What statement does a nose piercing make?

HermioneGranger999 · 28/01/2022 13:07

At 26, after wanting it for years and never having the guts, I have just had my nose pierced with a very small, thin silver hoop. I really love it!

But asked DH for his honest opinion and he says he isn't keen. It just got me thinking what kind of statement a nose piercing makes? As in what assumptions would you make about someone with a nose piercing/what kind of look it goes with?

You can be honest, it won't upset me!

@Dita73

I’d think “bit rough and has/wants a tattoo on their arse”
That says a lot more about you than someone with a nose ring.
AllThingsServeTheBeam · 29/01/2022 00:08

@DiddyHeck

It doesn't make any statement at 26. At 40+ I'd say possible 'midlife crisis' statement if any at all but even then, why not?
So I have to take mine out in 8 years then? Even though it's been there for over half my life?
Ohdofuckofdear · 29/01/2022 00:11

I think it looks lovely,my DD18 has one and it really suits her and I bet yours looks gorgeous on you!

My DH isn't keen on them either but he is used to our DDs now and now openly admits that it does suit our daughter.

No, you can do what you want obviously? Why would you think otherwise? Confused

Strictlyfanoftenyears · 29/01/2022 00:35

I like the studs in the nose, but hate the rings (always think of bulls with rings in their noses)

Strictlyfanoftenyears · 29/01/2022 00:38

i also look at it as an age thing too, if the person were say in their 20s I would think it ok, but 30 plus I would think they were trying too hard to be hip and cool (not saying that is right but OP wanted opinions)

Strictlyfanoftenyears · 29/01/2022 00:40

To be fair OP wanted opinions, if posters dont agree with others there's no need to have a go.........

Dita73 · 29/01/2022 00:47

@AllThingsServeTheBeam you’re probably right but I can’t say that concerns me

SocksAndTheCity · 29/01/2022 00:49

@OnlyAFleshWound

"I have had my nose pierced."
That's exactly what mine says! Amazing Grin

I'm 49 and first had mine done when I was about seventeen; I had three at one point but eventually got bored and took them out. I had another done (septum, so not onesided) last year and I like it far more than the 'side' ones.

If other people don't like them, they don't have to have one, do they?

sst1234 · 29/01/2022 01:01

All these people saying it makes no statement are doing the cool act and swerving OP’s question or pretending not to understand OP asked. It does make a statement, whether we like it or not, everything about you appearance leaves you open to perceptions or biases. It’s how humans a wired, they don’t work on a machine learning algorithm. It will cause people to draw all the assumptions described upthread.

To stop people thinking I'm having a mid life crisis. Very odd

Yeah but it's perfectly ok for people to disagree with you're incorrect opinions

Tacky.

TedMullins · 29/01/2022 01:29

It doesn’t make any statement. Nose rings are very ubiquitous now so I wouldn’t even notice someone having one at any age. Having said that I’ve got several tattoos, a nose ring and a septum ring and I’m nearly 33. I’ve managed to have a professional career for years though, despite apparently being tacky, rough, and having ‘mum’ tattooed across my arse cheek (feel the need to state I don’t actually have that!)

Yellownotblue · 29/01/2022 01:37

If you are Indian, it says you are traditional.

If you are not, it says you like piercings.

I was a partner in a law firm for a decade, and a lawyer for another decade before that, and I never saw anyone with a nose piercing. It’s not really done in conservative professional circles.

No, I'm not 'doing an act'. I'm an intelligent, capable woman who is almost fifty years old, and I have no interest at all in the opinions of people who make judgements about strangers because of what they may or may not be wearing, or how they look generally.

This is in part because my location/job/lifestyle means I don't tend to encounter judgemental people or those with very narrow views of the world, so if that means I exist in something of an echo chamber then that's possibly fair. If it is, then I'm very thankful that I do Smile.

If it doesn’t look apart of your cultural heritage The statement is -
“My upbringing was a bit bogan”

ajs8 · 29/01/2022 02:05

26 is young!! Express yourself. Nose piercings are nothing much anymore. I’m a 38 year old teacher with piercings and tattoos and nobody judges me. Individuality is the most amazing thing, otherwise we’d all be the same, and that would be boring as hell!

pompomseverywhere · 29/01/2022 02:48

Sorry to jump on your thread.

I love a nose ring but can never get on with them. Is anyone here on this thread able to recommend one or is it just me that can only wear a stud?

To answer your question OP I think it shows the person is a little bit alternative but nothing major.

Under 30 - naff
Over 30 - too try hard
Over 40 - sad

Not keen on the pig ring though

Or finally realising that other peoples opinions don’t mean anything and you should do as you like and what makes you happy? What is mid-life crisis about a nose piercing??
TheOriginalEmu · 29/01/2022 05:27

@Esspee

I would assume that you also have tattoos and no qualifications so probably work in a cafe, call centre or car wash.
I have many many tattoos. But I work as a specialist SaLT. Crazy I know.
