Obviously he's running scared from his own side as well and Labour and the excellent contribution from Ian Blackford - no doubt Dennis Skinner would have done the same if still an MP.

However, there was no need for Johnson to stoop to the level of more lies - this time trying smear Kier Starmer with untrue allegations about Jimmy Savile.

Second - people DID alter their behaviour despite there being few restrictions. People didn't need to be told that it would not be a good idea to mix much so there was less mixing than there would have been

Exactly. Office parties and other get togethers were being cancelled all over the place. My family cancelled a proposed restaurant meet-up. None of that at no. 10, however.

DePfeffoff · 05/02/2022 17:28

my point on all threads has always been we need stability in the covid recovery stage not leadership contests.

But we also need a leadership that obeys it's own rules and can be trusted not to lie all the bloody time. It's absolutely extraordinary that you put your supposed "stability" over the need for at least a degree of trustworthiness and honesty.

Suppose tomorrow a new and much more deadly and transmissible variant of Covid emerges. What hope do you imagine Johnson has of imposing any effective procedures to keep infections down?

Imo the workplace gatherings weren't illegal, but the Met will decide

And yet the law is clear. Gatherings were only allowed if reasonably necessary for work. Manifestly BYOB parties and birthday get-togethers weren't necessary. But let's carry on pretending that the law isn't the law, shall we?

Any thoughts on this?

It's awful isn't it. Her parents should be ashamed of themselves encouraging letter writing when she has the facts wrong. It wasn't a party. I feel sorry for any kid that has parents that pull a stunt like this.

I've been partying all afternoon in that case. Coffee and cake at m&s then DM's. I need a lie down.

Parker231 · 05/02/2022 17:58

Great little girl - good to see some responsibility in her age. Children have been covering Partygate in their Citizenship classes in primary school.

If he had a beer when he had his cake, does that become a party?

www.itv.com/news/2022-02-04/pm-reportedly-pictured-with-beer-at-lockdown-breaking-birthday-bash

He came in to the Cabinet Room, was ambushed by a cake, there seems to have been food present and he appears to have had a beer as well.

Did he down it in 10 minutes or leave a bit?

SueSaid · 05/02/2022 18:06

'If he had a beer when he had his cake, does that become a party?'

Well no, Starmer (sorry about whataboutery aka giving balance) had a beer and that was work.

For me a party would involve a social do involving invited guests (not colleagues in the workplace), to a residence (not an office) and crucially lasting longer than 10 mins. Still I suppose if you only have experience of cake with colleagues in an office you may believe that to be a party. It isn't.

Languishingonthesidelines · 05/02/2022 18:06

@JaniieJones you do realise your steadfast defense of Johnson makes you appear slightly odd. His advisors of many years are deserting him. No one really wants to be associated with him. He's damaging the Conservative brand to the point where they will be seen as unelectable for many years to come. Appreciate you may be a conservative party member but your unswerving loyalty to one man is showing you up.

Here we have real live one attacking a 7 year old girl in order to defend the birthday party of a 56 year old.

You could not make it up.

Parker231 · 05/02/2022 18:10

Children understand exactly what happened!

NETSRIK · 05/02/2022 18:11

Some posters on here cannot be for real! Only on these threads to wind us all up. They must be very very bored. More fool me for trying to argue with them though 🤦🏻‍♀️

'you do realise your steadfast defense of Johnson makes you appear slightly odd.'

Odd. Thanks very much. Look, many many people can see this for the media witch hunt it is. Lord Ahmed (heard of him?) imprisoned for years for child sex offences yet hardly a whiff from our rabid media who are more interested in ousting Johnson.

I'm not a diehard 'fangirl' 'shill' whatever insult you fancy chucking at me I just can see its all been massively overegged and people need to wait for the met report. Paul Brand and Pippa Crera do not run the country.

Anyway got to dash I'm just off to a party. Back in 10mins.

SueSaid · 05/02/2022 18:24

Are you a telly reporter? A 'live one' Confused. For clarity I wasn't 'attacking a 7 year old girl', what a nasty thing to say, more criticising her parents. But you know that.

It really is best not to engage with them, but sometimes they say such daft things, it is difficult to not respond!

'you do realise your steadfast defense of Johnson makes you appear slightly odd.'

Or deluded. Also Lord Ahmed has been all over the news.

I am struggling with this notion that it is a media witch hunt.

Boris Johnson had a birthday party in June 2020 whilst he was denying that to millions of children.

Where is the witch hunt?

Boris chose to have the party, he chose to lie in parliament, he is choosing not to resign.

I am struggling with this notion that it is a media witch hunt

It’s part of the standard Tory defence. Peter Bone came out with it too. Oddly it’s the only issue on which I’ve ever seen the media unanimously take the same view. From the Telegraph to the Guardian, all saying the same things. When you see Allison Pearson and Polly Toynbee united it’s huge.

Is it an acknowledgement that Johnson is a witch and needs hunting?
Peregrina · 05/02/2022 18:55

It's a sorry reflection on some adults in the country, which includes Tory MPs, when young children know that the PM having a party when they weren't allowed to is wrong.

jgw1 · 05/02/2022 19:01

Is the 'back in 10 mins' supposed to be amusing?

I think the whole post is probably meant to be satire.

SueSaid · 05/02/2022 19:01

'I am struggling with this notion that it is a media witch hunt'

'It’s part of the standard Tory defence'

It really isn't. Many people can see clearly the utterly unbalanced reporting. Starmer has beer and it's essential work, Johnson does it's rule breaking.

They should have been stricter. After the widespread hysteria following Cumming's exceptional circumstances trip to his family for child care they had a taste of how the public respond to these things so it does seem incredibly stupid that they weren't whiter than white regarding 'the rules'.

That said, again the Met will decide what if anything broke the law. Not itv or The Mirror.

The widespread misogyny aimed at Dorries is awful. Again if people cackle like this over Ange and her ringlets there's uproar.

Blossomtoes · 05/02/2022 19:04

It’s not misogyny. She’s tarred with the same brush as Peter Bone, they’re both complete jokes - haven’t seen any defence of him.
