To wash my fruit and veg?

Marmm · 05/02/2022 22:14

Do you wash your fruit and veg before eating?
I usually wash the fruit when I buy it as the kids aren't going to be bothering with that.

Do you wash your fruit and veg or just cook it as it comes?

YABU = Don't bother washing them - I don't.
YANBU = yes of course wash them!

Pesticides and herbicides !

Wnkingawalrus · 06/02/2022 21:24

Each to their own but just because it says you don’t need to wash it on the pack, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t wash it.

No, it’ll be the food scientists that tell you you shouldn’t wash it.

Chichimcgee · 06/02/2022 21:24

Pesticides and herbicides !

Tasty 😋

astroboy45 · 06/02/2022 22:13

@MeSanniesareBrannies haha right😂 the amount of times I’ve seen people say they don’t season their meat or will only use salt and pepper for ‘flavour.’ Yet here I am still trying to have faith in them!

ihaveonecat · 06/02/2022 22:17

I would never eat just plain grilled chicken, always add something even if it's just paprika or lemon or lime or garlic. Plain to me is garlic and lemon. Salt and pepper goes without saying

And I'm just out the shower having washed my entire body twice (I do a soap base clean and then a shower wash) Wink

MeSanniesareBrannies · 06/02/2022 22:18

@astroboy45 ‘Tis a life of unwashed unseasoned chicken and I wish them all the best with it. 😂

savehannah · 06/02/2022 22:25

@FlasherMcGruff

I think not washing things that have been in the ground / on trees / covered in manure or fertiliser / sprayed with pesticides / handled by various people before eating them is pretty poor hygiene.

Probably the same people who wash their dirty knickers with their tea towels on a 30 degree wash.

The NHS says you should do it. I’ll trust that.

You are actually right. I don't wash fruit and veg, and I wash all clothing, tea towels, towels, bedding on a 30 degree wash. As said previously, my whole family is extremely healthy and never ill. Humans were not designed to live in a sterile environment.
astroboy45 · 06/02/2022 22:32

@MeSanniesareBrannies I don’t envy them at all! I’ve always wondered how unseasoned meat (especially chicken) tastes but my mind won’t allow me to experiment and try it😂😂
it must be awful

VladmirsPoutine · 06/02/2022 22:47

I always find retorts like this hilarious, as if it's some kinda gotcha to be proud of being dirty because 'CoZ sCiEnCe SeZ sO'

Eh? There is nothing dirty about not washing meat. You clearly have some kind of OCD or issues around hygiene. It’s not just that there is no specific advice to wash meat, the specific advice is do not wash meat. Yet you seem to think those who don’t are dirty. Bizarre.
MeSanniesareBrannies · 06/02/2022 23:06

@Wnkingawalrus There is also specific advice to wash fruit and veg. Yet the same people who trot out the guidance re not washing meat ignore the guidance to wash fruit and veg.

The scientific guidelines around food hygiene apparently only interest them when said guidelines endorse what they’re doing (or not doing).

ihaveonecat · 06/02/2022 23:17

For me the thing is washing meat isn't necessary and it can be dangerous and spread bacteria around the kitchen
Not washing fruit and veg doesn't affect anyone but me, doesn't spread bacteria around the kitchen

If people want to wash their fruit and veg then of course carry on but washing meat is just well, a bit daft. What is it washing off that an oven at 200c isn't killing?

DappledThings · 06/02/2022 23:21

If I was going to make any randomly unfounded association between taste and hygiene it would go the other way. The obsessive washing of foodstuffs and prissiness about it would seem to me more likely to be the preserve of those scared of flavours.

A more relaxed attitude seems more in keeping with an adventurous palate. But then like I say, it would be rand and unfounded.

And yes, I do wash all laundry together. At 40 but underwear does mix with tea towels quite happily.

MeSanniesareBrannies · 06/02/2022 23:27

@ihaveonecat You cook all your meat in the oven at 200C? I certainly don’t. And, as has been stated multiple times on this thread, we’re not waving the meat around the kitchen as we wash it. Every African culture, every Caribbean culture and most Asian cultures washes meat as a matter of course. As we’re not dying out, I think I’ll keep doing it.

MeSanniesareBrannies · 06/02/2022 23:29

@DappledThings I think you’ll find that the cultures (as stated in my comment above) where washing of all food (meat and veg) is standard are also cultures with an understanding of bold flavours and seasoning. But, carry on. 😂

VladmirsPoutine · 06/02/2022 23:33

I don't care about the GuIdANcE - not washing meat and veg etc to me is a hallmark of filth.

Ylvamoon · 06/02/2022 23:45

Grin this thread is great!

And for the record: I wash my fruit & veg, I also wash my meat! Everyone in my household is fit and healthy and no food poisoning to date. 👏
(I always thought the not washing comes from the cheap meat producers. I understand they add chemicals in order to absorb water ...)

Marmm · 07/02/2022 06:34

I have never heard of anyone washing meat until now.

OP posts:
SpaghettiArmsMurderer · 07/02/2022 08:34

@DdraigGoch not everything is available loose. Spinach, berries etc. I strongly doubt that there is anyone in this country who has never bought packaged produce.

SpaghettiArmsMurderer · 07/02/2022 08:35

Washing meat is grim Envy not envy

Sceptre86 · 07/02/2022 08:37

I wash all the vegetables. Fruit I will eat straight from the container. I will wash it for the kids though or guests.

Sceptre86 · 07/02/2022 08:39

I wash all meat. I'm asian.

Thank you!! I can’t get past the comments about spreading bacteria around surfaces/the kitchen. We’re all capable of washing meat in a bowl, we don’t go splashing and chucking water everywhere like a 3 year old in a bath. It’s a bit ridiculous to think so really.
As mentioned, these cultures have been washing their meat for years and years. It’s somewhat insulting for so many people of English culture to suggest that we’re incapable of washing meat in a safe way🤦‍♀️

Gizacluethen · 07/02/2022 08:44

I don't because I don't believe for a second that water alone gets rid of pesticides and listeria and such and people can't possibly be washing with soap?
I run leaves under water because they trap soil and scrub soil off root vegetables most of the time.
