YABU Charles will be the next king, we can’t pick and choose and the system should go on

YANBU the monarchy should end and we get to vote on a president in future

Luckily Andrew has done Prince Charles’s work for him in showing why that should be!

LaChanticleer · 06/02/2022 09:43

I think the constitutional head of the country should be decided by a lottery. Every adult citizen entered and reigns for 20 years or death, whichever is the sooner.

It would get rid of the ridiculous deference culture that hampers the progress of this country, and would also stop the awful arrogant Charles Windsor from doing any more damage.

Thoosa · 06/02/2022 09:43

@GalesThisMorning

I asked this on another thread - how does it end? Do we vote them out? Who calls the vote?
Yes, this. It’s not a straightforward question of whether we want this system. The question is what’s the mechanism for deciding? We’ve missed our chance for a good old fashioned revolution.
GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 06/02/2022 09:44

Oh and Boris Johnson has done a good job of making an elected head of state seem a worse prospect - what if we got an idiot like him!

The Irish model seems to work. No Trumps, Blairs or Johnsons there.
Hawkins001 · 06/02/2022 09:46

what Would the advantages be ?

Furbulousnous · 06/02/2022 09:46

‘ I can't understand why we have a royal family. What for. How is it possible to be born to rule? Does that not seem entirely absurd when you really think about it?’

It does. Kings and Queens used to literally believe they were anointed by God. But back then they also believed in witches, so…

TheKeatingFive · 06/02/2022 09:46

*what if we got an idiot like him!

They could be voted out at the end of their term.

Get an arsehole like Andrew as King, stuck with him

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 06/02/2022 09:46

This isn’t a bad idea, and reminds me of the idea I had for House of Lords reform. We should have a system like jury service where people get selected for House of Lords service for a term of maybe one to four years. Paid for by state and jobs kept open etc. Would be brilliant!

TheKeatingFive · 06/02/2022 09:48

It does. Kings and Queens used to literally believe they were anointed by God.

I'd love to know what royalists think now. By what rights do these people wield such astonishing power and privilege?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 06/02/2022 09:48

Everyone is responding to me as though I hadn’t posted above saying I didn’t want a monarchy - I just said that Boris was making a good argument for the Monarchists not that I agreed with it!

Furbulousnous · 06/02/2022 09:49

No less mad than the system we have now where someone is our head of state by accident of birth ( oh and cos her uncle buggered off to be with a divorcee and got punished for it).

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 06/02/2022 09:51

Furbulousnous you’re extremely rude and aggressive!!!

TheKeatingFive · 06/02/2022 09:53

Bill Bryson had a good way of describing it ...

The eldest son of the eldest son of the eldest son of the eldest son of the eldest son of the eldest son of the man who fucked Nell Gwynn

Adjust for 'daughter' obvs.

Furbulousnous · 06/02/2022 09:53

‘ what if we got an idiot like him!

That’s the problem with democracy, you don’t always get what you personally voted for. I would still prefer to have that vote though.

Furbulousnous · 06/02/2022 09:55

‘The eldest son of the eldest son of the eldest son of the eldest son of the eldest son of the eldest son of the man who fucked Nell Gwynn’

Pretty much! Except there wasn’t any DNA testing back then so who the hell knows…

ivykaty44 · 06/02/2022 09:55

Can I have a ‘skip Charles as king’ option ?

That’s the president option, we either have a monarchy and don’t get to choose or we get to choose and we skip Charles and vote in who we want

Now imagine he was next in line to the throne and we couldn't get rid at all.
VladmirsPoutine · 06/02/2022 09:56

People talk about a presidential system as though it's something absurd, to be avoided at all costs yet are happy to have a royal family 'just because'.

IncompleteSenten · 06/02/2022 09:56

Yes it should.

It won't.

But it should

Ponoka7 · 06/02/2022 09:58

@AuxArmesCitoyens
"The royal family are the biggest hypocrites out there on environmental issues. Private jets to get to Cop26 ?"

William took the train and Charles was flown in by the RAF using sustainable fuel. The Queen couldn't attend. Charles has also swapped his cars to electric and sustainable fuel. Charles can't help that sustainable fuel wasn't available sooner. He's campaigned for it for decades.
Charles has been laughed at since the 80's for his conservation messages, but he was right. He had his life fucked up because he was in line to the throne. He should be King. William and Kate aren't ready, but tbh I don't rate the pair of them. Off script they struggle to speak.

Snog · 06/02/2022 09:59

I don't want a royal family - I don't think they are good figure heads or role models and they hoard wealth whilst UK citizens use food banks, struggle to heat their houses and have inadequate health
and social care.

Billionaires can also piss off, they are all evil in my opinion.

ivykaty44 · 06/02/2022 09:59

We’ve missed our chance for a good old fashioned revolution.

My theory on that is, the English aristocracy saw what happened in France and were very keen to send those they thought would be starting a revolution to Australia. Get rid of the fit poor and you the chance of revolution diminishes
