To wash my fruit and veg?

Do you wash your fruit and veg before eating?
I usually wash the fruit when I buy it as the kids aren't going to be bothering with that.

Do you wash your fruit and veg or just cook it as it comes?

YABU = Don't bother washing them - I don't.
YANBU = yes of course wash them!

I have never done it. I also eat blackberries straight off the bush.

Awrite · 05/02/2022 22:17

Yes, always. Not to get dirt off though. It's to wash off any pesticides, chemicals, etc.

Squirrelblanket · 05/02/2022 22:19

Nope. Unless it has obvious visible dirt on it.

DdraigGoch · 05/02/2022 22:19

Fruit? No, unless I've dropped it.

Veg? Just enough to get the mud off where necessary.

DorothyZbornakIsAQueen · 05/02/2022 22:22

I haven't voted because you're neither unreasonable or reasonable.

I've never bothered and we're all still here to tell the tale.

Also, I have the constitution of an ox. Never get ill. Never have diarrhoea or vomiting.

But, whatever you choose to do is fine.

playaaa · 05/02/2022 22:22

Of course you should wash them. There can be both listeria and residue of pesticides on there otherwise I believe!

goodwinter · 05/02/2022 22:23

I only ever wash lettuce, because of the sheer amount of bugs I find on it.

Quornflakegirl · 05/02/2022 22:23

I always wash fruit and vegetables thoroughly. I even wash melons before cutting them up.

goodwinter · 05/02/2022 22:23

Oh and mushrooms/potatoes if they have visible dirt on!

goodwinter · 05/02/2022 22:24

Even though you presumably don't eat the rind? Genuinely curious.... Why?
MyDogsSpeakItalian · 05/02/2022 22:25

I always wash fruit and veg. I know someone who worked in a warehouse dealing with fruit and veg, trust me when I say you will want to wash them. 😬

SamanthaVimes · 05/02/2022 22:25

I wash them but only because DH prefers that i do. Left to my own devices I’d only wash it obviously muddy / dirty.

Vargas · 05/02/2022 22:26

Yes but only if non-organic and/or visibly dirty.

Imsittinginthekitchensink · 05/02/2022 22:27

I wash fruit and vegetables because if you have ever stood behind someone who manhandles the produce before choosing them, you will know they could have all kinds of grim on them. Mud I can handle. Straight from the blackberry bush as per pp - fine. Dropped and squashed by a random in the supermarket? No fucking chance.

ouch321 · 05/02/2022 22:28

Often not.
More likely if bought loose.

cheekychaplin · 05/02/2022 22:30

I never have, I was in my 30s before I realised people did.

BlackMagicWimpund · 05/02/2022 22:30

I wash everything that can’t be peeled (so apples, lettuce, grapes but not melon, bananas, oranges etc). It’s basic hygiene, surely? Still doesn’t mean you won’t consume pesticides though.

I have never washed anything, and am still here to tell the tale.
IwishICouldTurnBackTime · 05/02/2022 22:32

I always wash fruit and vegs. They go through being on the backs of tractors, conveyors belts and being handled by people who may not wash their hands. Some fruit/veg packaging recommends you wash before eating, but each to their own.......

BlackMagicWimpund · 05/02/2022 22:32

Also, we get a veg box and the amount of bugs that come out of the leafy greens etc when it’s all washed is horrendous!

TheLeadbetterLife · 05/02/2022 22:33

I sometimes wash fruit, but I know it’s pointless - what’s cold water supposed to achieve?

I know it’s all covered in literal shit, but that’s probably good for the gut. I’ve never got sick from not washing anyway.

BlackMagicWimpund · 05/02/2022 22:34

I have never washed anything, and am still here to tell the tale.

Which proves precisely nothing. Not everyone catches listeria from unwashed lettuce but I’d still rather reduce the chances of that happening!

freecuthbert · 05/02/2022 22:35

I wash lettuce/anything leafy because there's usually bugs on it! I rinse any visible dirt off veg but I don't generally wash as it all gets cooked anyway which kills the germs. Can't say I ever washed fruit though... unless there was visible dirt but I don't remember that happening. I've lived to tell the tale clearly. And I've not heard of anyone dying from listeria because they didn't wash their fruit, is this really a thing as a PP suggests?? I don't think there is a right or wrong, for me life is too short for that.

Cissyandflora · 05/02/2022 22:36

This is why I don’t like juice bars. All the fancy carrot and orange juice and I just know they’re not washing the fruit and vegetables first.
It’s important to wash it. Pesticides and germs from handling. I know it won’t get rid of all pesticide residue but at least a wash with water is good after it’s been handled and transported.

RoseMartha · 05/02/2022 22:36

Yes always
