@Peregrina

The next election is two years and three months away, at the maximum. Whether Johnson decides to scrap the Fixed Term Parliament Act and call an earlier election - well, who knows?
If things go as catastrophically wrong in May as I suspect they might it won’t be Johnson’s decision.

It's funny how you quote those polls when the Conservatives are doing well but dismiss them when they are doing poorly.

I frequently quote the percentage of 'don't knows/undecided' - more so than most posters.

Peregrina · 12/02/2022 15:16

I don't think anyone is backing Lavrov - he seems a pretty unpleasant character. We are just saying that since he's been around a long time, the Foreign Secretary should have made sure she was up to speed on exactly what he was like. Keep the cheap slogans and cheese for the British public.

Maybe your posts have been misinterpreted in the past.

Also known as 'Johnsoned'

jgw1 · 12/02/2022 15:22

@Clavinova

jgw1 Are you saying that because Lavrov is like that there was no need for Truss to take her trip to see him seriously?

I can't believe some of you are backing Lavrov's interpretation of the meeting. He doesn't have much respect for the EU;

MOSCOW, Feb 10 (Reuters) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Thursday said a collective response from the European Union to Russian security proposals would lead to a breakdown in talks...

@Clavinova I am really not sure I am understanding what you are trying to say.

There is clear video of Truss talking over the translator in a meeting with Lavrov.

She looks daft in the video.

Anyway you keep bringing up Russia and Ukraine on a thread about enjoying falls. Could you perhaps explain what fall you are enjoying? That of Ukraine? British prestige or something else?

I remember watching the fall of the Berlin Wall on the tv, now that was something special.

Luckily Corbyn wasn't Prime Minister then otherwise he would have insisted we all walked to Moscow to pay homage.

How do you know she wasn't up to speed? According to whom? Lavrov's officials? Remainer civil servants? Biased media reports? Even that clip of Lavrov walking off was edited by some media sources - he did actually stop and open the door for Liz Truss. His walking off was obviously political grandstanding - which our media lapped up.

Clavinova · 12/02/2022 15:37

There is clear video of Truss talking over the translator in a meeting with Lavrov.

The situation interpreted by a group called "UK is with EU"/Rejoin EU on Twitter - hardly an unbiased source. Is it reported elsewhere?

borntobequiet · 12/02/2022 15:39

Love the scattergun whataboutery.
No one thinks Lavrov is a pleasant person or anything other than a heavy-handed (but very capable) Putin henchman, intent on disadvantaging the West at every opportunity. And no one thinks Liz Truss has any credibility at all as Foreign Secretary.

borntobequiet · 12/02/2022 15:40

No one sensible, I hastily add, before some Tory nonentity is dragged up to say she’s the bee’s knees.

Ok, so what is your interpretation of what the video shows?

@clarinova if you’re going to reject all sources of information there’s no discussion to be had with you is there? Can you link anything reporting how her performance was actually professional and considered to counter the reports that she gave a seasoned diplomat easy ammo?

Otherwise your stance is basically ‘nu uh’.

There were complaints on the locked predecessor to this thread that there was no attempt by some posters to engage in discussion. I guess this is what they mean.

'Anyway you keep bringing up Russia and Ukraine on a thread about enjoying falls'

Not aimed at me but I like sticking my beak in to correct you. Russia was first brought up last night by other posters. Good to finally discuss the worrying situation rather than cake, better late than never.

Should we not debate unless it is about 'falls'? So for example to the sneery Truss crap an appropriate response would be 'I like blah blah waterfall'. That how it goes?

Difficult to say - I don't speak Russian.

This thread is about our enjoyment of falls. So you are most welcome to discuss for instance Lavrov falling over, or beautiful waterfalls in Russia. I am not entirely sure the relevance to falls all the posts about the Foreign Secretary's performance in Moscow, unless you think it was a fall?

Without speaking Russian, can you see that Truss is speaking over the translation of what Lavrov says?

In fact if Truss like you doesn't speak Russian, would it make sense for that translation to finish?

@jgw1 I can believe it - I dip in and out of these threads and it’s actually pretty impressive the devotion some can give to digging their heels in and just sticking to one argument over and over and over again. Like saying it enough makes it true.

I know! The op is persistent I'll give them that. It's sooo reminiscent of the one sided and often silly brexit threads.

The ooohing and aahing over what a tit like Lavrov had to say whilst tutting at Truss is a depressing example of people grasping at straws, any excuse to stick the boot in, because cake.

Cornettoninja · 12/02/2022 15:57

Well yes if I was drinking at work I would be quickly out of the job, but clearly different rules apply for the Prime Minister.

Setting aside the fact that we apparently need to understand Russian to know whether Truss was talking over an interpreter and the suggestion that maybe that footage has been rigged by a pro-EU group...

Truss walked into a deliberate (and, yes, childish - ooh, look, both sides were behaving poorly, can I cope with that complex notion?) trap set by Lavrov, who fooled her into stating repeatedly that she thought Russia had no sovereignty over Voronezh and Rostov.

Sovereignty is surely meant to be one of this government's specialist subjects - although perhaps not Truss's, if she's a pesky Remainer just pretending to agree with Brexit to climb the greasy pole, after all...

But if she didn't know where Voronezh and Rostov are, she should not have doubled down on that. There are ways of sidestepping those questions without looking like an incompetent moron.

Meanwhile, thanks to clav for the belly laugh at "Macron and Putin are friends". There are some comedy gems on here.
