To think Adele’s been shockingly unprofessional?

Adele was due to start a Las Vegas residency at Caesar’s Palace this weekend and cancelled the entire thing less than 24 hours ahead of time, saying they weren’t ready for a number of different reasons.

FIL had bought tickets to the opening night for himself and MIL as a 40th wedding anniversary present, they had pretty much just checked into their hotel when she announced it wasn’t going ahead, and the cost of that and their flights is now money down the drain. DH and I and BIL and SIL were planning on taking them away for a family weekend at Easter but have instead offered to pay for travel and accommodation when (if?) it gets rescheduled.

I get that covid is fucking a lot of things up for a lot of people, but surely they could have faced reality a bit sooner? Even one more day’s notice would have saved so many people taking flights and checking into hotel rooms that they could have rebooked or been refunded for.

YANBU, a less than perfect show is surly better than no show at all.

Whelmed · 22/01/2022 08:34

Yanbu, how is it possible that they didn't realise sooner that it's not ready yet? Short notice cancellation would be expected if it was for an emergency reason, or change in covid rules or a personal/family emergency. But to say they weren't ready yet is just not great.

MiloAndEddie · 22/01/2022 08:35

I agree, I’m pretty astounded that it (allegedly) took until only 24 hours before to realise they wouldn’t be ready.

imoutofhere · 22/01/2022 08:35

I thought she said that a lot of her team have Covid!

Horst · 22/01/2022 08:36

I wonder if she wasn’t allowed to let people know any earlier due to exactly what you’ve said.

Sapphire387 · 22/01/2022 08:36

It's not the first time she has cancelled shows, I remember her cancelling in 2017 (ish?) too. Definitely should have given more notice this time.

Badnightguaranteed · 22/01/2022 08:37

It seems strange. Apparently blind gossip pages had been hinting at this happening for ages.
Surely Vegas is full of musicians and stage staff who could step in? And presumably there were contingency staffing plans for a show of this size.

DoctorSnortles · 22/01/2022 08:37

YANBU...and I know it's not the most important thing but is anyone else transfixed by her scary bear claws in that footage? Terrifying!

MarshmallowFondant · 22/01/2022 08:38

She's a talented singer/songwriter.

Shockingly unprofessional "businesswoman". If I'd shelled out £££ on her tickets I would be raging. Her excuses were basically "We were poorly prepared, badly organised and fucked up".

Not good enough.

Bananarama21 · 22/01/2022 08:38

There's plenty of other shows to go see and do out there and see Adele. It can't be helped at the moment.

NuffSaidSam · 22/01/2022 08:38

YANBU

She needs to offer to cover people's travel costs imo. It's absolutely outrageous.

AlphabetStew · 22/01/2022 08:38

OMG I didn't realise it was cancelled at such short notice! That is awful. Is there any way of getting some of the costs back? Adele(s insurance) really should be helping out massively here.

MoiraNotRuby · 22/01/2022 08:40

I really do feel for her. We have all had those times when work is far too much to handle.

But I also really feel for people like your ILs who have wasted loads of money and annual leave and won't be compensated.

MarshmallowFondant · 22/01/2022 08:40

@Sapphire387

It's not the first time she has cancelled shows, I remember her cancelling in 2017 (ish?) too. Definitely should have given more notice this time.
Yes that's right, she cancelled gigs at Wembley. Friends had travelled to London from Scotland for the concert and paid a lot of cash for travel and accommodation.

AlternativePerspective · 22/01/2022 08:40

I can’t be doing with all these tearful announcements where someone cries and apologises and yada yada yada. Just a load of show to garner sympathy.

BliainNua · 22/01/2022 08:40

While I agree it was a shit thing for Adele to do, I don't think it's money down the drain for your in-laws. They're in a hotel in Las Vegas! Lots of things to do and enjoy there.

MarshmallowFondant · 22/01/2022 08:41

Oh and when she cancelled her 2017 Wembley gigs she was "heartbroken" and "devastated" about that too.

PandoraP · 22/01/2022 08:41

I would be relieved if I was going to an Adee concert and it was cancelled 😂

Discwriter · 22/01/2022 08:41

YANBU, they must have known on Monday, last week, last month, that the show isn't ready. And why 'postpone' (frustratingly not cancel) the entire residency, surely you can pull something together with another week.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 22/01/2022 08:41

Whilst I appreciate it's a shot thing to happen I don't think comparing it to cancellations in 2017 help.

After all that's when she found out that she had damaged her vocal chords, needed surgery and might never sing again!

draramallama · 22/01/2022 08:42

I agree. She said they hadn't been able to complete preparations therefore she obviously knew more than 24 hours in advance.

Posting a video of yourself crying isn't a get out of jail free card for crap behaviour, and makes the whole thing even worse to me.

It would be different if it was something that had only occurred last minute like illness or injury. Simply failing to complete preparations and failing to make a decision early enough to protect customers from losing huge sums of money is pathetic. Then following it up with a performative sob video to make it all about you is manipulative.

VashtaNerada · 22/01/2022 08:42

I agree. I was thinking she could offer people a choice of rebooking for the full show or coming anyway and doing an ‘evening with Adele’ type thing where she chats, sings with minimal backup etc. For a fan that might even be more special! I can’t imagine paying all that money to go all the way to Vegas for that to happen.

AlternativePerspective · 22/01/2022 08:42

I really do feel for her. We have all had those times when work is far too much to handle. oh my heart bleeds. She hasn’t been on tour for years and years now, and when she does she can’t handle it. Maybe there’s something to be said for all that and she’s not cut out to be a professional musician. Talent isn’t everything.

SirChenjins · 22/01/2022 08:43

I thought it wasn’t ready because so many of the crew were ill with covid? Unfortunately these things are very likely to happen during a pandemic, I guess it’s a risk you take sadly - but yes, Adele should have given more notice. Would your parents have got a refund if she’d given 48 hours notice though?

AlternativePerspective · 22/01/2022 08:43

Apparently Harry Styles has done similar. Has cancelled an entire tour and told his fans they can have priority tickets for the replacement one. Except that instead of 8 tour dates there are now only 3.
