@JaniieJones

'I dip in and out of these threads and it’s actually pretty impressive the devotion some can give to digging their heels in and just sticking to one argument over and over and over again. Like saying it enough makes it true.'

I know! The op is persistent I'll give them that. It's sooo reminiscent of the one sided and often silly brexit threads.

The ooohing and aahing over what a tit like Lavrov had to say whilst tutting at Truss is a depressing example of people grasping at straws, any excuse to stick the boot in, because cake.

@JaniieJones Its sad isn't it that despite some posters repeated attempts there is no real discussion going on. For example I would love to hear why posters think it acceptable for the 56 year old Prime Minister to have a birthday party while denying parties to millions of children.

But instead we have endless but look what Lavrov said about the EU as if it has any relevance.

There are ways of sidestepping those questions without looking like an incompetent moron

There’s a specialist field for that… ummmm pawasticks? Loliticks?

It’ll come to me.

Peregrina · 12/02/2022 16:07

I believe she got her Baltics and Black Seas mixed up. That is not good for a foreign secretary.

But it's not surprising, Raab barely knows where France is, yet you can see it on a clear day from the Kentish coast.

You think it's just 'cake'

I don't think cake was served at all the gatherings Johnson or the Civil Servants attended.

AuldAlliance · 12/02/2022 16:09

She did get the Baltic and Black Seas confused.

Easily done with names of foreign parts, though, especially when they start with the same letter...I mean, who's expected to know stuff like that??

Peregrina · 12/02/2022 16:13

You have to have booze at a party to turn it into a work meeting, and since children don't have booze, by definition their gatherings can never become work.

Its very easily done. I once thought I was in America, turns out it was Armenia.

Then of course, some people think that there is a country called Africa.

Well Angie got Sadiq and Sajiid mixed up a few times. The names of actual people, so I suppose mixing seas up isn't that outrageous.

Thank you for the clarification and your insight. I now understand the difference.

"If you're a conservative."
Which is entirely the point, obviously.
Not the fact that the Foreign Minister doesn't know where the Baltic is.

Without speaking Russian, can you see that Truss is speaking over the translation of what Lavrov says?

Perhaps the translator paused and then started up again - who knows? Strange there's only one clip posted by a rejoin EU group.

Cornettoninja
Can you link anything reporting how her performance was actually professional and considered

Tory MP Tom Tugendhat, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, praised Ms Truss for standing up to her Russian counterpart tweeting: “While we’re trying to bring peace and stability, Russia is playing games. Good to see ⁦*@trussliz*⁩ standing up to Lavrov.”

So you take Lavrov's side on this? Why?

Speaking at a joint press conference, Mr Lavrov claimed the UK continued to be dismissive of Russia’s security concerns.

“I’m rather disappointed that it was a bit like talking to a deaf person,” he said. “It’s like they’re listening to us but not hearing.”

Mr Lavrov claimed that UK-Russia relations had plunged to their lowest point “in many years”, saying Ms Truss was “following the West’s playbook”. He denied suggestions that Russia would invade Ukraine.

But Ms Truss responded: “I can’t see any other reason for 100,000 troops stationed on the Ukrainian border apart from threatening Ukraine, and if Russia is serious about diplomacy, they need to move those troops and desist from the threats.

"Fundamentally a war in Ukraine will be disastrous for the Russian and Ukrainian people for European security."

cakeorwine · 12/02/2022 16:39

Exactly! I wasn't stooping just giving some balance, names get mixed up. Baltic/black sea. Meh

I think that's important when you are a Foreign Minister holding talks with Russia when there is the potential of invasion.

Notonthestairs · 12/02/2022 16:41

This is totally off topic but I can't stop thinking about this tweet from FCO official.

twitter.com/melsimmonsfcdo/status/1492402291734888449?s=21

Public service and extraordinarily brave.

Clavinova · 12/02/2022 16:44

Truss walked into a deliberate (and, yes, childish - ooh, look, both sides were behaving poorly, can I cope with that complex notion?) trap set by Lavrov, who fooled her into stating repeatedly that she thought Russia had no sovereignty over Voronezh and Rostov.

"allegedly" and "partly confirmed" - it was a closed door meeting.
The Guardian says "repeatedly" in their report but the Moscow Times says; "Truss was quickly corrected by the British Ambassador in the meeting." Why would the British Ambassador and other officials not correct her quickly?

Notonthestairs · 12/02/2022 16:47

"We would be in a much better place today, and our tough talk would be much more effective, if the government had taken more robust action on money laundering and dodgy Russian money. Some ministers know this, and have been saying so privately for years."

Thread from Chris Bryant about the recent history between Russia and UK governments and a failure to take action against money laundering has negatively impacted on our influence.

But if the government dealt with the money laundering, they might not receive such big donations?

@Peregrina

The next election is two years and three months away, at the maximum. Whether Johnson decides to scrap the Fixed Term Parliament Act and call an earlier election - well, who knows?
Johnson cannot scrap the Fixed Term Parliament Act - it can only be scrapped by parliament.
Notonthestairs · 12/02/2022 16:56

Well that's the point of a majority - you pass the legislation you want. Unless the Lords "interfere" I suppose or your Whips can't keep MP's in line.

I understand that the legislation presented to parliament is not the responsibility of this Prime Minister, but rather is devised by the Leader of the House in cooperation with the opposition.

A Foreign Secretary who lacks smarts in the geography department is a "meh" matter? You do you, but I expect better.
