YABU Charles will be the next king, we can’t pick and choose and the system should go on

YANBU the monarchy should end and we get to vote on a president in future

Interesting links, NiceShrubbery. Thank you.

On the subject of the never to be decreased Sovereign Grant it's worth noting that while the Crown Estate income was hit hard with Covid related losses the royals weren't expected to tighten their belts like everyone else in the country hit by similar losses. The taxpayer made up the shortfall.

As for the claimed uplift effect on tourist revenue the only source I've ever found for the figures is a report issued by a branding consultant. There is no indication who commissioned the report or why and interestingly its launch coincided with the granting of a royal warrant to said branding consultant.

How depressing that people get a buzz because some rich nonentities are coming to visit. Sense of self worth needed.

MammaBell · 08/02/2022 17:15

How is it "fair" that anyone gets to be king/queen, especially due to birth right?

Why are people feeling sorry for Charles or William if they don't get their chance to be king??? There are FAR more deserving cases and causes for us to sympathise over!

Same reason why people get a buzz meeting a famous actor or footballer or whatever

Even stranger is the way famous actors, footballers etc get a buzz being presented to one of the royal family. At least the actors and celebrities have had to strive to achieve their position, rather than just be born into it. It's bizarre.

Not really. Actors etc human beings too with feelings and are allowed to be all gushy at whoever they like.

Of course they are. I just find it bizarre. Gushing over people who they consider their superior is odd imo. I mean the royals are just ordinary people.

Mellymolly · 08/02/2022 23:24

I don’t think it will change and apart from being slimmed down it probably shouldn’t

Flowersandjellybeans · 08/02/2022 23:28

YANBU. Retiring the concept of the divine birthright of kings and queens is an important step in creating a more equal society.

HelloFrostyMorning · 08/02/2022 23:31

NO. The Monarchy should NEVER end.

HTH.

Glad to see the poll results. More or less 50-50, with a slight majority to keep the Royals. That must really irk the haters! Grin

QuizzlyBear · 09/02/2022 08:40

God yes. We need to move the uk into the 21st century and prevent future generations from absorbing our toxic forelock-tugging mentality.

This country has a fixed idea about class that's very damaging - led by the very concept that one family is somehow 'better' than the rest of us by virtue of their birth. Someone we should actually BOW to. It boggles my mind...

Sparklybanana · 09/02/2022 08:53

Like the voted in prime minister is doing a marvellous of creating trust in the UK! The monarchy is a stable force in this country and even though the vast majority of us have no memory of there being anyone but the Queen, it doesn't mean we should give up on it completely. I think Charles and then William will do a great job. Like every family, there have been some wrong moves, but all in all, the monarchy does more good for us than not. Have we not seen in America and Russia that a president wealds way too much power - we've had a succession of old and mentally blunt white men in America and Russia is controlled by force with a megalomaniac who wants to recreate the 80s. Neither of them have proper accountability. At least our monarchy can't do anything crazy that drags the country down with them. Andrew and Harry have both been foolish but they have been cast adrift. No president for me thanks!

TooOldToBeAGoth · 09/02/2022 11:14

Flowersandjellybeans · 09/02/2022 11:23

Not bizarre at all Confused

Perfectly valid question to ask

Well they're obviously not doing much stabilising. Hmm.......a rather expensive family to keep too. I'd rather have a democratically voted in president any day, rather like the rest of the world. Good example being Ireland. No idea why the US is always held up as an example.
Ciaram55 · 09/02/2022 11:56

We've also got a prime minister with a lot of power.

How bizarre to think it's bizarre Confused
TheKeatingFive · 09/02/2022 11:58

No president for me thanks!

You really should educate yourself as to what the various models of presidency actually are. The ignorance is astounding if your only touch points are Russia and US.

TheKeatingFive · 09/02/2022 11:59

Why would it be bizarre to question the relevance of a medieval style of governance for the present day?

So people who see the wrongness in having a one super privileged family reigning over us and somehow thought of as our "betters" are haters? Dear me.
NiceShrubbery · 09/02/2022 12:31

Yes indeed. Questioners are vitriolic and evil. Satan worshippers probably.

DGRossetti · 09/02/2022 19:27

51:49 in favour of ditching the freeloaders.

Democracy has spoken. They have to go.
