What statement does a nose piercing make?

HermioneGranger999 · 28/01/2022 13:07

At 26, after wanting it for years and never having the guts, I have just had my nose pierced with a very small, thin silver hoop. I really love it!

But asked DH for his honest opinion and he says he isn't keen. It just got me thinking what kind of statement a nose piercing makes? As in what assumptions would you make about someone with a nose piercing/what kind of look it goes with?

You can be honest, it won't upset me!

@ComtesseDeSpair i would be utterly shocked if those people had the tattoos and piercings while working at Magic Circle firms. Maybe they felt that they could be freer spirits post law firm?

Stookeen · 28/01/2022 17:40

I personally find piercings quite unpleasant to look at and just don’t get why anyone would want to make a deliberate hole in a body part and stick a metal object through it ......

Maybe ask the Queen if she's just trying to be a bit of a rock chick with her ear piercings. The hussy.

Skeumorph · 28/01/2022 17:44

Honestly I don’t think it says any more than a pair of earrings does. Just another piece of jewellery. The ‘youth of today’ who got their noses pierced because they were rebellious student types are in their 40-50s now and loads of them still have them. It isn’t an alternative thing at all.

nannybeach · 28/01/2022 17:45

DD had her nosed pierced at 16, didn't see anything wrong. I have Indian friends with nose piercing, quite normal. DD now had tongue,lip,hips, naval,took me a while to get used to it,but I am over 70had my ears pierced at 18 when it was considered quite daring. Most ratings then we're clip on,but they hurt.

Rockbird · 28/01/2022 17:45

I'm 50, got mine done at 25 and it says nothing other than I've got my nose pierced. I've never failed an interview or had any issues. If people want to judge me they can get knotted.

AllTheColoursOfGerberas · 28/01/2022 17:50

Um...it doesn't really
I've had a silver hoop for 10 plus years, took it out for a couple of weeks and everyone asked where it was
I had it done for me, because I always wanted my nose pierced wasn't bothered about what anyone else thought...well apart from my MiL she was horrified
I was secretly ecstatic.

MenopauseSucks · 28/01/2022 17:50

It says 'I like having my nose pierced'!
I had my nose pierced when I was 18 (over 30 years ago). I thought a thin ring would look nice but I actually look better with a stud.
It's still pierced now - most people don't notice if I'm honest!

LaurieFairyCake · 28/01/2022 17:58

That you're a 'whooo-er'

According to my Scottish granny

See also: any piercing - even ears, eating in the street, going out with hair not your natural colour, shaving your legs, not wearing a hat, not wearing tights, driving, buying a drink yourself in the pub, drinking pints, not carrying an umbrella (it implied you would go into anyones house to keep dry Grin)

I'll stop there but there was HUNDREDS Grin

@Esspee

I would assume that you also have tattoos and no qualifications so probably work in a cafe, call centre or car wash.
🤣🤣🤣
AllTheColoursOfGerberas · 28/01/2022 18:02

@TheVanguardSix

I think they're so beautiful. I'd love to get a nose piercing but I don't know, at 50... who knows? I love piercings in general.
Do ittttttt I'm nearly 56 and have a nose ring
FrazzledMCPremenopausalWoman · 28/01/2022 18:02

@MistressoftheDarkSide

As the widow, since Tuesday, of a body piercer of 30 years standing, I think I'm qualified to say that nose piercings, or any other piercings or tattoos are a form of self expression that are nobody's business but their own.

Rock them if you want them / have them. [Flowers]

In this bland, corporate divided and petty world, as my DH would say, be proud to "wave your freak flag" ......

So sorry for your loss Thanks
fallfallfall · 28/01/2022 18:04

to me it says confused and unhappy.
of course this doesn't apply to cultural piercings.

gorseinon28 · 28/01/2022 18:06

I don't feel it makes a statement at all. I don't like the look of them, but again, not keen on nipple piercings either.

Vbree · 28/01/2022 18:08

I had mine done at 25, still wearing it 12 years on. Usually a small titanium stud, at the moment a tiny cubic zirconia one. It feels like part of me. I'm definitely not edgy looking, far from it and it's not something you would notice at all.

BiscuitLover3678 · 28/01/2022 18:08

I haven’t read the comments. My personal judgment that everyone I’ve met with a nose piercing has been slightly quirky and really, really nice!

This made me chuckle Smile

@drpet49

Personally I don’t like any facial piercings apart from ears
I wouldn't even have my ears pierced ....although on other people earrings look fine. I hate looking at facial piercings and tattoos as well - I can't understand why anyone would want them.

Confused Cultural piercing? what and why?
AllThingsServeTheBeam · 28/01/2022 18:10

@Wendybyrdesmissingconscience

Try too hard.
Very odd thing to say. What do you actually mean? I honestly don't understand it. I was 13 when I had mine done and just kept it in. I wasn't trying to do anything.
unicornpower · 28/01/2022 18:13

I like them!! I don’t think they make any particular statement? I’d have one but I don’t want to draw attention to my nose. If you want it done then go for it!!

maddy68 · 28/01/2022 18:14

I think it depends on the type. They can look beautiful. They can also look chavy

Helpel · 28/01/2022 18:20

White British with a hoop nose piercing? I just think it's a bit hippyish. Showing my age but back to the nineties a hoop nose piercings went with doc martens floaty skirts and wavy loose hair. Maybe the odd joint whilst listening to smashing pumpkins. I doubt this is the statement it makes now Grin

StripedMousse · 28/01/2022 18:21

Always look like drops of mucous to me.

You've just described me. Though I don't smoke weed. 🙈
