wont pay for damage to my jeans

I actually needed new pants, so I bought 3 new pairs of mostly otton jeans that were the same on sale from a warehouse getting rid of old stock. The jeans are all one shade of blue so any marks would be obvious. I could've got cheaper jeans but I thought I'd treat myself. They no longer have the jeans in my size but are selling them or something similar on the original website for a similar amount.

Dog of a relative unexpectedly jumped up on me and scratched as soon as I got in the door. I didn't expect them to because last times I've come in they've not done that and I've gone in loads of times. I've had these jeans 2 days. The jeans haven't been torn but are damaged. You'd have to look at them to see the scratches. other marks they've made I'm not sure if it'd come out in the wash. This has effected the aesthetic of the jeans and they don't feel as special. They haven't had holes ripped in them so relative is refusing to replace them

What breed of dog was it?
If it was a Labrador your being unreasonable;
if it’s a french bulldog you should take the jeans back to the shop;
if it was a boxer you should send them back to the manufacturer;
if it was a Jack Russell you should refuse to go round to your MIL again;
If it was a cockerpoo your MIL should only come to yours in future;
If it was a collie you should buy it a sheep to focus on so you can run away

Mirw · 22/01/2022 17:33

If the marks are not noticeable, why would you MIL be expected to buy you a new pair... I think you are being a bit diva-ish and should move on. What I mean is get a life...

Nailsbythesea · 22/01/2022 17:34

Where is the picture of the actual marks on your jeans?

It’s a bummer if your jeans got scratched but it’d seem really really petty to ask your relative to pay for new ones. If someone asked me to psy in these circumstances, I may give them the money but I would never see them or want any to do with them. That would be the end of my relationship with them. Luckily I don’t have a family or friends who would ask.

I was having a cup of tea, years ago in a department store one someone accidently split a cup of coffee over my white cotton coat. They said it would come out in the wash but it didn't! The person was a complete stranger so there was no where I could contact them to get him to cough up for a new coat.

Repecka · 22/01/2022 17:40

The quality of the jeans must have been appalling…especially the dye.

Adirondacks123 · 22/01/2022 17:41

YABU - why should the owner of the dog pay for these jeans? you knew you were going in to where there was a dog, and you know that dogs can jump up. Would you want compensation if you at in a bench in the park and got marks or splinters in your jeans?

Mumofthreeteenagers · 22/01/2022 17:41

Pants? Ffs. This is the uk right???

BABAHOTEL · 22/01/2022 17:41

No they were bench, so because they have a massive price tag, then reduced they must be better than supermarket jeans! Not!
Headinthecloudsfeetinthemud · 22/01/2022 17:42

You can afford to buy 3 pairs of jeans, which you chose above the cheaper ones because you wanted to treat yourself.
Learn a lesson from this - buy the cheap jeans to wear every day and only wear the precious ones for v v special occasions - if you’re going to be pathetic. Shit happens - suck it up.

@HRMtheQuern

All these people making assumptions based on one snippet of my life? We're not poor, we just don't buy branded clothes When you don't spend money, you have money If you have a tenner, and you only spend £3 of that, you've got £7 of that left. But the person who spends all £10 has 0. They're special to me because for once I got a deal without having to spend loads more than I usually would I was just disappointed that something I bought new could've been damaged. I had said in my OP I'm not sure if it'd come out in the wash. I think you'd at the very least complain to yourself too if something you bought new was marked in not much time. Maybe complain to a partner or friend as well. As suspected the jeans came out fine with a bit of white thread showing through. I didn't expect this to blow up
Yes of course people might have a quiet moan afterwards. But you went one step further and asked her to replace them! You say yourself it was completely unexpected because the dog has not done it before though you've been there many times.

So it's not as though MIL could have predicted it would happen. I cannot even imagine asking a family member to replace a pair of jeans because of a scratch mark on one of three identical garments I bought.

It's just so.....mean? Or miserly?

anon666 · 22/01/2022 17:45

You hate your Mil, you are just angry about the dog and the jeans. All possibly fair, we don't have enough details.

But expecting someone to pay a fortune because your clothes got a tiny bit damaged by their dog. YABU. It would be different if the dog had eaten them altogether.

They're still wearable. They're not that special in the first place. They're jeans.

I think you're being precious because you're resentful of your Mil

BuntyCollocks · 22/01/2022 17:45

You’re fucking nuts.

Feelf4you · 22/01/2022 17:46

Sorry this made me chuckle!!!

JimJam8414 · 22/01/2022 17:47

@RealBecca

I think you're getting a bit of an unfair pasting OP. Why should you expect and plan around someone else's bloody dog. It shouldn't have been jumping up on you as you walked in. If its that excitable she should close the hallway or shut dog in kitchen when answering.

No i dont think you can ask for the full cost new and I think you'll have to write it off as an unfortunate thing. But I'd be pretty fucking cross of treated myself, spending more than normal and then it being ruined through no fault of my own. Id probably avoid going round or having the dog over again.

It’s the dog’s home, they live there. If she has such a huge problem with a dog jumping up (which the huge majority of dogs do when people they know visit), then she shouldn’t go to their house. If people don’t like my animals, that’s their issue. I’m not forcing them to come into our home, and I’m certainly not locking my animals away in a different room for them.
Lizziespring · 22/01/2022 17:47

Relative is Mil?! And you expect her to pay for your warehouse bargain jeans because her dog greeted you enthusiastically when you went to her house? Probably best not to be unreasonably demanding towards your partner's mother, (or to her dog), because she's likely to be in your life for a looong time....

But either contact warehouse try your luck otherwise I guess it's simply though luck how can you even ask your mil to replace them common!!! You could of easily fallen over scuffed them. Things happen way of life have a heart! She didn't set the dog on you!!

Hrpuffnstuff1 · 22/01/2022 17:48

I'd put a charge on their property.

Everycloud10 · 22/01/2022 17:49

I am so very disappointed that I have trawled through 24 pages of this thread and no photo of post wash jeans has been added.

Cantfindafreeusername · 22/01/2022 17:49

But you have another 2 pairs which you can wear and assuming that have not been mauled by a passing savage are still aesthetically pleasing so perhaps just put them on and use the others as everyday Jeans now….. although rip jeans are very trendy!

The 'If you don't spend money you have money' is a bit at odds with buying three pairs of jeans at the same time! You'd be better off buying fewer good quality items of clothing. I wear jeans everyday, mostly the same pair, I couldn't understand buying three pairs the same like they were t-shirts.
