wont pay for damage to my jeans

I actually needed new pants, so I bought 3 new pairs of mostly otton jeans that were the same on sale from a warehouse getting rid of old stock. The jeans are all one shade of blue so any marks would be obvious. I could've got cheaper jeans but I thought I'd treat myself. They no longer have the jeans in my size but are selling them or something similar on the original website for a similar amount.

Dog of a relative unexpectedly jumped up on me and scratched as soon as I got in the door. I didn't expect them to because last times I've come in they've not done that and I've gone in loads of times. I've had these jeans 2 days. The jeans haven't been torn but are damaged. You'd have to look at them to see the scratches. other marks they've made I'm not sure if it'd come out in the wash. This has effected the aesthetic of the jeans and they don't feel as special. They haven't had holes ripped in them so relative is refusing to replace them

I’d return the jeans - they are JEANS not a silk pant suit. Surely they can cope with a dog’s nails….

getsanta · 22/01/2022 09:42

For me the issue is that, as the MIL, l would absolutely offer to replace the jeans as would, I'm sure, my lovely mother in law. As the DIL, I would never ask for the money though.

"This has effected the aesthetic of the jeans and they don't feel as special."

That is probably the most ridiculous sentence I've ever read on MN. And god knows, there's been a few corkers.

I was thinking, if that's how OP expressed herself to MiL, I'm not surprised she got told to FO.
100problems · 22/01/2022 12:27

@Notarealmum I took mine straight home, took the legs of even the skinniest in until ,when I wore them, my legs tingled.

AppleJane · 22/01/2022 12:35

Presumably the OP has washed and dried her jeans by now and realised she's acted hastily. Wonder how she's going to apologise to her MIL. Hope it was all worth causing a fuss!

ThinWomansBrain · 22/01/2022 13:36

OP hasn't even told us if they're actually damaged yet. If he'd torn the leg off I'd agree.

The leg of the jeans?🤣🤣🤣

Her actual leg! Vicious attack that is was!
MumUndone · 22/01/2022 13:52

Lucky you've got two spare pairs

stripeyflowers · 22/01/2022 15:10

OP you really sound like spoiled, petulant little child.

Accidents and unexpected things happen all the time. stuff gets broken, clothes get damaged - that's life.

I don’t think she sounds like that at all, the opposite, I think she sounds like someone who doesn’t have or get much so cherishes what she has, even if it is just branded jeans.
HRMtheQuern · 22/01/2022 16:46

All these people making assumptions based on one snippet of my life?
We're not poor, we just don't buy branded clothes
When you don't spend money, you have money
If you have a tenner, and you only spend £3 of that, you've got £7 of that left. But the person who spends all £10 has 0.
They're special to me because for once I got a deal without having to spend loads more than I usually would
I was just disappointed that something I bought new could've been damaged. I had said in my OP I'm not sure if it'd come out in the wash. I think you'd at the very least complain to yourself too if something you bought new was marked in not much time. Maybe complain to a partner or friend as well.
As suspected the jeans came out fine with a bit of white thread showing through.
I didn't expect this to blow up

So are they damaged?

girlmom21 · 22/01/2022 16:55

Oh sorry missed the end of your post.

Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 22/01/2022 16:56

You might well complain to a partner but you wanted your mil to but you new jeans!!!

A bit of white thread.....Confused

Are you apologising to MIL for your massive over reaction?

Hopefully she'll accept it graciously.

So you're going to apologise then?
GrapefruitPink · 22/01/2022 17:18

All of this and they are fine 😅

Carriecakes80 · 22/01/2022 17:24

Do people ACTUALLY act like this?? Is this real?? Why, for the love of all that is good n holy would anyone want to cause upset over a genuine accident, especially within the family, and a small mark over massively discounted jeans? My nephew drew on my wedding dress, it was one of those things, I wasn't going to sue his mother for it, life happens, get over it.

Mumof3girlygirls · 22/01/2022 17:26

This has got to be a joke?? 🤣 come on!

My nephew cut my sisters wedding shoes ;(bride) on her wedding day! Oh no hang on it wasn't him, it was a burglar that stole nothing at all, but just cut her shoes!

We're still laughing 35 years on!

CloR86 · 22/01/2022 17:28

These things happen. They didn't do anything on purpose and I can't imagine charging a relative for anything!

whatmagicword · 22/01/2022 17:28

Jesus what a bloody world we live in !

If the dog doesn’t normally jump up it’s not really MIL’s fault. It’s just a dog being a dog -an accident and you’re only going to cause bad feeling in the family if you pursue this
