Should the monarchy end with this queen?

YABU Charles will be the next king, we can’t pick and choose and the system should go on

YANBU the monarchy should end and we get to vote on a president in future

OP posts:

Can I have a ‘skip Charles as king’ option ?

Mamamia7962 · 06/02/2022 08:33

No it shouldn't. Charles and William will slim it down, but the Royal Family will be here for years to come.

That would be my choice.

The monarchy will go on but as it has always done it will adapt and change (I was going to say with the times but that doesn’t really apply!)

MissHoney85 · 06/02/2022 08:33

I really like the Queen but I think a large part of why I and many others like her is because she is a woman. She's got the whole "nation's granny" thing going on and the fact that she's a woman makes her position of privilege and (pseudo) power a lot more palatable. When I think of a man being in her position the ridiculousness of the whole thing becomes a lot more evident.

ANameChangeAgain · 06/02/2022 08:35

YABU. I worked for a charity once with a royal patron, and the local pr buzz when they visited did a lot good in raising awareness of our work. The monarchy isn't just about flashy property in London, they are basically our pr team.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 06/02/2022 08:38

I love the royal family- of course there are bad eggs, some that should be in prison but I love the fact we have a royal family

StarlingsAreAmazing · 06/02/2022 08:41

Vote of no confidence from me.

GalesThisMorning · 06/02/2022 08:41

I asked this on another thread - how does it end? Do we vote them out? Who calls the vote?

AllOfUsAreDead · 06/02/2022 08:42

Even if you want them gone, it's highly unlikely they will ever go. They bring a lot of income to Britain via tourism, and they do a lot of work with different charities.

Yes as someone else said, some of them are shit, some should be in jail (that won't happen either just to forewarn you), but most families have dodgy people in them. This is a very powerful family, in some ways. They won't be going.

Darbs76 · 06/02/2022 08:44

No I don’t think the monarchy should end. Charles has every right to be King and I’m sure he will be a good King. Obviously people want William to be King but his time will come. Charles has waited a lifetime for his opportunity so of course it’s not fair to skip him. That’s not how it works unless he decides that, which is highly unlikely

Mountainpika · 06/02/2022 08:44

Would we want to run the risk of having a president like Trump?

TheKeatingFive · 06/02/2022 08:44

I hope people realise this makes them non monarchists 😉

Mumoblue · 06/02/2022 08:45

Yes. They should go. We can keep the palaces and tourists will still come. I find it absurd that we have a monarchy in this day and age.
Not to mention, are they going to re-mint all the currency to update to Charles? And then again when HE dies? Waste of money.

TopCatsTopHat · 06/02/2022 08:45

I look around the world at countries with presidents and the system doesn't look like an improvement to me. People being born into privelage or seeking it out for their own ambition... No benefit to ditch one and instate another.
As it is, the Royal family have an authenticity to the deference their position as ambassador for uk is given which as a pp said is good pr for our country, that comes from the history that precedes. Some bloke in a presidential post trying to command the same respect in what is essentially a ceremonial role would just be a farce.

TheKeatingFive · 06/02/2022 08:45

This argument is so stupid. You came quite close to getting Andrew and unlike Trump you wouldn't have been able to get rid of him.

Sounds like you haven't looked very far. Perhaps check out your near neighbours, Ireland

GreenWhiteViolet · 06/02/2022 08:48

YANBU. It's outdated and ridiculous. I have some respect for the Queen and her sense of duty, but after she goes, that should be the end of it. All the history and palaces will still be there for the tourists and anyone else who is interested. The monarchy should be a part of our past, not our future.

The 'skip Charles' people are bizarre. That's not how a hereditary monarchy works. You get whoever is next in line, whether you like them or not.

I'm sure if we had a President there would sometimes be someone elected that I don't like or approve of. The difference? It's temporary, and it's democratic. President William? Sure. A million times better than King William. We can vote him out next time if he's terrible.

DorothyZbornakIsAQueen · 06/02/2022 08:50

The mo archive is such an antiquated concept. Inherited privilege is just wrong.

King's, Queens, Dukes, duchess, Lords, ladies, it all sounds so silly.

It wouldn't be half as bad if they were actually a noble family grateful for their inherited wealth.

What the fuck is a 70 odd year old king going to do for this country? Its embarrassing.

Let's face it, what do they actually do? People would still come and visit the landmarks, but with more access, like the Palace of versaille.

Down with the monarchy!!

DorothyZbornakIsAQueen · 06/02/2022 08:51

*monarchy not mo archive ffs

Furbulousnous · 06/02/2022 08:51

‘ love the royal family- of course there are bad eggs, some’

Bad eggs? Is that what we’re calling the rapist Prince Andrew now?

Agree. You said it much better than I did!!
WinnieTheW0rm · 06/02/2022 08:52

About a third of countries have a monarchy, and that includes the Scandinavian nations where inequality is very low.

I think the slimmed down monarchy could prove a very good arrangement for head of state.

This argument is so stupid. You came quite close to getting Andrew and unlike Trump you wouldn't have been able to get rid of him

He he started moving down the succession when William was born in the early 80s, and that pre-dates his sleaze. If he had been heir, his life wouid have been completely different, so I don't think this is a particularly useful comparison. As Harry found out, the spare has no role, and can quit without being much missed and then can take their life wherever they want. Andrew didn't quit, but clearly moved off the dull/worthy/dutiful path we currently expect of the Windsors

Furbulousnous · 06/02/2022 08:54

They need to be more like the Scandinavians where we don’t spend millions on them, their cousins and hangers on.
And as for the - tourism defence.
The Crown Jewels, the palaces, the pomp and ceremony, the changing of the guard, the carriages, soldiers and everything else belong to the U.K. not to a bunch of overbred toffs.
They will
Still all exist for the tourist to visit king after we’ve down graded the royal family.

SarahBellam · 06/02/2022 08:54

Well, they’re basically just celebrities now, aren’t they? You may as well have Hugh Grant and Olivia Cole as the monarchs. Most countries are happy enough without having all the forelock tugging and stupid titles so I don’t see why it would be any different for the UK, and it might help break down some of these daft class barriers if we were all able to see ourselves as a bit more equal, instead of all this bowing and scraping to people because they were born into a particular family. That’s just really really daft.
