wont pay for damage to my jeans

I actually needed new pants, so I bought 3 new pairs of mostly otton jeans that were the same on sale from a warehouse getting rid of old stock. The jeans are all one shade of blue so any marks would be obvious. I could've got cheaper jeans but I thought I'd treat myself. They no longer have the jeans in my size but are selling them or something similar on the original website for a similar amount.

Dog of a relative unexpectedly jumped up on me and scratched as soon as I got in the door. I didn't expect them to because last times I've come in they've not done that and I've gone in loads of times. I've had these jeans 2 days. The jeans haven't been torn but are damaged. You'd have to look at them to see the scratches. other marks they've made I'm not sure if it'd come out in the wash. This has effected the aesthetic of the jeans and they don't feel as special. They haven't had holes ripped in them so relative is refusing to replace them

@ahcmonnow

I can't cope. They don't feel as special???? Give them to the dog!
That’s an interesting question. Much the same as where does a centaur’s willie hang, which has puzzled me for years.

Many of the dogs around our way seem to have been given form fitting onesies for Christmas, they look cute, there was one in a fluorescent orange number the other day, you would never lose that dog in the undergrowth.

Journeynotdestination · 21/01/2022 13:51

This would piss me off no end. If the marks don’t come out I’m not sure how you can get the money from the dog owner though, but I’d be seething.

ahcmonnow · 21/01/2022 13:52

@DropYourSword I Love it!

KirstenBlest · 21/01/2022 13:53

Do they do neon onsies for cats? DCat is too easily camouflaged

KatherineJaneway · 21/01/2022 13:53

@DropYourSword

Now Googled OTTO jeans. Where have these delights been hiding all my life!!
Could do with some dog scratches TBH

This cracked me up.

Did you twit twoo in her face?

Itloggedmeoutagain · 21/01/2022 13:54

Jeans from a warehouse... Special?
Are jeans not jeans?
Are they not meant to be hard wearing?
Makes me wonder if they're worth the price if they're ruined by one dog jumping up

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 21/01/2022 13:54

Guranteed there are superficial scrtaches that come out in the wash.

I didnt realise you were asking your MIL to give you the full price. If I was your MIL and being very generous, id perhaps give you £20 considering what you paid for them. Theres no way id pay £50odd knowing you didnt pay that. YABVU for that expectation.

TheVolturi · 21/01/2022 13:55

You've got another 2 pairs though? So that people don't think that you never change your pants 🙄 why not customise the damaged pair, mess them up a bit more, they might look better.

Right, the next person to post a passive aggresive patronising comment will be reported. Because it's largely the reason why I can't enjoy using mumsnet quite so much. I've only ever had cheap jeans not nice ones out of a sale so this was meant to be special for me but thanks a lot.

Haha

Hankunamatata · 21/01/2022 13:56

Hang on you paid £56 for 3 pairs and now you want mil to pay £60 off for one pair. Sorry I think yabu.

BelleNoir · 21/01/2022 13:56

Haha the famous owl noises
Popopopo · 21/01/2022 13:57

It's as much your fault as ot is hers. It's her dog, but you went into her house knowing dog was there. Offering to give you the amount you actually paid would be generous in my opinion.

Get over yourself

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 21/01/2022 13:57

I forgot to say, I’ve worn jeans for years when doing doggo stuff (and cheapo leggings) and with the exception of my ripped jeans in which a toenail can easily get caught in & rip a little further, I’ve never had a pair of jeans ruined my a dog. Denim was designed as hard wearing work wear & is pretty bomb proof.

On the rare occasion a pet has become entangled with my ripped skinny jeans (I know, I’m a fashion dinosaur) I’m more concerned about making sure the pet’s foot isn’t damaged.

I know that designer jeans can be cotton & a Lycra mix (so denim style not denim denim) so I could see damage occurring on a pair like this which is made for fashion, not the doings of everyday life.

Maybe that is the case here?

LuckySantangelo35 · 21/01/2022 13:58

I wouldn’t expect to have to think about what clothing to visit someone in case their dog jumped up, do people really just wear old clothes they care don’t care about every time they visit someone who has a dog just in case it jumps up?!

mrsm43s · 21/01/2022 14:00

@HRMtheQuern

I haven't read all responses but surely the people who've had dogs jump up on them had clipped nails? Because MIL's dog has sharp, unclipped nails.

To clarify, the jeans haven't been ripped, just marked. In my OP, I meant 'mostly cotton jeans'. And I'm feeling a bit crap now they're 'bench' brand. I payed £56.97 for 3 pairs and saved £123 because I bought them on sale. Usually I'd go for supermarket brand

Then what you are "owed" if you choose to pursue it, is the difference in value between an £18.99 when new pair of jeans that is used and unmarked and an £18.99 when new pair of jeans that is used and slightly marked.

So a couple of quid if anything.

Not a brand new £60 pair of jeans.

TheVolturi · 21/01/2022 14:01

Bench jeans aren't expensive jeans op. You can get them for less than £20 from m&m etc all the time. They usually say rrp £60 + but it's made up I think.

The second picture is clearly the only correct answer!

Less clear is how a giraffe would wear a bow tie...[/quote]
😂😂😂

Youcunnyfunt · 21/01/2022 14:03

YANBU

Absolutely hate dogs jumping up. So antisocial.

A new friend's dog damaged my favourite shorts last summer and I didn't say anything because it was a new friendship, but it did piss me off. It's really difficult to find shorts that fit, and these now have permanent marks. I live with it because I can't be arsed with the aggro of finding new ones.
Such a pain in the arse! MIL should be training her dog.

Flipflopblowout · 21/01/2022 14:03

Jeans = dungarees

SweetPetrichor · 21/01/2022 14:05

So these are supermarket priced jeans...just let it go. Live and learn. The mark is probably not even visible after a wash and any jeans that are truly marked by a dog's claws are not fit for purpose!

YABU. It’s irritating but not the end of the world and too trivial a matter to damage a family relationship by pursuing financial compensation. It is just a minor misfortune in the grand scheme of things.
