To think he shouldn’t be charged with murder

Story in the news today. A man is stabbing a woman to death in the street, people try and intervene and he’s waving a big knife about. A passing motorist rams him with a car and kills him. The driver has now been charged with murder. I get that people can’t take the law into his own hands but for all he knew it was a mad man/terrorist who might be about to start killing others. Never mind trying to save the life of the poor woman who died. Surely he can argue he didn’t have an intention to kill the man, but was just hoping to stop him.

Exactly this.

If someone is stabbing another person . You can kill them in defense of the victim. As long it can be justified.

It's right that the police should investigate to verify that it was self defense and no crime. For example, if the attack was over, the murderer was either disarmed or running away and no longer threatening anyone, and a vigilante kills them as a form of revenge/instant "justice" then that is a crime. That wasn't the case in this situation but some cases where an attacker or thief were killed have been found to be disproportionate and were criminal culpable killings because the death didn't prevent any other kind of harm.
