To wash my fruit and veg?

Do you wash your fruit and veg before eating?
I usually wash the fruit when I buy it as the kids aren't going to be bothering with that.

Do you wash your fruit and veg or just cook it as it comes?

YABU = Don't bother washing them - I don't.
YANBU = yes of course wash them!

I wash anything I will eat raw or won't be peeled. I usually forget my fruit and veg bags at the supermarket so it all goes loose onto the checkout and trolley, plus its handled by a lot of people and people sometimes don't wash their hands 😁

purplecorkheart · 06/02/2022 00:44

Yes without a doubt unless I have grown them myself or can peel them.

AnotherMansCause · 06/02/2022 00:58

I wash all fruit & vegetables that don't get peeled, whether I'm going to eat them raw or cooked. I read that pesticides, fungal spores & moulds, bacteria etc can exacerbate migraines, which I get a lot of. It's a simple thing & it may help. I use a proper fruit & veg wash, & rinse it off thoroughly.

DoubleShotEspresso · 06/02/2022 00:59

@DappledThings

You surely wash new clothes and bedding? Nope. Never knew this was a thing till I was on MN.
It's always been a thing. That is truly rancid sorry 🤷🏼‍♀️
DoubleShotEspresso · 06/02/2022 01:01

@Wnkingawalrus
You wash fruit which has skin you will not eat? That’s not something to be proud of.
It's got far more to do with common sense and basic hygiene than it has pride.

ThePelicansBriefs · 06/02/2022 01:02

Yes to previous poster who said to soak in vinegar water first. Let it dry on a towel and put in Tupperware boxes instead of the original packaging. Your produce will last way longer!

Willyoujustbequiet · 06/02/2022 01:11

Grim if you dont wash them 🤮

Soil has e-coli which can kill. Pesticides etc.. and God knows who/what else has touched them.

Go lick trolley handles while you're at it.

OldieWordly · 06/02/2022 01:17

@MyDogsSpeakItalian

I always wash fruit and veg. I know someone who worked in a warehouse dealing with fruit and veg, trust me when I say you will want to wash them. 😬
Yes, if people could see how goods are stored and handled, they would was fruit and veg more than the do.

Remember folks, so many people don't wash their hands after going to the toilet. Some of the people could be handling your frit and veg before it goes onnthe shelves! Hmm

TheTeenageYears · 06/02/2022 01:17

Yes, always wash with or soak in water with bicarbonate of soda.

Hawkins001 · 06/02/2022 01:19

Yes, it's always best to wash it first, as even if no visible dirt, their is still usually bacteria, and germs.

Always wash them. Fruit pickers also pick their noses and sneeze from time to time.

OldieWordly · 06/02/2022 01:33

I'm always amazed at people's notions of hygiene.

For some you are a manky person if you do not have a shower every day, but it's perfectly alright to not wash fruit or veg before eating.

As the saying goes 'there's nowt so queer as folk'.

Wildrobin · 06/02/2022 01:38

I wash fruit purely because I don’t trust pesticides and I just googled and apparently 75%-80% does wash off with water (no idea of reliability or source of this info but I’ve always thought there’s no harm in a rinse under the tap in case helps)
I otherwise don’t worry about a bit of soil on organic veg say and most of the nutrients seem just under the skin so I try not to peel them .

I’m actually surprised so few people wash fruit as I’m very relaxed generally and wary of antibacterial stuff etc but thought a quick wash with water was the norm!
Meanwhile I’m quite curious anyone wants to bother washing a melon too when you only eat the inside

greenlynx · 06/02/2022 01:56

I wash all fruits and vegs (and new bedding as well).
I like fruits but not germs, bacteria or pesticides.

AffIt · 06/02/2022 02:29

No. I know I should, but I mostly don't.

Will sometimes wash grapes, if I'm feeling fancy.

StripedMousse · 06/02/2022 02:34

Yes of course, you don’t know who’s touched it before reaching you or what they’ve been doing.

Flowersandhearts · 06/02/2022 02:36

Always.

One of the most common ways of catching Norovirus is from fruit and veg that has been hand picked especially raspberries and lettuce.

I would be less worried about picking and eating an unwashed blackberry myself than about eating supermarket berries, which have been hand picked by random strangers who may well not wash their hands after using the loo.

Wingedharpy · 06/02/2022 02:43

@Wildrobin: The melon thing was explained upthread.
It's washed because otherwise, as you slice through it to portion it, the knife picks up whatever nasties are on the unwashed skin and drags them into the edible part of the melon.
Love Mumsnet for this sort of stuff.Wink

LoveFall · 06/02/2022 05:26

I have washed (rather summarily) most fruit we have ever eaten, unless straight off the vine etc. mostly to get off dirt, but also with sprays in mind.

Veg I rinse before peeling etc. Just what my Mom taught me.

Lettuce, kale, chard, spinach, a bit of a soak to release slugs etc. to just rinse off.

No over worrying involves in this, just a quick rinse!

Spookytooth · 06/02/2022 06:02

Google search - For instance, a Pesticide Action Network Analysis of pesticide residues using USDA data found 54 different pesticide residues were detected among strawberry samples. The testing turned up nine known or probable carcinogens, 24 suspected hormone disruptors, 11 neurotoxins, 12 developmental or reproductive toxins, and 19 honeybee toxins. Traces of fungicides captan and pyraclostrobin turned up on more than half of strawberry samples tested.

Ok this is the US but I doubt unless they are organic that UK fruit is chemical free. I read somewhere that the most sprayed fruit it blueberries!

It may have ways been a thing for some people (washing bedding before first use) but as previous threads on the subject show it's certainly not universal. And definitely not something anyone I've ever lived with has done.
