wont pay for damage to my jeans

I actually needed new pants, so I bought 3 new pairs of mostly otton jeans that were the same on sale from a warehouse getting rid of old stock. The jeans are all one shade of blue so any marks would be obvious. I could've got cheaper jeans but I thought I'd treat myself. They no longer have the jeans in my size but are selling them or something similar on the original website for a similar amount.

Dog of a relative unexpectedly jumped up on me and scratched as soon as I got in the door. I didn't expect them to because last times I've come in they've not done that and I've gone in loads of times. I've had these jeans 2 days. The jeans haven't been torn but are damaged. You'd have to look at them to see the scratches. other marks they've made I'm not sure if it'd come out in the wash. This has effected the aesthetic of the jeans and they don't feel as special. They haven't had holes ripped in them so relative is refusing to replace them

@AuntMargo

Expensive jeans from MM Direct !. You sound an absolute nightmare.
Stop it. It's mean. So I'm told, upthread. Snowflakes are out in force on MN tonight!

YABVU.

IDidntKnowItWasAParty · 21/01/2022 18:48

In 1995 my flatmate's cat ran across my lap and shredded my new trousers - now I realise that I should have charged my flatmate for a replacement!

Also, my current cat keeps putting holes in my clothes, the last one destroyed 2 sofas, another peed on the lounge carpet so much that the carpet needed to be binned - who do I get compensation from?!

DontTellThemYourNamePike · 21/01/2022 18:48

I always wear clothes I don't care about when I visit my SIL because her two mutts jump up and claw at us, as she hasn't trained them at all properly. She laughs and half heartedly asks the dogs to stop jumping up. But of course they give zero fucks. And neither does SIL or she'd do something about it. One of them damaged a dress I was wearing last year, so lesson learned. The dogs will never be trained, so I have to work around it.

I think this calls for a "sad face" article in the Daily Mail.
Make sure that you hold up the jeans and look suitably bereft.

curlymom · 21/01/2022 18:51

What would you do if someone came over for dinner and accidentally broke a plate? Just asking

LunaTheCat · 21/01/2022 18:53

This is possibly the most precious behaviour thing I have ever heard - and that”s saying something!

Sam1111 · 21/01/2022 18:53

Unreasonable… dogs jump and get excited and over friendly.. it’s only a pair of Jeans…

Keke94LND · 21/01/2022 18:54

@ChardonnaysPetDragon you don't think it's mean to laugh at other peoples clothes?

StellaGibson118 · 21/01/2022 18:54

Im honestly in two minds on this one but I am finding it difficult to understand how the jeans are damaged but not torn. My dog jumps ups at me daily in jeans and he's never damaged them?

KurtWilde · 21/01/2022 19:18

Do we know what kind of dog it was yet?

nonevernotever · 21/01/2022 19:26

Off topic, but here's where giraffes wear their bowties according to Mervyn Peake.

wont pay for damage to my jeans
nonevernotever · 21/01/2022 19:26

Sorry that was for a poster upthread

LakieLady · 21/01/2022 19:29

Then how do you get new centaurs?

That's a very good question.

I've never seen a female centaur, only male ones. When I try and envisage a centaur with tits, it just looks silly.

Maybe they reproduce asexually, @SleepingStandingUp.

PaddleBoardingMomma · 21/01/2022 19:37

One time my MIL looked at my jumper with a snarky side eye and it hasn't felt special ever since. I feel your pain.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 21/01/2022 19:44
@ChardonnaysPetDragon you don't think it's mean to laugh at other peoples clothes?
It is wrong. v
Very enjoyable though. You might want to try something enjoyable, who knows, you might even manage a laugh.

SaritaBella · 21/01/2022 19:51

I assume you don't have children..
I'm not comparing dog to kids but what if that would of been your mates kid who dropped his food and it stained your jeans? Would you ask for compensation or you just hate your mil?

LidlMiddleLover · 21/01/2022 19:53

Oh dear what an excessive drama about a pair of jeans

AndSoFinally · 21/01/2022 19:59

If you forget all the rubbish about jeans and dogs, the underlying question is interesting. If someone damages your property, and let's assume they accept liability, do they owe you what you paid for the item or what the item is actually worth to replace?

What if you managed to get an ornament at a car boot sale for £1, that turned out to be an antique worth £200. If someone broke it, do they owe you £1 or £200? Would you expect them to buy you the same antique ornament, or could they replace it with some tat from B&M because it didn't cost you much?

SquirrelG · 21/01/2022 20:03

Relative is mil

That says it all!!

SquirrelG · 21/01/2022 20:04

This is possibly the most precious behaviour thing I have ever heard - and that”s saying something!

Yep, especially on MN.

PheonixGlitterRepublic · 21/01/2022 20:04

I would say in this case ops worn jeans would be replaced with a second hand pair

SC215 · 21/01/2022 20:06

I wouldn't fall out with my mother in law for the sake of £18.99.

You have two good pairs, just wear the marked pair when you go round hers.

I'm wondering if this is a reverse.

LakieLady · 21/01/2022 20:09

@JohnKettleyIsAWeatherMan

I know. I hope my kids don't bring an OP home. My dog likes to share his slobbery ball

And I'm sure every single one of your visitors simply loves that. Hmm

Out of interest, what do you do if someone visits who's allergic to dogs? (There are a lot of posters on this thread I'd like to ask that question tbh!!)

Give them an antihistamine.
AllThingsServeTheBeam · 21/01/2022 20:12

@LakieLady apparently that's not good enough. But the poster never come back to tell me what was good enough
