wont pay for damage to my jeans

I actually needed new pants, so I bought 3 new pairs of mostly otton jeans that were the same on sale from a warehouse getting rid of old stock. The jeans are all one shade of blue so any marks would be obvious. I could've got cheaper jeans but I thought I'd treat myself. They no longer have the jeans in my size but are selling them or something similar on the original website for a similar amount.

Dog of a relative unexpectedly jumped up on me and scratched as soon as I got in the door. I didn't expect them to because last times I've come in they've not done that and I've gone in loads of times. I've had these jeans 2 days. The jeans haven't been torn but are damaged. You'd have to look at them to see the scratches. other marks they've made I'm not sure if it'd come out in the wash. This has effected the aesthetic of the jeans and they don't feel as special. They haven't had holes ripped in them so relative is refusing to replace them

@Georgyporky

Dog owner could probably claim on Pet Insurance Policy.
Not the couldn't. Excess is normally 3 times the amount OP paid for the jeans.

And don't criticise the dog in case you hurt it's feelings. Smile even more at dog. It's Mumsnet. Dogs rule!

JohnKettleyIsAWeatherMan · 21/01/2022 17:53

My visitors all have dogs. Some bring them with them. The rest are my family and expect it. I don't know anyone allergic to dogs. If it was bad enough surely you just wouldn't go to someones house who has a dog?
My best friends husband is allergic to cats and just takes anti histamine before he comes and I have some in the cupboard.
Don't like pets? Don't go to a house with pets. Pretty simple.

Good grief. Good job you already have friends, because you're unlikely to make any more with this sort of attitude.

I am an animal lover and have four cats but I'd never expect people to pander to them in the ways people on this thread are suggesting they pander to their dogs. I've owned dogs too and I do realise they're very different from cats, but I never behaved this way towards visitors when I had dogs either. I have some dog-owning friends and they don't behave like this either. It all just sounds breathtakingly entitled.

Antihistamines aren't always effective BTW.

JedEye · 21/01/2022 17:54

If you still have 2 good pairs maybe wear those for special occasions.

JohnKettleyIsAWeatherMan · 21/01/2022 17:55

If someone who's allergic to dogs visits my house I'd expect them to take responsibility for their own allergies tbh...

And they probably would, but a decent host will try to help out with this too.

Please tell me what you'd like me to do differently? I don't live in a mansion. I aren't kicking all my pets outside. My dog is well behaved. He doesn't jump up or bother people he doesn't know. He gives his ball to people. If I say 'no more, bed' he gets on his bed. I aren't sure what attitude I have 😂
PheonixGlitterRepublic · 21/01/2022 18:03

Pet Insurance Policy.

Leaving aside whether they’re likely to be covered and the excess would be more than the jeans, insurance will only replace like for like. So it would reimburse OP the value of second hand jeans not brand new ones more than double what she paid for them anyway.

Honestly all this preciousness about a barely/probably not at all damaged pair of jeans of which OP has two identical pairs. The mind boggles.

Westerman · 21/01/2022 18:08

If I was the dog owner, I'd offer to give you what you paid for the jeans if they couldn't be directly replaced. You can't really expect a more expensive replacement!

SnickettyLemon · 21/01/2022 18:10

Were these 3 pairs of Jeans somehow psychically connected? Did the remaining 2 pairs mysteriously recieved equal damage to the pair that the dog supposedly ruined? You still have 2 pairs of perfect bargain jeans, it is not the end of the world.

DesdemonaDryEyes · 21/01/2022 18:12

If I was your MIL I’d give you what you paid for the jeans and request that you stay away from my dog.

MeredithGreyishblue · 21/01/2022 18:12

Out of interest, what do you do if someone visits who's allergic to dogs? (There are a lot of posters on this thread I'd like to ask that question tbh!!)

My visitors all know I have dogs. What do you want me to do? I can't make then unallergic to dogs. They have a choice not to come! Weird.

AuntMargo · 21/01/2022 18:16

Expensive jeans from MM Direct !. You sound an absolute nightmare.

AppleJane · 21/01/2022 18:20

@HRMtheQuern

Right, the next person to post a passive aggresive patronising comment will be reported. Because it's largely the reason why I can't enjoy using mumsnet quite so much. I've only ever had cheap jeans not nice ones out of a sale so this was meant to be special for me but thanks a lot.

I've been on MN years. Here, have my very first Biscuit

HairyScaryMonster · 21/01/2022 18:24

I empathise op, if this was your new car that got a minor but noticeable to you and others who look scratch from mil's dog, id be asking for money to get it mended. I guess the difference is you're asking for more than you paid.

With 3 the same I'd mark the label somehow and designate them the less dressy pair.

ReadySteadyTwins · 21/01/2022 18:25

You could probably get her for £1000 in pain and suffering as well.

Derbee · 21/01/2022 18:29

Sorry, YABU. Less than £19 a pair is not expensive. If you think that’s expensive for jeans, you wouldn’t have bought 3 pairs surely? If you think £19 jeans need special care and no risk of ever being touched by a dog etc maybe save them for special occasions and buy even cheaper (is that possible?) jeans for when you’re visiting someone with a dog?

I’m not surprised your MIL won’t replace them. But I hope it doesn’t make your relationship awkward that you asked her to!

Laiste · 21/01/2022 18:30

Sooooooooo -

picture of this 'damage' yet?

KatyRebecca84 · 21/01/2022 18:31

Get a life

MrsBaublesDylan · 21/01/2022 18:32

I'm sorry the jeans got damaged but I think it will cost you more in the long run to fall out with your MiL over money..

I think if you feel that the relationship with MiL is so worthless to you, then you really shouldn't visit at all. More stress than is worth it really.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 21/01/2022 18:33

The op is not coming back 😂
KatyRebecca84 · 21/01/2022 18:34

@HRMtheQuern

I haven't read all responses but surely the people who've had dogs jump up on them had clipped nails? Because MIL's dog has sharp, unclipped nails.

To clarify, the jeans haven't been ripped, just marked. In my OP, I meant 'mostly cotton jeans'. And I'm feeling a bit crap now they're 'bench' brand. I payed £56.97 for 3 pairs and saved £123 because I bought them on sale. Usually I'd go for supermarket brand

I feel like this has to be a joke! They were £20 each and they may have a little scratch on them?! Wow.. some people have far too much time on their hands!
Maireas · 21/01/2022 18:35

@PleasantBirthday

Relative is mil

Well of course she is. Who else would it be?

Grin
Blossomtoes · 21/01/2022 18:41
