All day today I've had a pain under my big toe, right on the ball, but tonight the pain is excruciating, I can't bend my toe fully and have to hop to get around. Its really swollen and horrendous to touch? Does anyone know if its possible to break a bone Here?? I've never felt pain like it
I've added a photo to show the swelling

No idea I'm afraid, gave you tried ringing the non emergency number for advice? In the meantime could you try putting a frozen peas or sonethibg to reduce swelling.

ImprobablePuffin · 30/01/2022 03:23

No advice but I'd ring the non emergency number as PP said.

KitchenTowel · 30/01/2022 03:24

Yes I think you can break a bone there. It does look horribly swollen. I'd consider going to a n a. Hope someone will come along soon who knows more and hope you'll feel better soon.

Mammaof · 30/01/2022 03:26

I've tried the frozen peas, I've been spraying my foot with freeze spray the last hour, but have 2 small children otherwise would definitely be in a&e Sad it doesn't look like gout does it?? That's what keeps coming up when I google x

Could be gout. It's difficult to tell from the photo though. Go to A&E or a walk in centre in the morning.

Freeze spray will do bugger all to help whatever is wrong with it.

whataballbag · 30/01/2022 03:30

Yes! Also in agony with an ear infection.

Try a hot water bottle on it for now but could be something like gout. Would expect to see more bruising with a broken bone.

Hope you get some relief soon!

Mammaof · 30/01/2022 03:32

I thought I was young to have gout I'm only 26 Sad

OP posts:
irene9 · 30/01/2022 03:36

You can get gout if you are prone to it I think.
Have you got ibuprofen. That might help.

whataballbag · 30/01/2022 03:37

Rarer in younger people but not impossible.

Being awake in pain is the bloody worst I really feel for you. Especially when there's nothing you can do because of young children Sad

Namaste6 · 30/01/2022 03:37

Not a medical professional but a quick Google search suggests a break, gout or sesamoiditis. Did you hurt it today or has it just appeared? As others have suggested it's probably worth a call to the general NHS line. Hope you feel better soon.

Mammaof · 30/01/2022 03:47

It started yesterday after I had done 18,000 steps but has made me limp today but tonight the pain is worse than ever 😢 😢 I'm counting down the hours until I'm able to be seen x

OP posts:
Mammaof · 30/01/2022 03:48

I haven't phoned nhs direct as I think they will tell me to be seen and I can't be seen Sad

That looks so painful. Is there another adult in the house?

Marveladdict · 30/01/2022 03:52

If you haven’t injured it today or in the past couple of days I reckon 111 would be better than A&E - unless pain is so unbearable that regular paracetamol ibuprofen or over the counter co-codamol doesn’t help - pharmacy can advise re: pain relief options for you - there are some pharmacies open in big supermarkets or I think 111 can issue emergency prescriptions for stronger pain relief if over the counter analgesics don’t work - elevation and ice too 👍🏻

OP posts:
Mammaof · 30/01/2022 04:00

I'm resting it in bed now and the pain isn't as intense, but if I even attempt to lift my big toe it starts absolutely throbbing again

Call 111!

Justilou1 · 30/01/2022 04:02

Does it feel hot to touch? It does sound like gout. Do you have a history of kidney problems in your family?

BooseysMom · 30/01/2022 04:02

@Bravenheart..Well that was unnecessary Hmm

Good luck op. Hope you get it sorted soon
x

Mammaof · 30/01/2022 04:03

In that case I would take a trip as soon as you are able to to either a minor injury unit/urgent treatment centre (if you have one near you?) or A&E - but I would keep up with regular pain relief if you are able to take things like paracetamol or ibuprofen evenly spaced out - sometimes people do like paracetamol at 06:00 ibuprofen at 08:00, paracetamol at 12:00 ibuprofen at 14:00, paracetamol at 18:00, ibuprofen at 20:00 - then you have a constant level of painkiller in your system - sorry if I am teaching you to suck eggs xx
