I agree with a lot of what you're saying thecatfromjapan

Re 'levelling up'. Real levelling up wouldn't be region dependant. There is need (and desperate poverty) in every part of the UK, including wealthy southern and northern areas (like Rishi Sunak's affluent Richmond, York's constituency).

Kensington and Chelsea's marked inequality - with multi plus mansions next to Grenfell is just an extreme example of every region of the UK.

It does feel a bit bleak but I guess all we can do is hope. There are some not utterly terrible MPs in both main parties. Whether we get one as PM, well 🤞

jgw1 · 03/02/2022 19:10

@Tealightsandd

Gove done stabbing people?

Nope. He's making a good attempt at stabbing long suffering Londoners.

He recently unveiled his latest 'levelling up' wheeze. New homes to be built in the Midlands and the North. Sweet FA for London...

.... despite London being the epicentre of the public health housing and homelessness emergency.

Two thirds of all of England's homeless families are in London.

Still, most (outside of London) won't care. Not yet. They will once the consequences bite. The resulting inflated house prices that leave locals priced out. Plus increased pollution. They're already complaining about priced out Londoners moving in. They ain't seen nothing yet.

If you want to learn more about levelling up I think you need to take a read about the Montgomery Canal.

£16million pounds for restoring 4 miles of canal which according to the Tory MP is going to transform Montgomeryshire's economy.

@thecatfromjapan

I hear what you're saying, Tealights. But, you know, a lot of us here have always thought the basic trajectory of the Conservative Party was/is towards the ERG - that was part and parcel of the tragedy of Brexit.

That (continued) move to the (further) economic right is something a lot of us have factored in.

We know there is nothing we can do about it. Except wait it out, call it out, and hope for a better result in another GE.

Taking a small amount of joy in Johnson's evisceration is ... well, it's stopping to smell the roses amidst the devastation. It's hearing the wild song from the woods during a day of grind that feeds the soul's hunger for hope ....

It's not an unknowing delight. It's a shade of violet made brighter by knowledge of the surrounding dark.

This is exactly how I feel.
thecatfromjapan · 03/02/2022 19:23

We're about to see standards of living drop to a level below that at which such records began (30 years ago).

That's ... huge.

It's going to be devastating. For us. For me. For you.

The terrifying thing is that some of the people behind Johnson - and now behind Sunsk - factored that in.

So, much as I hop that the shit coming down the line might end up with a GE realignment, and even the Conservatives waking up and kicking out the ERG nutters - I don't see that happening.

I wish - and I really mean this - people like Tobias Elwood and Rory Stewart getting their Party back ... I just don't see it happening.

I do wish that would happen.

The current faction in charge of the Conservative Party do not have the same sense of shared vslues that the Parties of old had.

By that, I don't mean some sort of cynical, 'they're all the same' thing.

I mean quite the opposite.

The ERG contains people who really don't give a shit about things like democracy, basic living standards for humans, safe working conditions - the whole post-war consensus thing.

They have an entirely different set of political objectives - ones that are outright scary for the majority of us.

The best we can hope for is an election result bad enough to drive these people out of the Conservative Party.

But, I fear, that wish may not be granted.

I think it goes to demonstrate just how out of touch the Tories are. A canal really isn't going to revive a neglected rural area, this is not the 19th century. The canal goes into North Shropshire, and we know what the locals there thought about the current government.
thecatfromjapan · 03/02/2022 19:26

The U.K. should be so, so, so angry about what this small group of people has done to the U.K. and to us.

Notonthestairs · 03/02/2022 19:26

@TokyoSushi

Just a wild thought, but if the tide really is turning against Johnson, I wonder if Sunak would resign? On principle, just to distance himself as far as possible from all the shit and then run for leader on an 'I thought it was disgraceful, I'd never do such a thing' ticket.

It would be a gamble, but it's not like he'd be destitute if it all went wrong...

It would be one way to place him as "morally superior". I'm laughing as I type....as indeed Sunak did when Johnson smeared Starmer.

They really are a bunch of cretins but they are taking us down with them.

I've said it before but clinging to Johnson as better the devil you know won't work. They were going to ditch him before the next election and bring in a fresh face. This way the new candidate will have to own whatever happens in the next couple of years.

I'm depressed, angry and really worried.

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 03/02/2022 19:27

‘If people think it's bad now...

It's one thing if Boris is going. But to cheer on an even more to the right replacement...?’

And this is what will happen but unfortunately a section of the electorate can’t be told. They’ll vote themselves into third world poverty in order to spite others at the behest of offshore media owners. I’m done with it now.

ClaudineClare · 03/02/2022 19:33

Yep, that is exactly what the Brexiteers did in the 2019 GE. They were all told the carnage that would ensue if Johnson got in, but they would have voted the devil in if it got Brexit "done".

TokyoSushi · 03/02/2022 19:34

I think he might you know @Notonthestairs He certainly views himself as 'different & special' 🙄

ClaudineClare · 03/02/2022 19:36

I don't think Sunak will be the next PM. I am not sure who will be, though.

This one hundred per cent, it makes me incandescent with rage & sorrow that a handful of nutters have wrecked such devastation & continue heaping upon us day after every fucking day.
ENoeuf · 03/02/2022 19:43

Oooh Martin Reynolds has left as well - sounds like a push not a jump.

ENoeuf · 03/02/2022 19:45

And Dan Rosenfield

ENoeuf · 03/02/2022 19:45

Larry will be next

ClaudineClare · 03/02/2022 19:46

There's going to be no-one senior left to carry the can for Johnson.

Blossomtoes · 03/02/2022 19:48

What a shitshow this is.

ClaudineClare · 03/02/2022 19:50

Although, is this actually them carrying the can? Will Johnson now say he offered them the chance to resign rather than be sacked, and they have all done the decent thing?

Notonthestairs · 03/02/2022 19:50

I wonder if Sunak could return to being a backbencher and wait it out. Let Truss take the next fall and then move in. I don't suppose he's in a rush.

thecatfromjapan · 03/02/2022 19:51

It's ... it's actually getting a bit farcical now ...

ClaudineClare · 03/02/2022 19:51

It certainly is a shit show, playing out against a background of catastrophe for ordinary people.

GreenLunchBox · 03/02/2022 19:52

So last night the Tories voted to cut tax for the super-wealthy from 8% to 3% on profits over £25 million. Every single one of the fuckers voted for it. Yet this NI hike and freezing of the Personal Allowance is ' the right thing to do'.

Fucking bastards

Why are we not revolting?

ClaudineClare · 03/02/2022 19:52

We will need a new thread soon.
