To wonder if Americans actually like hersheys chocolate

OfstedOffred · 12/02/2022 19:37

Colleague returned from a trip to the states and brought various sweets back including Hershey chocolate.

I tried a bit and it tastes terrible. I mean really. I have a sweet tooth so can cope with how sugary it is but there's a weird sicky flavour I can't place.

Is this how Americans like chocolate? Or is it just that international brands maybe don't get imported there or are expensive?

It hasnt gone down well at work. Huge bag and after everyone tried it once no one went back for more Grin

I grew up in the States and I recall you were either a Hersey's or Nestle fan. I don't like Herseys at all. I expect it's what you were brought up with.

Canaloha · 14/02/2022 04:49

Hersheys is rank, so is a lot of American food though to be fair.

loislovesstewie · 14/02/2022 05:15

Someone 'treated' me to some Hershey's chocolate years ago; never again. It does taste like vomit. As far as I am concerned nothing beats a good Belgian choc, although I am quite partial to a Yorkie as well.

endofagain · 14/02/2022 05:31

@mathanxiety

Have any of you tried s'mores with real graham crackers, Hershey's, and toasted marshmallows?

I think they would change your mind about Hershey's.

I had one recently. Everybody raved about them but tbh I wouldn't have another. I think it is a question of what tastes you establish early on. That said, I was brought up in a village in a pretty dull part of England where the most exciting treat was fish and chips. I never tried food from other countries/ cultures until I was in my 20s. I eat just about everything now. Not fried crickets or fresh durian though.
WanderingFruitWonderer · 14/02/2022 05:43

I'm a vegan, so couldn't try it, but it sounds yucky. Funnily enough, now I'm vegan, and used to dairy-free chocolate, all milk chocolate tastes unpleasant to me. I ate a bit (quality brand too) by accident recently (long story) and it tasted so weird, like the smell of a farm or something, to me! Whereas I used to love milk chocolate in my pre-vegan days. So, I guess our taste buds must really change, and we get used to things. Marmite is another example of this - I love the stuff, having been brought up on it; but my French brother-in-law is horrified by it! He thinks we're mad! 😂

Furbulousnous · 14/02/2022 06:35

They love it! But all their choc tastes a bit like that TBH so they’re used to it, as would we be if we’d had it since childhood

Oh,god Smores! Mu US family love them- the first time I tried them I thought they were a disgusting mess about to give me diabetes! My opinion hasn’t changed. Even our kids think they’re too sweet.
No thanks!

queenofarles · 14/02/2022 10:16

But that’s just masking the taste of Hershey’s.

Have you tried all American food or just the American food in the U.K.?

mycatisannoying · 14/02/2022 10:28

Disgusting stuff. YANBU.

I studied in America for a year, I actually prefer the versions of American food we have here. I'm sure many home cooked meals are delicious, the food when eating out was horrible imo and ceetain groceries super expensive whilst the stuff filled with goodness knows what was of course quite cheap. I used to be overweight and had BED so I'm not adverse to unhealthy food but just didn't find it very nice, as I'm sure they wouldn't find a lot of our food particularly great.
OhWhyNot · 14/02/2022 10:30

Yes have had s’mores

My nephew and nieces were so excited for ds to try them he liked it I didn’t. But he likes Oreos too

endofagain · 14/02/2022 10:46

Oh I hate Oreos. It is like eating mint flavoured earth. I didn't like them when I lived in the states and couldn't understand why they are so popular.

queenofarles · 14/02/2022 11:07

There are loads of videos on YT about Americans preferring McDonalds in Oz and Europe, the reason was, the non American McDonald’s had fewer additives.

phoenixrosehere · 14/02/2022 11:20

@queenofarles

I preferred the McDs in France. The ones here in the U.K. are good but I wish they had a grilled chicken snack wrap like they do in the States. I miss those.

queenofarles · 14/02/2022 11:32

Oh the ones in the UK are horrible too,
The best I’ve had in France I agree, and Switzerland too!

phoenixrosehere · 14/02/2022 11:43

I fell in love with their pasta salad in France. It was simple but delicious. No pasta salad I’ve ever had here compared.

@PrincessNutella

I feel as if there is a disappointing lack of curiosity and openmindedness on this thread. I am not saying anyone should like Hershey's chocolate. I don't love it myself. But tasting the foods of another culture can be a visceral way of experiencing something about another culture, and there is often a fascinating history behind them that can open a door into another world, whether it is the foods of the wealthy or the junk food of the poor or everything in between. I see 138 messages so far, the great majority pretty much sneering at the tastes of another country, and very few asking "What's the why?" which is the only really interesting question. WHY is it that a certain people eats the foods they do? How did they acquire a taste for such a thing? Is there any food that we eat that we might have an equivalent taste for? And might other peoples view us in the same way? And are there any other countries that have similarly odd food products? Etc. These are interesting ways to talk about a foreign food and how you feel about it. Not just "Foreigners are stupid."
And all of those explaining the why, linking to science behind the why, discussing other countries and their 'home' tastes?

Hardly a lack of curiosity or open mindendess when so many posters who are not American have bought and/or tasted Hersheys!

Those equally denigrating the UKs best selling chocolate - and indeed quite a few other products across the world?

Those saying that Hersheys from across the world are a bit different, just as Cadbury's are?

And you are the only poster to say "Foreigners are stupid."

Or are we reading a different thread?

queenofarles · 14/02/2022 12:41

The French are very tough to please, if people think British are snobbish towards American food , the French are worse , it’s obvious McDonalds understood all these challenges and took them very seriously , Mc Cafes in Paris are actually far better than any Starbucks in the US.

GoingtoGlasgow · 14/02/2022 12:56

I like the Hershey's Cookies and Cream bar, but that is like white chocolate with biscuit pieces in. I don't like any of the normal Hershey bars or Hershey's Kisses.

mathanxiety · 14/02/2022 15:46

Original flavour Oreos are the extremely popular ones. I can't imagine what the minty ones taste like.

mathanxiety · 14/02/2022 15:49

No, grahams and marshmallows compliment the Hersheys. They don't mask it - the roasted marshmallow in particular goes well.

mathanxiety · 14/02/2022 15:50

I think it is a question of what tastes you establish early on.

I first tasted s'mores when I was in my mid-20s.

shockedNeighbour · 14/02/2022 16:28

I bought some from a food import shop as I always fancied it after seeing, “Empire of the Sun”.

It was disgusting. It smells (and tastes) of vomit. That nasty smell that your breath has right after vomiting if you want me to be specific.

It went right in the bin!

I'm so glad it's not just me. My kids love Hersheys. I think it tastes of vomit. It's utterly foul.
