wont pay for damage to my jeans

I actually needed new pants, so I bought 3 new pairs of mostly otton jeans that were the same on sale from a warehouse getting rid of old stock. The jeans are all one shade of blue so any marks would be obvious. I could've got cheaper jeans but I thought I'd treat myself. They no longer have the jeans in my size but are selling them or something similar on the original website for a similar amount.

Dog of a relative unexpectedly jumped up on me and scratched as soon as I got in the door. I didn't expect them to because last times I've come in they've not done that and I've gone in loads of times. I've had these jeans 2 days. The jeans haven't been torn but are damaged. You'd have to look at them to see the scratches. other marks they've made I'm not sure if it'd come out in the wash. This has effected the aesthetic of the jeans and they don't feel as special. They haven't had holes ripped in them so relative is refusing to replace them

@getsanta

I don't get these replies? Why shouldn't the dog owner pay for damage? I would.
Because it doesn’t sound like there is any real damage, just a few marks that will come out in the wash!

If the scratch marks are still there when they come out if the wash you have three choices.

  1. Buy some Dylon in the closest blue and dye them in the washing machine.
  2. Scratch the opposite leg so the marks match.
  3. Show MiL that the marks haven't come out and get her to buy you another pair and claim on her contents insurance.
GreekGod · 22/01/2022 18:23

I couldn't ask my MIL to pay for my jeans if her dog damaged them - it would mean I would be starting unnecessary issues with her. This kind of reaction/response can cause horrible problems in relationships.

Feelf4you · 22/01/2022 18:28

Your basically asking your mother to cough up in a horrible way.... Also Grin incase just a genuine recommendation lol the black blue grey jeans are really nice from pep&co they keep the stretch are jeggings style but like so clingy (stay away from the tan and khaki ) I think they were£7 but I love em and nice with long tops I wear them to work so there durable with messy kids and crawling all over the floor with them too. You might want to try them ( and get £3 change!)

ginghamstarfish · 22/01/2022 18:30

The point here is that twattish dog owners should not allow their animals to jump up at others. If this was a usual thing - I wouldn't be continuing to go round there myself if it was - then you should go only in clothes you don't mind being ruined. Wankers.

Feelf4you · 22/01/2022 18:32

@Cariadm

Your question is unbelievably precious and self obsessed but in these days of the shallow, 'me me me' perhaps I really shouldn't be surprised?! Perhaps you need to consider the real problems that half the population of the world live with on a daily basis, FFS!!! You need to get things into perspective, it's a pair of cut price JEANS, you have 2 more pairs, it was an accident, your relative was probably very sorry but she didn't do it on purpose did she? Last Sunday during a visit my two little grandchildren (4 and 7) were playing very roughly and aggressively in the garden with our 12 year old great-grandson who lives with us, they managed to rip both pockets of his Adidas hoodie which he had bought himself, he didn't tell us till after they left and I was obviously very cross but, I didn't immediately get on the phone to my granddaughter demanding that she buy him a new hoodie! When I see her next I will tell her about it and ask her to have a quiet word with her boys and ask her to tell them that Louie was very upset which hopefully will make them stop and think next time they're playing, BUT no way do I think it worth falling out over or making a big fuss about...you need to step back and consider if a pair of jeans is the most important thing in your life and if the answer to that is yes then I feel sorry for you?!
I couldn't agree more! Even a 12 year had more sense! Well raised! Thoughtful and considerate they don't make like that more sadly!
Wonderwall80 · 22/01/2022 18:32

Bit necessarily damaged. She hasn’t even washed them to find out it the scratches become invisible or virtually invisible yet. Wow! Go to any house with a dog/cat/child/food in £3 Primark jeans - if you want to wear child labour prodicts!

Dontwanttolivewithmylover · 22/01/2022 18:33

I'd have been really annoyed too as one if my daughter's has 2 Dalmatians and they're REALLY HEAVY dogs and jump right up on me which I hate, so she puts them in another room until they calm down.
I was glad to read that the marks are barely visible and that's down to them being lighter blue jeans. Now you can enjoy your weekend, have a drink, watch your fav TV programmes and chill. 💐

I've not sat through this whole thread for 2 days to end up with no photo of the jeans.
Op don't less us down Grin

Dorosomethingbeautiful · 22/01/2022 18:43

Why are some people on Mumsnet so mean? The Op can be precious about her jeans if she wants to, she has explained she usually buys supermarket brands but she got these more expensive ones at a discounted price and the jeans are no longer available in her size. I will be upset too Op

Blinkingheckythump · 22/01/2022 18:46

This is madness! How precious do you want to be? Fwiw I wore brand new jeans and someone's cat jumped on my lap and clicked my jeans pulling a thread on them permanently. I'm not at all rich, but I would never have even considered asking them to replace my jeans. Jesus. Your poor mil

But would you expect your MIL to buy a replacement 3x the original price? That's what people have an issue with.

They are not more expensive ones though, they are £18.99. I’ve paid more than that for supermarket jeans.
wont pay for damage to my jeans
WTAFhappened123 · 22/01/2022 18:54

Of course they should replace them! I can’t believe the amount of people on here that think it’s ok?!

Not read the full thread have you.
fetchacloth · 22/01/2022 18:57

Many of my friends have dogs and when I visit them I make sure I wear clothing where it doesn't matter if the dog jumps on me on arrival.
This is normal behaviour for a dog when meeting someone. I certainly wouldn't be wearing anything new or delicate.😐

DavetheCat2001 · 22/01/2022 18:59

@HRMtheQuern

All these people making assumptions based on one snippet of my life? We're not poor, we just don't buy branded clothes When you don't spend money, you have money If you have a tenner, and you only spend £3 of that, you've got £7 of that left. But the person who spends all £10 has 0. They're special to me because for once I got a deal without having to spend loads more than I usually would I was just disappointed that something I bought new could've been damaged. I had said in my OP I'm not sure if it'd come out in the wash. I think you'd at the very least complain to yourself too if something you bought new was marked in not much time. Maybe complain to a partner or friend as well. As suspected the jeans came out fine with a bit of white thread showing through. I didn't expect this to blow up
I didn't expect this to blow up

I think you did..

Jo586 · 22/01/2022 19:03

Personally can't stand dogs so I would never have one, but if I did and it damaged something, of course I would offer to replace it. YANBU
