wont pay for damage to my jeans

HRMtheQuern · 21/01/2022 12:36

I actually needed new pants, so I bought 3 new pairs of mostly otton jeans that were the same on sale from a warehouse getting rid of old stock. The jeans are all one shade of blue so any marks would be obvious. I could've got cheaper jeans but I thought I'd treat myself. They no longer have the jeans in my size but are selling them or something similar on the original website for a similar amount.

Dog of a relative unexpectedly jumped up on me and scratched as soon as I got in the door. I didn't expect them to because last times I've come in they've not done that and I've gone in loads of times. I've had these jeans 2 days. The jeans haven't been torn but are damaged. You'd have to look at them to see the scratches. other marks they've made I'm not sure if it'd come out in the wash. This has effected the aesthetic of the jeans and they don't feel as special. They haven't had holes ripped in them so relative is refusing to replace them

The OP could save them for those t-rexing in Sainsbury moments when you don't want to wear your best clothes.

gsaoej · 21/01/2022 13:37

Chalk this up to experience op

I do think it is a bit off letting a dog jump on visitors if claws are sharp enough to mark clothes/clothes are going to get dirty.

Not sure why everyone has been so rude to you.

Knittedfairies · 21/01/2022 13:38

Could the jeans you bought have been seconds OP?

Rumplestrumpet · 21/01/2022 13:38

I'm confused - Why are people being so unnecessarily rude to the OP? You wouldn't speak to people like that in real life...

OP, I understand that you're disappointed, and you weren't in the wrong for wearing nice jeans to someone's house knowing they have a dog (ridiculous comment above). But I think you should avoid causing a rift with MIL over this. It's not a one-off piece, yes it may feel less special now but they can be your "special every day" jeans and save the other pairs. Don't let it ruin your day or your relationship with the in-laws.

iklboo · 21/01/2022 13:39

Right, the next person to post a passive aggresive patronising comment will be reported.

This is AIBU, not Hugz4Huns. Replies can be robust. Disagreeing with you or saying you're out of order isn't against MN rules.

willithappen · 21/01/2022 13:40

Are you sure they are legit jeans? Dog jumping up once and ripping like that suggests maybe not the best quality?

Either way I wouldn't be asking someone to pay. You run that risk anytime you wear and I probably wouldn't wear 'good' jeans for a trip round someone's with a dog

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 21/01/2022 13:40

As a dog owner, I’d offer to pay for any damage to be repaired or replaced. It’s just the kindest thing to do.

On the flip side though, if I’m going to a home with a dog in it (or any pet) I don’t wear my expensive posh stuff as animals can be arses.

Any animal can exhibit unusual, unpredictable behaviour. One of mine spins around in the air when my twin sis comes round, even if for every other visitor he’ll get a toy & sit to present his ‘gift’ to them. I had a Yorkie who’d pretend to have an epileptic fit when my best mate would come round. Only to him, he ignored everyone else! Thousands on scans, neuro consults, blood tests to be told he was being a drama queen!

I’ve lost too many pairs of tights and cheapo leggings & tights to a jumping creature, be it cats (the killers of many a 100 denier pair), dogs, even a Guinea pig who had a nibble on my t-shirt as it sat on my lap. I usually say, if my host offers to replace the damaged item, not to worry about it; it’s just what some animals do sometimes (as I said, all animals can be arses).

If they don’t offer to replace the jeans, or refuse to offer, or can’t afford to buy a pair at full purchase price, then I’d suck it up for the sake of family peace, as gutting as it is to have something you treasure being damaged.
@Soontobe60 she put it the washer with her husband and brothers clothes, which were all greasy dirty dark clothes ( car mechanic clothes)
I still can’t understand why should mix white clothes with dark ..
I can't understand why you wouldn't be taking responsibility for washing your own clothes.

If I was your MIL I'd replace your £80 Diesel shirt once you'd settled the £100 invoice I'd sent you for laundry services.

ahcmonnow · 21/01/2022 13:41

I can't cope. They don't feel as special???? Give them to the dog!

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 21/01/2022 13:41

I understand the feeling - I always feel the same about new shoes. They are new and perfect and you want them to stay that way, so you really notice when they get marked in the first few wears.

