wont pay for damage to my jeans

I actually needed new pants, so I bought 3 new pairs of mostly otton jeans that were the same on sale from a warehouse getting rid of old stock. The jeans are all one shade of blue so any marks would be obvious. I could've got cheaper jeans but I thought I'd treat myself. They no longer have the jeans in my size but are selling them or something similar on the original website for a similar amount.

Dog of a relative unexpectedly jumped up on me and scratched as soon as I got in the door. I didn't expect them to because last times I've come in they've not done that and I've gone in loads of times. I've had these jeans 2 days. The jeans haven't been torn but are damaged. You'd have to look at them to see the scratches. other marks they've made I'm not sure if it'd come out in the wash. This has effected the aesthetic of the jeans and they don't feel as special. They haven't had holes ripped in them so relative is refusing to replace them

It depends if the £19 you paid for them is worth more than the relationship with your MIL because if you ask her for money, I can almost guarantee that will be the relationship over.

My brother has a dog who jumps up in excitement to greet people so I have had many a scratched item of clothing but I would never dream of asking him for money!

I didn't think Bench was a particularly high end brand to be that bothered. There are lots of places online that sell cheap Bench clothing but it sounds like you have 2 other new pairs anyway?

BedisBliss · 21/01/2022 14:06

@Mamamamasaurus

"they don't feel as special"

You poor lamb. Here you go: Biscuit

Fuck me, just when I thought I'd heard it all 🤦🏻‍♀️

my thoughts too!
BrinksmansEntry · 21/01/2022 14:06

But you've got two other pairs as well? That's 3 pairs of unzipped jeans.

I don't think you have any leg to stand on tbh. No rip, just a mark. You could have caught them on anything else, it really sounds insane that you want a new pair of jeans at full price from your MIL.

Years ago my MILs cat sat on my legs and managed to dig a claw in to my skirt. No rip, tiny pull. Its what happens with animals sometimes. I could have pushed it off before she got settled. Much like you could have put a hand out to stop the dog getting to your leg.

Went walking, got mud on my wellies. Should I sue the weather?

CraftyGin · 21/01/2022 14:08

Don't risk the inheritance, OP.

Personally, I would look down on the jeans and think that is where DDog showed me love Grin .

CraftyGin · 21/01/2022 14:09

Due to the nature of the material colour migration could occur.

Perspective, perspective

VelvetChairGirl · 21/01/2022 14:10

Bench is designer? yay I've been wearing a designer coat for years.....

didnt you say you was gonna post a picture of the the damage?

EmmaH2022 · 21/01/2022 14:10

@HRMtheQuern

Well I thought it was nice to get otherwise expensive jeans on a sale that have now been damaged that I don't want to pay to get full price because someone elses dog damaged mine
I see what you mean.

If they look fine after a wash, then leave it.

but if there's actual damage, of course the dog owner should pay, but I can see why they would give you the actual cost rather than the cost of replacing it.

I'm trying to think what I would do.... If I could, I would give the cost for you to buy another pair because I'd consider it my fault the dog did that. And it's not your fault the sale price is no longer around.

godmum56 · 21/01/2022 14:11

blimey what makes them worth 60 quid???

user1471600850 · 21/01/2022 14:12

am I missing something here? The Op has 3 pairs so surely she now just has 2 "good" pairs and one that is slightly different but not damaged?

UsernameInTheTown · 21/01/2022 14:12

Where do pants come into it?

GrapefruitPink · 21/01/2022 14:13

Where did you buy them from??

Less than £20 on M&M direct

wont pay for damage to my jeans
GrapefruitPink · 21/01/2022 14:14

I'm so thick sorry, just seen you bought 3 pair and from same places 😂

WorriedGiraffe · 21/01/2022 14:14

YABU, m&m direct sell everything that way and those jeans are still available on there for the price you paid! Unbelievably cheeky wanting your MIL to buy you full price ones, or any at all, considering it doesn’t sound like yours are even damaged.

Heronwatcher · 21/01/2022 14:15

Have you seriously asked her to pay the full amount? And you haven’t even checked what the “damage” was after the wash, but you know that there wasn’t a hole? Good grief. I can’t work out whether this is a joke? Even in court the most you’d get would be the price you paid but this was £20, and you have 2 other pairs!!! I really feel sorry for your MIL. And your DP. And the dog.

girlmom21 · 21/01/2022 14:16

@godmum56

blimey what makes them worth 60 quid???
Nothing. If they were worth £60 someone would've paid £60 for them.

As it is, it's the brand name that's making OP believe they're worth that much.

PomegranateRose · 21/01/2022 14:16

You had prior knowledge of a dog in the house and decided to wear a new item of clothing you considered precious to that house. The relatively foreseeable consequences of that are on you. YABU.

TheOccupier · 21/01/2022 14:17

You are NBU and are quite right, although personally I would never visit a home with a badly trained dog (or any dog come to that).

Alcemeg · 21/01/2022 14:18

The thing is, with jeans, people pay good money for that "distressed" look.

Sunshineandflipflops · 21/01/2022 14:19

"you saved xxxx amount" is always a con. M&M sell everything cheap and like places such as TK Maxx, I think they make up the RRP so you feel you are getting a bargain.

Hardly anywhere else sells Bench jeans now as I don't think they are a particularly popular brand these days so not sure where else you'd buy a new pair from.

inappropriateraspberry · 21/01/2022 14:20

OP, M&M are not a warehouse clearance shop, just cheap clothes! You've paid what they are worth and as skinny jeans won't be made of proper denim fabric. You have to expect they won't last too long at that price, similar to supermarket brands as others have said.

RedHelenB · 21/01/2022 14:20

@HRMtheQuern

Right, the next person to post a passive aggresive patronising comment will be reported. Because it's largely the reason why I can't enjoy using mumsnet quite so much. I've only ever had cheap jeans not nice ones out of a sale so this was meant to be special for me but thanks a lot.
Yabu and very precious. Jeans by their very nature should withstand a dog jumping up at you as I'm sure you'll find out when you get them out the wash.
BedisBliss · 21/01/2022 14:20

@Scrabblecrabapple

Did you twit twoo in her face?
I have never laughed so much in a long time, and I have been here for years. Please this has to go into Classics!
NativityDreaming · 21/01/2022 14:21

There is 0 chance I would compensate someone for a mark to their jeans if my (fictional) dog jump on them! How ridiculous! I suggest you don’t visit your MIL anymore.
