To wonder if Americans actually like hersheys chocolate

Colleague returned from a trip to the states and brought various sweets back including Hershey chocolate.

I tried a bit and it tastes terrible. I mean really. I have a sweet tooth so can cope with how sugary it is but there's a weird sicky flavour I can't place.

Is this how Americans like chocolate? Or is it just that international brands maybe don't get imported there or are expensive?

It hasnt gone down well at work. Huge bag and after everyone tried it once no one went back for more Grin

I’m British and I like Hershey’s

JudgeJ · 12/02/2022 21:26

@Bagelsandbrie

My whole family is American and they used to beg me to bring Cadburys over (before it changed) as they all think Uk chocolate is so much nicer….! I can’t stand Hersheys.
They clearly don't understand chocolate! I recall going round the Hershey factory in Pennsylvania, the place stank but the children insisted on going and they even took the goodies at the end. People rave about Ghiradelli chocolate in the States, it's certainly more expensive than Hershey but it's still not great.

@Georgie8

Omg Hershey’s -gross 🤮 We were so disappointed. Mind you there’s an Italian chocolatier in San Fransisco (Ghirardelli) which is sooo good -so I assume not all Americans think Hershey’s is edible!
But even that isn't comparable to even the mid-range European chocolate, it has a far lower cocoa content, someone must like it though because there are queues to get into the shop!
NotNowBoris · 12/02/2022 21:39

We loved the food when we went to America and enjoyed pretty much everything from burgers, breakfasts, fresh seafood, snacks, even sweets full of artificial flavouring. The vast quantity of Hershey chocolate that purchased on day 1 of our road trip all got dumped in the airport bin as we departed.

OverCCCs · 12/02/2022 21:40

I think it’s largely due to Hershey’s just being what most Americans are familiar with. Off the top of my head, I can’t think of any other brand in the US where you can buy giant bags of plain milk chocolate (no nuts, etc) for cheap.

Dita73 · 12/02/2022 21:44

Hershey is not chocolate. It’s some vile brown substance puked up by some demon from hell. It’s revolting!

UserBot9to5 · 12/02/2022 21:48

There's a vomity aftertaste to it for sure. Not sure how they don't taste it.

Munchyseeds · 12/02/2022 21:52

Tried it once and we were all so disappointed!
Really did taste of sick

UserBot9to5 · 12/02/2022 21:53

It's not in Reese's though. that Butyric acid stuff. I love the peanut butter cups.

1309usernameu · 12/02/2022 21:53

I lived in NY and once there was like a potluck thing, this girl brought hersheys covered pretzels.

I remember eating one and suddenly having the vomit taste at the back of my mouth, but I really liked her and had to swallow it and pretend I liked it.

Great acting on my part…

Bedsheets4knickers · 12/02/2022 21:56

Yep bought a bar when we went to NY , it does taste of vomit .

UserBot9to5 · 12/02/2022 21:58

@GeorgiaGirl52

There are three basics - Hersheys, Nestles, and Reeses chocolates that are available everywhere. There there is the "step above" - Ghiradelli, Toblerone, etc. better but pricey. Imported chocolate is expensive. I like Fry's orange cream bars but I have to pay order them online and pay $2.50 /bar. The same with the UK Cadbury's like Whispa and Flake. Only available through post.
I thought Toblerone was Swiss!
OhWhyNot · 12/02/2022 21:59

Many do and seem happy with plastic tasting cheese. Ready made meals are far better quality here too

I guess it is what you are used to

Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods have a better choice but costly

UserBot9to5 · 12/02/2022 21:59

Ah, it is now owned by Kraft an American company I think but ''most production remains in Switzerland''.

itwasntaparty · 12/02/2022 22:00

It's not chocolate. It's a candy bar and tastes like vomit 🤢

UserBot9to5 · 12/02/2022 22:01

I'd love to go to Trader Joe's.

Sad i know we have health food shops but a health food supermarket sounds amazing.

dreamingbohemian · 12/02/2022 22:03

Not all American chocolate tastes like that. Nestle and Reese's and Mars are fine, they taste like cheap British chocolate.

I didn't mind Hershey's when I lived in the US but now I think it's revolting.

I used to live next to a Lindt shop, that was pretty amazing!

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 12/02/2022 22:09

bit like Brits loving Cadbury‘s, it’s grim and barely passes for chocolate but weirdly a lot of them like the stuff 🤷🏻‍♂️

OhWhyNot · 12/02/2022 22:11

You will find better quality of food in Sainsbury’s/Lidl/Tesco’s than Trader Joe’s

Its difficult to buy cereals/bread low in sugar or plain crackers etc

Haus1234 · 12/02/2022 22:13

I think TJs is a bit “fake healthy” tbh - they certainly sell a tonne of sugary stuff!
ShakespearesSisters · 12/02/2022 22:14

Yup, tastes like chocolate that has been eaten and made a reappearance 🤮

GrumpyPanda · 12/02/2022 22:26

@ThirdElephant

Is it actually classed as chocolate? I thought it was candy.
Odd comment coming from a country that forced the EU to change the legal definition of chocolate
HW1989 · 12/02/2022 22:34

I lived in the US for two years and would always get my parents to send Cadbury’s over. Hershey’s is vile!

GrumpyPanda · 12/02/2022 22:35

Hit post too soon...

change the definition of chocolate in order to accommodate a lower cocoa content. To be precise, this was at the instigation of both the UK and Sweden. Tbh I don't see much difference to the American version.... now if we were talking Belgian chocolate Smile

Oh I loved Whole Foods, we used to buy their soups as an evening meal when we were doing road trips, loved them.