It's normal for that to happen though. The scratches and stains and scuffs do occur. Clothes don't need replacing when they get a mark on them.

Look at all your other clothes - they will all show signs of wear.

OrangeShark27 · 21/01/2022 13:42

Because this is mumsnet @Rumplestrumpet where people act like its cool to be as cutting as possible, like children playing up to the queen bee in the playground

Honestly I get why OP is upset. Someone elses do ruining your brand new jeans you'd bought as a treat for yourself is upsetting, and people's dogs jumping up on you are generally really fucking irritating, and can easily damage clothes.

I think expecting her to pay for full price brand new jeans is too much though. Unfortunately this is one of those things, and I'd be careful what I sore to MILs in future

HRMtheQuern · 21/01/2022 13:44

I haven't read all responses but surely the people who've had dogs jump up on them had clipped nails? Because MIL's dog has sharp, unclipped nails.

To clarify, the jeans haven't been ripped, just marked. In my OP, I meant 'mostly cotton jeans'. And I'm feeling a bit crap now they're 'bench' brand. I payed £56.97 for 3 pairs and saved £123 because I bought them on sale. Usually I'd go for supermarket brand

@ahcmonnow

The second picture is clearly the only correct answer!

Less clear is how a giraffe would wear a bow tie...

wont pay for damage to my jeans
Getyourjinglebellsinarow · 21/01/2022 13:46

How much were the jeans in the first place?

With things like this I imagine they're damaged in the shop and I'm asking for a discount "Hi these are the only ones you have in my size but they have marks on, is it possible to get a price reduction?" And thinking about what they'd offer and I'd accept. Usually its 10% the shop wouldn't give you the jeans free for that level of damage so she shouldn't buy you a whole new pair, unless you can never wear them again. So say they cost you 50 quid, which is expensive luxury jeans by my standards, she owes you a fiver, and I wouldn't fall out with family over a fiver.

viques · 21/01/2022 13:46

The last three people wearing jeans I have seen walking down my street must have been attacked by extremely large and hungry grizzly bears because their jeans were in shreds.

Momicrone · 21/01/2022 13:47

So you have 2 other pairs that are OK?

User1isnotavailable · 21/01/2022 13:47

Dog people would say their little fur babies couchie coo darling is just being friendly so soak up the damage. I wish dog owners would train their animals/babies not to leap up at people. I love well behaved dogs.

Reasonable people would pay for damage. That does mean damage though. If it is barely noticeable though and comes out in the wash I wouldn't bother.

DropYourSword · 21/01/2022 13:47

I used to love Bench cargo pants @HRMtheQuern - seriously disappointed they don't do the style I loved anymore.

User1isnotavailable · 21/01/2022 13:49

@HRMtheQuern

Ignore the unpleasant ones. It's MN and some go about being mean to OP's. Of course you are allowed to hope the things you buy are not damaged by other's unruly pets. Just don't mention on MN. Ignore the put downs, they have something lacking.

girlmom21 · 21/01/2022 13:50

So you paid less than £20 and want MIL to replace them with a £60 pair because your jeans are scratched?
WonderfulYou · 21/01/2022 13:50

Honestly just stop.
Clothes get damaged. This is not your MIL’s fault.

There’s a reason they were so much cheaper and it’s probably because they mark easily.

Take it up as experience and next time don’t get that brand.

Fairylightsongs · 21/01/2022 13:51

Wow that’s a really good deal, nineteen quid a pair?

Hopefully they come out the wash ok op.

Tdcp · 21/01/2022 13:51

I wore a really nice dress and tights (I'm usually in leggings and a hoody) to my friend's house and her toddler attacked me with a sword thing and stuck a hole in both. It didn't occur to me to ask her to replace them ... I know she has kids, you know your friend has a dog. Nice clothes are a risk in such circumstances.

trickytimes · 21/01/2022 13:51

Legally you don’t stand a chance and right is not on your side. You have no claim. You know a dog lives there so you have prior experience. You went there willingly and you could have chosen to wear old clothing but you didn’t. You entered the dogs home. You are being unreasonable and need to stop

WonderfulYou · 21/01/2022 13:51

They were £18.99 each - around the price of supermarket jeans.
