That's how Trump got away with it for so long, he made everyone laugh

Until it wasn't funny anymore and he become the clown from It.

True

I see Gove has been up and said Johnson doesn't have to apologise for the Savile smear. Good. That's him sullied as well.

The current cabinet do seem to have very low moral standards don't they.
merrymouse · 02/02/2022 10:39

I think that in the circumstances the Saville comment just makes him sound nasty, but possibly worse from the POV of the Tory party, unstable and desperate.

Starmer was talking for people from all parts of the political spectrum when he made his speech. By not taking him seriously and responding in such an unethical way, Johnson insulted them all.

This was not a time for the ‘cut and thrust’ of Parliament, and the fact that so many cabinet members don’t recognise that is shameful for the Conservative Party.

Blossomtoes · 02/02/2022 10:46

Are po faced prigs a bit like girly swots? If so we need an awful lot more of them. Johnson is nothing like a clown, he’s a dangerous sociopath who will stop at nothing to protect his position. He wouldn’t piss on his cronies if they were on fire once they stop being useful to him.

Peregrina · 02/02/2022 11:22

I think you've got it there derxa:
Unfortunately although I had to come down on characters like this they made me laugh. Soz

You didn't just let the class clowns run riot - you kept them in order. Who is keeping Johnson in order? A better man than Johnson might realise that he's no good at the day to day stuff and surround himself with an able Cabinet who could do the heavy lifting, but instead he has surrounded himself with toadies and lightweights. Wheeling out Nadine Dorries FFS to defend him.

Peregrina · 02/02/2022 11:31

Gove reveals his levelling up plans. This will cost money. Just think how the £8.7b in PPE losses and £4.3b lost to fraud is now no longer available to prime the pump.

Alexandra2001 · 02/02/2022 11:50

@derxa

I would rather be a "po-faced prig" (how very Blytonesque!)than the supporter of an amoral bastard who will run roughshod over the victims of rape and sexual abuse in order to score pathetic political points. Yes but I'm not defending Johnson. This is how he gets away with so much.
mmm i think he still has quite a bit of public support because he does the sorts of things they also do - cheat, lie, bully, steal, racist & are incompetent.

A lot people are not decent or nice & he appeals to these people, same with Trump, that tape on how he talked about women or abused the Muslim parents of a dead war hero - none of it dented his popularity.

BJ has been saying some very disgusting things over the last decade & was sacked for lying, procreates like an alley cat but yet we all vote for him/his party - over half of Tory voters think he should stay... these people are like him and doubtless behave like him too.

Batholemubrecht · 02/02/2022 12:06

Gove squirmed horrendously in that interview. Asking us to show sensitivity to Saville's victims when his own leader made a random slur to political point score. The irony.

jgw1 · 02/02/2022 13:01

@ClaudineClare

This is turning into a massive own goal for Johnson, isn't it?
Johnson is so good at own goals, I wonder if he was to take a penalty with no goalkeeper he would still manage to score an own goal.
jgw1 · 02/02/2022 13:05

Don't forget to include the billions in profits made by suppliers of PPE, consultants to track and trace and so on.

The magic money tree was well and truly working when it came to lining the pockets of the rich, but somehow when it comes to investing in the country there isn't any money.

From FullFact’s Twitter re the Office for Statistics Regulation’s complaint to Johnson about employment claims:

—————
❌Boris Johnson: "More people in work now than before the pandemic began."

This is not true. There are 600,000 fewer. The
@StatsRegulation
literally wrote to Downing Street about this false claim yesterday.

The PM must correct the official record.

Who needs truth, decency or even a vague attempt to stick to the ministerial code anymore? Not this bunch!

What I don't understand is that statistics that say that employment is up, pay is up, the economy is booming are utterly meaningless if that is not the lived experience of most voters.

With the tax rises that will soon kick in and massive increase in fuel costs those trotting out these apparently positive stats will look more and more daft.

Blossomtoes · 02/02/2022 13:43

I’m toying with the idea of emailing my “wait for Sue Gray” MP again. Surely he must be wondering what the impact of all this will be on his majority, huge though it is?

Notonthestairs · 02/02/2022 13:47

JUST IN: Boris Johnson has been warned that more Tory MPs will put in letters of no confidence unless he retracts his claim that Sir Keir Starmer failed to prosecute Jimmy Savile when he was director of public prosecutions

What are they waiting for? He's dragging the lot of them down with him.

Notonthestairs · 02/02/2022 13:47

Sorry - that quote was lifted from The Times Twitter account.

DuncinToffee · 02/02/2022 13:59

Let's wait and see if Simon Hoare hands in his letter after tweeting this earlier

FWIW: 1) the Sue Gray report must be published in full; 2) likewise any Met report; 3) if fines are issued we should know; 4) the Jimmy Saville false allegation should be withdrawn.

Blossomtoes · 02/02/2022 14:12

If this isn’t a wake up, what will be?

I was thinking this the other day. It must be that he appeals because we can see ourselves in him 😕

Another Tory MP handing in his letter. Is the House of Cards about to topple?

UnconditionalSurrender · 02/02/2022 14:59

Mind you we say that nearly every third post. Its fucking painful watching Tory MPS looking for their spines.

DuncinToffee · 02/02/2022 15:02

There could be another one according to Nicholas Watt (assuming Mangnal is one of them)

A Conservative MP submitting a no confidence letter this afternoon to Sir Graham Brady tells me that will be one of two this afternoon. Both MPs due to go public
