All day today I've had a pain under my big toe, right on the ball, but tonight the pain is excruciating, I can't bend my toe fully and have to hop to get around. Its really swollen and horrendous to touch? Does anyone know if its possible to break a bone Here?? I've never felt pain like it
I've added a photo to show the swelling

@Justilou1 no doesn't feel hot to touch, now I'm not moving it the pain isn't as intense but the second I try and lift my big toe its agony again. Does gout ease with rest? X

@Marveladdict thank you so much for your kind advice. I've taken ibuprofen but definitely going to take some paracetamol now aswell, even tho I'm an adult I always get confused with what medication can be taken with what xx

@Mammaof

It started yesterday after I had done 18,000 steps but has made me limp today but tonight the pain is worse than ever 😢 😢 I'm counting down the hours until I'm able to be seen x
Could be something to do with a tendon. Strain of tendon or bursa maybe?

If you're not going to get it looked at until tomorrow can you get some effective pain relief, you can get co-codamol 12/500 from a pharmacy, there should be one open 24hrs in your town, they take it in turns. You can take this with ibuprofen too or you might be better with something like Voltarol Gel (diclofenac) to put on it . Something to help swelling go down like aloe vera gel would be useful. Arnica cream can help with bruising to help stop it in its tracks and stop the bruise happening any more than it already has, which will reduce pain over the next few days.

Marveladdict · 30/01/2022 04:09

No worries xx just read about not being able to drive - you can always call 111 now - no harm in doing that but it may well be hours before a clinician calls you back anyway as they are under so much pressure - you may find by the time they do call you back you will have found someone to help you get to a minor injury unit - or the pain/swelling might have eased xxx

Mammaof · 30/01/2022 04:10

@WildPoinsettia I don't drive so all that walking is usual for me. Thank you I wish I could get to pharmacy but got 2 small children and I don't drive and jts absolutely pouring down here 😢

Take ibuprofen and paracetamol together so you can try to get some sleep, after 4 hours take ibuprofen, then 2 hours later paracetamol, then 2 hours later ibuprofen.

Ibuprofen and oaracetamol can be taken together or spaced throughout the day as long as you keep four hours between doses of the same medications with no more then four doses taken in 24 hours

Paracetamol and cocodamol can NOT be taken together, however you can take cocodamol and then 4 hours later paracetamol, as cocodamol contains paracetamol.

Be cautious with ibuprofen if you asthmatic.

Hope this helps

WildPoinsettia · 30/01/2022 04:12

Because you said you're clueless: Co codamol is codeine with paracetamol, so if you take this don't take plain paracetamol too or it's an overdose. You can't buy separate codeine without a prescription.

@Mammaof Gout doesn’t ease with rest. It’s an inflammatory response to buildup of uric acid crystallisation in the joints (usually starting in the big toe/toes) and it’s like arthritis. It’s onset can be very sudden and usually at night. You might find anti-inflammatories help (ibuprofen or even better would be Diclofenac - but neither on an empty stomach.). Obviously, I’m not a doctor and can’t diagnose this. You need to see a GP because if this is Gout, it won’t go away. It will get worse. If it is Gout your GP will prescribe anti inflammatories and a change in diet (especially no/low alcohol). There are other meds as well for acute attacks, but again, that’s for you and the GP. Hope you feel better! X

It's a mind field especially to someone who hasn't needed pain relief really before apart from for a headache. Thank you all so much for your advice, it seems to have eased slightly now I'm resting, although I hope I don't move my toe in my sleep which is I think what happened when I was woken with the pain x

Mammaof · 30/01/2022 04:16

@Justilou1 thank you, the pain has seemed to have eased now I've been resting it, but I just hope I don't move my big toe in my sleep which is what I'm assuming I did earlier. X

Not gonna be any help at all but just wanted to say it's possible to break a bone anywhere there is a bone to break!!

Mammaof · 30/01/2022 04:18

@DropYourSword sorry I probably worded it wrong, I just meant more of a stress fracture as I haven't done anything to break a bone there 😅

Marveladdict · 30/01/2022 04:20

I hope it eases and you get it seen to soon - let us know how it goes/you get on xx

BigUpAllOfUshereOnMN · 30/01/2022 04:21

Hope the inflammation settles. Maybe rest with foot raised slightly. Hope you are able to go to hospital tomorrow to get it checked or ride it out until GP on Monday.

Namaste6 · 30/01/2022 04:43

Hi again OP. A few mentions of gout here but I think that the 18,000 steps you did today could have inflamed the joint. Also the swelling is under your toe and not to the side and top (which would be more indicative of gout crystals). A poster has just mentioned metatarsal pain. That's another possibility.

This. And unfortunately, you are not too young to have gout as it runs in families.

Considering your age and how suddenly the pain and inflammation has developed, you really need medical advice.

3luckystars · 30/01/2022 05:13

Good luck in the morning, hope you manage to get some sleep.

That looks so painful, you poor thing! So stressful having little ones when you can’t move about freely and need to see a doctor. And horrible being kept awake with pain. Hope you can get it sorted out today.
