocolate? Or is it just that international brands maybe don't get imported there or are expensive?

It hasnt gone down well at work. Huge bag and after everyone tried it once no one went back for more Grin

I almost wish all chocolate did taste of vomit and then I wouldn't be such a greedy cow eat so much of it! Grin
I've not tried Hersheys but this isn't a great ad for it! I'm not massively keen on dairy milk either. It used to be loads nicer. It's somehow a bit waxy/greasy now rather than creamy.

BabyInTheJungle · 13/02/2022 08:27

Hershey's is gross and vomity. Ghirardellis is not bad in comparison.

In the UK, I don't really like Cadburys. The best chocolate I find is Aldi, Lidl or M&S branded. Amazing!

Oh SAME, can we arrange for white wine and crisps to taste a bit vomitty too?
gogohm · 13/02/2022 08:31

The hersheys cookies and cream is alright

MintJulia · 13/02/2022 08:34

It tastes revolting to me, but I guess someone must buy it, or it wouldn't exist.

We posted monthly parcels of 70% cocoa chocolate to dniece who lived in US with her dh. She said it was hard to get decent chocolate, decent cheese, or a wide enough range of fresh veggies.

Aishah231 · 13/02/2022 08:37

I agree Hershey's is disgusting. Haven't you noticed since Kraft took over brands like dairy milk the chocolate is getting more sugary. I had some mini eggs the other day. They tasted like cheap advent calendar chocolate.

Sausageandeggs · 13/02/2022 08:44

My American OH is picky about his chocolate and HATES American chocolate.

Normanpriceisnotarolemodel · 13/02/2022 08:58

I know someone who while in America took a bar of Hershey’s back to a shop saying it had gone off. They were told that was how it was supposed to taste.

OneTC · 13/02/2022 09:26

I love it

It's candy chocolate it's not meant to be high end

Also people who complain about Hershey's often love cadburys, so it's clearly not a judgement that comes from having good taste Grin

RainbowBridge21 · 13/02/2022 10:01

Ooh I noticed the vomity undertones when I tried Hershey's. So gross, I thought it was just me that thought it tasted like sick! What with Cadbury Milka galaxy nestle etc all existing I have no idea how our friends over the pond get chocolate so wrong!

Visited the Hershey store in Vegas on a trip from Australia, we were excited to try it because you always see it in movies etc.

We were shocked how disgusting it was, definitely a vomit taste, especially the plain chocolate.

My favourite here is Cadbury & Lindt.

I have a friend living in the UK who gets our Cadbury sent over because it tastes better to her. It must be a ‘what you grew up with’ thing!

polavary · 13/02/2022 12:05

@UserBot9to5

I'd love to go to Trader Joe's.

Sad i know we have health food shops but a health food supermarket sounds amazing.

We have a few whole foods in the Uk. Though I find them gimmicky and overpriced
Thatsplentyjack · 13/02/2022 12:16

My brother brought us some back from New York. 🤮 its the oy time I've ever thrown chocolate in the bin.

Spidey66 · 13/02/2022 12:29

I'm glad it's not just me who thinks it tastes of vomit!

I know it's not a popular opinion on MN but nothing beats Cadburys for chocolate IMO..

This is such a rude post. Each to his own. But really talking about Americans so dismissively.

No, but it tastes like vomit. Actual VOMIT. I think it is ok to ask what is going on.

Correct. It's just one of so many sneery Anti-American threads that MN loves to pile in on.
VelvetChairGirl · 13/02/2022 13:29

its not just us that think its disgusting I was watching Abroad in Japan on youtube and he got his japanese friend to try a international chocolate taste test and they thought the american stuff was awful too and said it smells like a zoo.

which was an interesting observation because that acid they put in american chocolate is most commonly used as a preservative in animal feeds.

anyway you have to keep your eyes peeled not all Hersheys are made in America, my son loves their cookies and cream bar but most of the bars sold in the UK are made in Malaysia and are completely different to the American stuff, we have made the mistake a few times of buying a bar without reading the back of the pack first and he has had a nasty surprise, neither of us can stand the American stuff it always goes straight in the bin.

VelvetChairGirl · 13/02/2022 13:34

@brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

bit like Brits loving Cadbury‘s, it’s grim and barely passes for chocolate but weirdly a lot of them like the stuff 🤷🏻‍♂️
its the bog standard cheap chocolate, no frills you know what your getting, its hardly something we make a beeline for, for example at valentines if someone got you cadburys and not a nice box of lindt or thorntons you'd not be too impressed its a cheapskate mundane thing to buy.
mUserBot9to5 · 13/02/2022 14:07

You can't beat a twirl.

I like lindt for example but find it too soft and buttery. Just give me a twirl.

It's not rude about American people!

We all understand that it's a chemical put in the chocolate to stop it melting. How is that rude about Americans.

LilyGlobe · 13/02/2022 14:17

Hershey’s kisses are my absolute favourite but I think it’s because I remember my grandad coming back from America with bags of them which we used to share. My grandad was the best grandad you could ever hope for and I treasure those memories. Kisses will always have a place in my heart because of that.

avocadotofu · 13/02/2022 14:20

I'm American and I love it perhaps because it reminds me of childhood! I never eat it anymore because I'm vegan now. And I totally understand why others don't it's very sweet.

PotatoGoblins · 13/02/2022 14:21

I’m glad others have said abojt the vomit taste!
I always thought that maybe the Hershey’s chocolate I tried was on the turn - just one dodgy bar. But now everyone has said it, I guess it just tastes like that all the time Confused
