What statement does a nose piercing make?

HermioneGranger999 · 28/01/2022 13:07

At 26, after wanting it for years and never having the guts, I have just had my nose pierced with a very small, thin silver hoop. I really love it!

But asked DH for his honest opinion and he says he isn't keen. It just got me thinking what kind of statement a nose piercing makes? As in what assumptions would you make about someone with a nose piercing/what kind of look it goes with?

You can be honest, it won't upset me!

@LondonQueen

They used to be edgy and cool, but now they just scream chav.
Do you not feel embarrassed?
PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 29/01/2022 17:20

If it's something like an aquamarine or an amethyst I might assume you were a bit arty, but I think that's often in combination with the clothes you have on.

Otherwise I would probably notice it but not think much of it past the fact you have your nose pierced.

The only one I didn't like much was somebody who had a darkish red, not very sparkly ruby — it looked like a scab!

You do realise that's a classist slur, right?

Using the word chav to describe someone with a nose piercing. It's extremely cringe. In fact using the word chav at all.

Well, this They used to be edgy and cool, but now they just scream chav for a start.

They really don't.

Right. I am giving my opinion on the responses..or is that not allowed?

Why have they not always 'screamed chav' though?

Opinions. Not insults.

skybluee · 29/01/2022 18:11

I don't like them. I find it interesting about the responses not liking them invokes. So not only do we have assumptions about people who have nose piercings, we have assumptions about people who don't like nose piercings.

What do people think about microdermals?

This is maybe what I'd think regarding nose piercings:

  • less likely to be judgemental
  • more likely to be politically liberal as opposed to Conservative.

For example if I saw a doctor who had a nose piercing, I'd think that they were less likely to be judgemental about mental health issues or old fashioned in their approach like some of the old fossils. But is this judgemental of me?

As an aside, I hate the words:

  • bogan
  • chav
  • rough.

I have no issue with people who don't like the look of them, I don't like when people say "chav" and other rude stuff.
LadyOfTheFlowers · 29/01/2022 19:06

Mine was done at 15, I'm 38 now. It doesn't cross my mind to be honest

narcdad · 29/01/2022 19:07

I think yuk but would say "oh looks nice"

Nah. People not liking something, fair enough. Not everyone is the same. It's the pathetic insults and judgements.
AndSoFinally · 29/01/2022 19:23

I had mine done 25-odd years ago, followed by several other piercings and large tattoos. At the time it was a bit "edgy" or alternative, but all of us who did it back then are now middle aged, so I think it's just become mainstream. None of my kids see it as "cool". Nothing can be cool if your mum's doing it!

And I'm a hospital consultant and clinical Director for our trust, no one bats an eyelid. That's how mainstream it is now.

YukoandHiro · 29/01/2022 19:29

Good for you! I loved mine but took it out at about 25 as I had to keep removing it for work and got fed up. I'm 40 this year. I really miss it!

Newnormal99 · 29/01/2022 19:40

I'm just about to turn 50 and just got my eyebrow done. I used to have a double nose piercing about 30 years ago!

Spongeboob · 29/01/2022 20:59

Does it need to have a statement? I've got 40 odd visible piercings. I like them, which is why I got them done. Couldn't give a fuck what other peoples opinions are on them.

Bouledeneige · 29/01/2022 22:25

My DD 21 has a nose piercing. I don't even notice it. I don't think it says anything more than having your ears pierced.

Exactly, classic mumsnet censorship. You can only give a positive opinion or you get jumped on.
AllThingsServeTheBeam · 29/01/2022 23:45

@LondonQueen nope. Wrong again (don't you get bored?) Only people who are being offensive are being jumped on. People who say they don't like them aren't. HTH

Changemaname1 · 30/01/2022 00:08

It says you like nose piercings . I love mine and would feel weird without it after all these years . I will never take it out NEVER 😅
