ivykaty44 · 06/02/2022 08:30

YABU Charles will be the next king, we can’t pick and choose and the system should go on

YANBU the monarchy should end and we get to vote on a president in future

GeneLovesJezebel
Can I have a ‘skip Charles as king’ option ?
That would be my choice.

The monarchy will go on but as it has always done it will adapt and change (I was going to say with the times but that doesn’t really apply!)

It’s a monarchy, there is no choice. I’m a Republican but of course Charles will and should become king.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 06/02/2022 08:56

@Furbulousnous

‘ love the royal family- of course there are bad eggs, some’

Bad eggs? Is that what we’re calling the rapist Prince Andrew now?

So one awful human being in a family should remove all of them? Are you responsible for your families actions?
fenulla · 06/02/2022 08:56

So difficult
I respect the queen and think the monarchy is likely to be a less troublesome entity than a president

Babdoc · 06/02/2022 08:58

Mumoblue, we don’t “remint all the currency” for a new monarch! The old coins remain perfectly legal tender, we simply mint all future ones with the new king’s head on. It costs no extra per coin produced.

AuxArmesCitoyens · 06/02/2022 09:01

If Charles and Di were unable to conceive for any reason, we would be looking at King Andrew in about five to ten years.

ufucoffee · 06/02/2022 09:01

No it shouldn't

alicesfavouritepen · 06/02/2022 09:02

No. It needs to end.

NativityDreaming · 06/02/2022 09:03

A monarchy is a ludicrous thing, there is no good reason to continue this farce.

FlowerArranger · 06/02/2022 09:03

I'd rather have a monarch than an ambitious has-been politician who wants to feather his nest and those of his cronies. In comparison, the queen seems both neutral and good value, as well as providing stability.

We know who will be our country's figurehead for decades to come: Charles, William, George. I can't see any of them doing anything anything outrageous or sleezy.

It's a good thing though that the 'firm' is being slimmed down to essential players only. This means the direct line plus a few selected good eggs who are willing to put in the work - i.e. Princess Anne and the Wessexes. I also like the fact that the Queen and Charles have been quite determined to sideline Andrew and the Suxxeses.

Fangdango · 06/02/2022 09:03

When people say we can't have a president because we'd end up voting for Blair / Trump etc I always wonder if they have the same objection to an elected House of Commons. I mean look at the state of Boris. Let's just stick with the House of Lords?

OnceUponAWhine · 06/02/2022 09:04

To ask this question is to not fully understand the role of the modern monarchy or the income their very existence (and legacy) generates.

ClariceQuiff · 06/02/2022 09:04

Yes - there were still George VI shillings and two-shillings doing duty as 5ps and 10ps in my childhood (70s/80s) - if they hadn't reduced the size of the silver coins in the 90s, we might still be using them now!
felulageller · 06/02/2022 09:05

It should end right now.

MeanderingGently · 06/02/2022 09:06

To answer your question, no, I think the royal family should go on. And I will be delighted when Charles is king, I think he will be very good. He is not afraid to speak his mind when necessary and is very much "for" the planet and ecology etc.
William will be good but he is too young and inexperienced in life, and needs to devote his time to his family and learning royal duties for some while yet....his time will come.

TheKeatingFive · 06/02/2022 09:09

or the income their very existence (and legacy) generates.

Oh do expand upon this please

Havanananana · 06/02/2022 09:10

“remint all the currency”

Those of us old enough to have received our pocket money in pre-decimal times when there were pounds, shillings and pence will have been used to getting pennies and shillings with many different monarchs' heads. Victoria, Edward VII, George V, George VI and Elizabeth coins were all in circulation - the Victorian ones were nearly 100 years old.

TheKeatingFive · 06/02/2022 09:10

Charles, William, George. I can't see any of them doing anything anything outrageous or sleezy.

What beyond what they've done already 😂

VelvetChairGirl · 06/02/2022 09:11

Long overdue getting rid of them should never have brought them back in the 1600s

Ifyoudontlaughyouwillcry · 06/02/2022 09:12

I trust the majority of the monarchy more than I trust all the self serving politicians. Whether it’s labour or Tory they all look after themselves and their mates. The monarchy is in safe hands with the Queen, Charles and William.

Pyewhacket · 06/02/2022 09:12

No

SleepingStandingUp · 06/02/2022 09:13

I don't think Charles will be the best yet but I also don't think we should abolish the monarchy. How would that even work

Pyewhacket · 06/02/2022 09:15

@VelvetChairGirl

They prefered a constitutional monarchy to a military dictatorship. Perhaps history wasn't one of your strengths at school ?.
MindyStClaire · 06/02/2022 09:15

We know who will be our country's figurehead for decades to come: Charles, William, George. I can't see any of them doing anything anything outrageous or sleezy.

Surely this is satire? Charles was involved in the most infamous extramarital affair of our time, and rumours of William's infidelity won't go away.

The idea of hereditary monarchy is ludicrous to me. But I do enjoy the pomp and ceremony, the ridiculous weddings etc. Not enough to vote to keep them of course.

"We should just skip to William" always amuses me. Let's keep this system where we don't get to choose the head of state, no matter how vile they are - but can we skip this next one anyway, just because he shagged someone who wasn't his wife?

NannyOggsWhiskyStash · 06/02/2022 09:16

The Royal Family are, and always have been a load of shite. Why on earth do we need to elevate one family above every other family in the UK? They cost us a fortune, are getting increasingly embarrassing and downright criminal, looking at you Andrew! Get rid

Furbulousnous · 06/02/2022 09:16

‘ So one awful human being in a family should remove all of them? ’

Oh trust me, I have a myriad of reasons why the Royal family should go, the ridiculousness of being ‘rules’ through hereditary privilege should be enough on its own but my comment was here was directed towards the use of ‘bad eggs’ in reference apparently to the Queens son who is accused of rape and sex with girls too young to consent while hanging out with a paedophile. I’d said he was a bit more than a ‘bad egg’ and he is being protected by his royal status and his inherited royal wealth .
Any ordinary man would have been in jail long before now…
