To wonder if Americans actually like hersheys chocolate

Colleague returned from a trip to the states and brought various sweets back including Hershey chocolate.

I tried a bit and it tastes terrible. I mean really. I have a sweet tooth so can cope with how sugary it is but there's a weird sicky flavour I can't place.

Is this how Americans like chocolate? Or is it just that international brands maybe don't get imported there or are expensive?

It hasnt gone down well at work. Huge bag and after everyone tried it once no one went back for more Grin

@AdoptedBumpkin

I've never eaten Hershey chocolate because I've heard various people over the years say it's crap. I suppose someone must like it.
It seemed like Galaxy, horribly slimey.
Chishnfips · 12/02/2022 22:37

Imagine how bad the Mocolate stuff Monica tries is if the Hersheys is that bad.

OhWhyNot · 12/02/2022 22:40

I always take flakes/whole nut, marmalade and tea when I go and see family

PainterMummy · 12/02/2022 22:41

I do fancy the Hershey’s almond kisses.

georgarina · 12/02/2022 22:42

American, and it's disgusting. All American chocolate is inedible IMO, although I have friends who like it.

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 12/02/2022 23:31

It is GRIM. I honestly thought that people saying it tasted like vomit were being ridiculous. They were not.

Mind you, I grew up in a city that had a Rowntree factory in the centre. On a good day, the whole city smelt like chocolate for MILES. It was amazing. We must have had the highest chocolate consumption per capita for decades as a result.

TheHateIsNotGood · 12/02/2022 23:49

I understand it all - but what I do not understand is why I can't find Fritos Corn Chips in the UK, not even a knock off.

Anyone know why?

Flowersandhearts · 12/02/2022 23:54

I agree OP.

RE. The Chemistry World Article: Haha, great to finally know why (butyric acid) Hersheys tastes so much like vomit! The texture also just makes it even more vomit inducing.

Chestofdraws · 13/02/2022 00:00

I agree also, I thought it was going to be fab and was really surprised, it just had a really bad taste for me. I couldn’t quite understand why anyone would like it.

Perfectlystill · 13/02/2022 00:00

@Georgie8

Omg Hershey’s -gross 🤮 We were so disappointed. Mind you there’s an Italian chocolatier in San Fransisco (Ghirardelli) which is sooo good -so I assume not all Americans think Hershey’s is edible!
Ugh I think Ghirardellis is gross too!
MissConductUS · 13/02/2022 00:06

Milk duds are still widely available in the US.

As someone noted up thread, there are much better chocolate brands in the US, like Ghirardelli, which is available everywhere, not just in San Francisco.

Volhhg · 13/02/2022 00:07

Yeah I'm American and I like it. I don't really think of it like other chocolate that I also like. I think if it's the first chocolate that you're given as a child you will probably always like it, probably something to do with sugar and memory

MissConductUS · 13/02/2022 00:18

@Volhhg, where in the US are you from? NY'er here.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 13/02/2022 00:24

DH is American and doesn't like it. His preferred brand is Ghiradelli which is MUCH better. Still not as good as proper Cadbury's though.

Sahgah · 13/02/2022 00:26

Chocolate taste different in different countries and if your grow up eating it then that's what you would prefer.

When I first moved to the uk and first had a cadburys chocolate bar I though it must be off and threw it out. We have cadburys in my home country and expected it to be the same but it was different and I didn't like it.

KimikosNightmare · 13/02/2022 00:26

@polavary

It’s so gross!! It tastes of vomit. I don’t understand at all Confused
I'm sure loads of people will second this- but it really does taste of vomit.
TheVanguardSix · 13/02/2022 00:29

As a kid, I loved Hershey’s Mr. Goodbar & Special. My aunt would send us Cadbury’s fruit and nut which was complete and utter heaven.
Hershey’s kisses are awful… that vomity taste. 🤢

mjf981 · 13/02/2022 00:34

It must be an acquired taste from childhood - if you grow up with it, you love it. Like vegemite to the Australians.
But I agree, I think its absolutely disgusting.

KimikosNightmare · 13/02/2022 00:36

From that very interesting article

And now, I challenge you not to think of a dog’s bottom the next time you reach for a delicious, tangy, Hershey’s Kiss

mathanxiety · 13/02/2022 01:23

@OfstedOffred, the weird sick flavour in Hershey's is the same ingredient that makes parmesan cheese smell a bit like puke.

mathanxiety · 13/02/2022 01:24

X post with a lot of people..

buddylicious · 13/02/2022 02:39

Oddly enough my teenage daughter was yesterday saying that American chocolate takes like sick!

Lemonyfuckit · 13/02/2022 08:10

With you OP, tried some one and yes it tasted of vomit, it's absolutely vile and I don't understand how Americans like it.

Titfortatfortit · 13/02/2022 08:13

Dat shit’s nasty.

hattie43 · 13/02/2022 08:20

I'm a complete chocoholic but I found Hershey's so vile I couldn't eat it . Would rather have no chocolate than that .
