wont pay for damage to my jeans

I actually needed new pants, so I bought 3 new pairs of mostly otton jeans that were the same on sale from a warehouse getting rid of old stock. The jeans are all one shade of blue so any marks would be obvious. I could've got cheaper jeans but I thought I'd treat myself. They no longer have the jeans in my size but are selling them or something similar on the original website for a similar amount.

Dog of a relative unexpectedly jumped up on me and scratched as soon as I got in the door. I didn't expect them to because last times I've come in they've not done that and I've gone in loads of times. I've had these jeans 2 days. The jeans haven't been torn but are damaged. You'd have to look at them to see the scratches. other marks they've made I'm not sure if it'd come out in the wash. This has effected the aesthetic of the jeans and they don't feel as special. They haven't had holes ripped in them so relative is refusing to replace them

@HRMtheQuern

I haven't read all responses but surely the people who've had dogs jump up on them had clipped nails? Because MIL's dog has sharp, unclipped nails.

To clarify, the jeans haven't been ripped, just marked. In my OP, I meant 'mostly cotton jeans'. And I'm feeling a bit crap now they're 'bench' brand. I payed £56.97 for 3 pairs and saved £123 because I bought them on sale. Usually I'd go for supermarket brand

This is really sad. You must have no value to life and living if you really expect your mil to pay you for this.
What a shame, I’ll be horrified for my son if his wife/ partner did this

denisehr · 22/01/2022 17:52

I mean lololol 🤣 this is prb the most dilly post I have read in a while.

Get over yourself. You go to the dogs house, so if they had a baby and puked on you, you will expect them to pay you too? You need a hobbie and a big reality check with the world.

Nanof8 · 22/01/2022 17:52

You have 2 other pairs of jeans to wear for the aesthetic. Continue to wear the "damaged" pair to your MILs house. My guess is that washing will remove the marks. I just can't imagine asking a family member to replace a piece of clothing that isn't actually damaged beyond repair.

MissM2912 · 22/01/2022 17:53

It only blew up as you behaved like a nutter 🙈

DiddyHeck · 22/01/2022 17:54

@Hrpuffnstuff1

I'd put a charge on their property.
🤣🤣🤣
CambsAlways · 22/01/2022 17:55

I wouldn’t actually expect my mil to pay anything, due to the fact dogs do jump up and possibly mark jeans, but bench jeans should be able to withstand a dog jumping up, now cats scratching totally different,

HereLiveIAmNotACat · 22/01/2022 17:55

Wow

Maureen53 · 22/01/2022 17:56

Totally agree

Lennybenny · 22/01/2022 17:56

Bench aren't a good or designer brand and are usually always heavily discounted. Bit like Sports Direct selling things cheaper than rrp but they never sell the them at rrp.
They're 1 pair of jeans that aren't even ruined. I wouldn't pay for them either.

whatmagicword · 22/01/2022 17:56

I had a horrible dream that some crazy woman started a thread about a pair of cheap jeans that a dog may have damaged but didn't really and that a wicked MIL refused to pay for the non damage. thank goodness I woke up!

Maureen53 · 22/01/2022 17:57

Definitely

Is this for real? If it is, it sounds like you do not want to have a good relationship with your in laws and that you know the cost of everything and the value of nothing. I'm sorry to be harsh, but there are far more important things in life to be worried about than a few marks on your new jeans, however caused.

Zipper666 · 22/01/2022 18:02

@VelvetChairGirl

I think you are being unreasonable for 2 reasons.

1 you chose to buy expensive jeans when jeans are all the bloody same and things like Levis last the same amount of time as TU from Sainsbury.

2 you choose to go round someones house while wearing them that you knew had a dog.

I would think differently if it was you was walking down the street friend walked past dog jumped up or stranger, but your post sounds like you went round their house or allowed them in yours thus there was an element of forward planning and risk assessment with a known situation i.e a dog would be there.

Ms Velvet - I have to agree.

Singingalone · 22/01/2022 18:06

You know that song that Elsa from Frozen sings? Sing it to yourself and let it go. Next time you visit the relatives with dogs, don’t wear new jeans. Write it off as an unpleasant experience and move on.

Charpick · 22/01/2022 18:06

I have a dog and would definitely pay if she damaged someone else’s property. I’d probably rather give the cash value though if it was discount jeans and not expect people to visit my house in clothes they were precious about.

Bagamoyo1 · 22/01/2022 18:08

If you need new pants why did you buy jeans? Or are you buying the pants another time?

Whingewhingewine · 22/01/2022 18:08

Who buys three identical pairs of jeans? And why can't you wear one of the other pairs? This is the most first world problem to have ever existed.

Oh, and yes, you're being unreasonable and a bit unhinged.

Whingewhingewine · 22/01/2022 18:11

@Everycloud10

I am so very disappointed that I have trawled through 24 pages of this thread and no photo of post wash jeans has been added.
Thank god I saw this before I wasted my life in a similar fashion
Mumwithbaggage · 22/01/2022 18:14

Loving the word dilly to describe the thread!

Firelilly67 · 22/01/2022 18:14

Presumably you could have dodged or pushed the dog away? It’s a dog, they jump. You’re mush more responsible than your mil for that damage.

I shudder to think of anyone putting “Jean aesthetics” above family relationships. Yikes

SandyPanda · 22/01/2022 18:15

Glad they're okay and thank you for the thread. Was a good one!
