To wash my fruit and veg?

Do you wash your fruit and veg before eating?
I usually wash the fruit when I buy it as the kids aren't going to be bothering with that.

Do you wash your fruit and veg or just cook it as it comes?

YABU = Don't bother washing them - I don't.
YANBU = yes of course wash them!

Nope. Don’t wash anything

I also encourage dc to pick blackberries off the bushes and eat those too if they want to

DdraigGoch · 06/02/2022 19:07

It does actually say on f&v packaging to wash before use - this is a very standard thing, not a MN crazy hygiene thing.

That's just there to stop them being sued if someone doesn't spot the very obvious snail on it.

MyGlassKeepsLeaking · 06/02/2022 19:08

I've never washed fruit or vegetables. My sister-in-law spends ages washing every bloody thing.

DdraigGoch · 06/02/2022 19:08

@LadyLolaRuben

I Always wash. I live in a rural area and the chemicals they spray is unbelievable. Plus I've had farm workers tell me if desperate they will pee in the fields as they work
My geography teacher used to holiday at a friend's caravan. Any urine would be poured on the tomato plants. Apparently they were the best tomatoes he'd ever tasted.
DdraigGoch · 06/02/2022 19:16

@SpaghettiArmsMurderer

You don’t need to be taught to wash f&v, it says it on the packaging.
What packaging? I buy everything loose.
DillDanding · 06/02/2022 19:18

I would only wash visible mud off - just can't be bothered otherwise.

iamsmaller1 · 06/02/2022 19:19

I worked fruit picking years ago though.. I'd wash it! Not many walk all the way back across the fields to the toilet.. on the fruit it goes

DdraigGoch · 06/02/2022 19:23

@VladmirsPoutine @astroboy45 I hope that you two don't wash raw meat. That's a sure-fire way to splatter dangerous bacteria across your utensils and surfaces.

VladmirsPoutine · 06/02/2022 19:24

@astroboy45

No correlation but I bet most of the people that are saying they don’t wash their fruit or veg also don’t wash their meat or their legs in the shower lol

I do indeed. Fish, chicken and meat. To not is filthy imo.

MeatPieWoman · 06/02/2022 19:24

I'm not convinced a rinse in cold water can do much.

@DdraigGoch I love this argument when it comes to not washing meat. I’m not an incompetent child that splashes water all over the surface when washing meat. It’s very simple putting meal in a bowl of cold water and lemon/lime juice and putting it to the side to cleanse. It’s just as simple to then rinse the meat and pour the water down the drain. I’m also able to then wash the surface. It’s really not rocket science and I don’t know how people can eat meat they haven’t washed

DappledThings · 06/02/2022 19:34

But what are you washing? I don't get the point of it. Fruit and veg I can kind of see the point of (although I don't see myself being arsed ever) in that there may be pesticides or traces of soil on them but meat? Bacteria are going to be killed by cooking it.

Wouldn't wash meat as that's really daft to do Do wash my legs every single day in the shower
MyDogsSpeakItalian · 06/02/2022 19:43

I don’t eat meat but isn’t the bacteria actually in the meat so you can’t wash it off, unlike with fruit and veg?

CourtRand · 06/02/2022 19:46

Yes. So I don't eat pesticides or manure

astroboy45 · 06/02/2022 20:02

I wash the meat because you don’t know if it’s been dropped on the floor before it’s been packaged and things like that. I can’t imagine taking my meat out of the fridge, putting all my seasoning on it and then just cooking it without washing it. Each to their own but just because it says you don’t need to wash it on the pack, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t wash it.
This is why I don’t eat at people’s houses lol, the majority don’t even wash their meat smh

ihaveonecat · 06/02/2022 20:14

If I'm cooking something at 200c then I'm not too fussed if it's been dropped on the floor to be honest, not much is surviving that

Just as @astroboy45 said, this is why you can't be eating at everybody's house.

This is why YOU can't be eating at everybody's house. I'll continue to give it zero headspace and cheerfully eat wherever I'm invited.

astroboy45 · 06/02/2022 20:32

@VladmirsPoutine no honestly!😂
I’d hate to know what else goes on in these people’s kitchens🤦‍♀️

You’re assuming they season their meat. 😆
