wont pay for damage to my jeans

I actually needed new pants, so I bought 3 new pairs of mostly otton jeans that were the same on sale from a warehouse getting rid of old stock. The jeans are all one shade of blue so any marks would be obvious. I could've got cheaper jeans but I thought I'd treat myself. They no longer have the jeans in my size but are selling them or something similar on the original website for a similar amount.

Dog of a relative unexpectedly jumped up on me and scratched as soon as I got in the door. I didn't expect them to because last times I've come in they've not done that and I've gone in loads of times. I've had these jeans 2 days. The jeans haven't been torn but are damaged. You'd have to look at them to see the scratches. other marks they've made I'm not sure if it'd come out in the wash. This has effected the aesthetic of the jeans and they don't feel as special. They haven't had holes ripped in them so relative is refusing to replace them

@JohnKettleyIsAWeatherMan

Pretty simple. You're correct. Don't go round to houses with dogs if you're so dam precious!

Correct about what? That it's reasonable to expect people to wear old clothes around other people's dogs?!

Just wow.

I don't let my own dog or cat near me when I am dressed up. So yeah. Wow!
IncompleteSenten · 21/01/2022 16:15

If they are ruined then she should pay you what you paid for them. That way you won't be out of pocket.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 21/01/2022 16:17

@KittyKattyFosterMummy

And scratched. Didn't just jump. And the dog shouldn't be jumping on people who don't want to be jumped at all. Not the dog's fault, but he should be trained by his owner.

You're right, it shouldn't be jumping up, but it's hardly "attacking" now is it?! And the scratch would have been accidental due to the dog having claws which could be sharp.

Just out of curiosity @HRMtheQuern, what breed of dog was it?

Teacup chihuahua... The hem is fucked.

@Gwenhwyfar

"Well it would've probably scratched and left a mark in the exact same way..."

So it would have cut or bruised her? That's an attack then surely.

It wouldn't have cut or bruised her though, would it. It would have scratched the surface of her skin, like it did to her jeans.

She's married to the offspring of her MIL. She's known her long enough to know how the dog acts in its own home.

@mamaoffourdc

All this about £19 Jean - a massive TWIT TOOWOO in your face!
Grin I think MN should add an owl emoji.
BacardiOnATuesday · 21/01/2022 16:21

You have bought three pairs OP. What I would do is relegate the scratched jeans to my ‘everyday wear’ clothes and keep the undamaged ones for best.

Unfortunately clothes do get damaged, muddied, worn or things get spilled on them. That’s life.

BashStreetKid · 21/01/2022 16:21

Jeans aren't supposed to have an aesthetic. They're just hard-wearing leisure or manual workwear.

I scratched my DS2s face this morning putting his hair up. Shall I report myself to social services?
EmpressSuiko · 21/01/2022 16:23

Personally I think you are being overly precious, clothes get damaged, it’s annoying but just part of life.

CraftyGin · 21/01/2022 16:23

Please someone explain the owl references. I have been on Mumsnet for over 20 years and this has passed me by.

Gabbiadini · 21/01/2022 16:24

@heathspeedwell

I think you should make owl noises at her.
😂

A recent thread, where the op made owl noises into a colleagues face because they were criticising their yoghurt choice, due to them doing slimming world. Someone posted the link earlier on in this thread..

Is your MILs dog wolverine?
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

I think someone has misled you about the quality of Bench clothing, they put the rrp to make you think you’re getting a great bargain.

Or this is all just a joke. It’s hard to tell.

BertramLacey · 21/01/2022 16:29

Bench are a bit naff to be honest, OP. I think jeans getting a bit scruffy is just one of those things and since you've got two other pairs, I really wouldn't worry about it.

I think it may be..... Something about the asthetic.
GirlInACountrySong · 21/01/2022 16:29

@JohnKettleyIsAWeatherMan

Her own dog in her own home....the dogs nails are her own business...you "walked' in, by your own admission, and likely took the dog by surprise

Entitled much? The dog's claws are absolutely other people's business too if they're causing damage. But I'm sure the OP will consider herself told and tiptoe in wearing her oldest clothes next time. Hmm

maybe mil can't get out to get to dog groomers if its not something she can do herself? nothing to do with being entitled and everything to do with mil doing as she likes in her own environment....op just walked in

what if the floor had just been mopped and she slipped?
or if the garden path was a bit icy and op fell
or the cat jumped up?
or mil had doughnuts and the jam filling fell out

god help those poor bloody jeans!!

@HRMtheQuern

Right, the next person to post a passive aggresive patronising comment will be reported. Because it's largely the reason why I can't enjoy using mumsnet quite so much. I've only ever had cheap jeans not nice ones out of a sale so this was meant to be special for me but thanks a lot.
Boo boo!! What are you 6??
LaChanticleer · 21/01/2022 16:30

YABU

Jeans are originally work wear, and generally developed differences in colouring - the dye runs or fades unevenly. The dog's paws left a superficial mark on the new dye-rich fabric. They didn't tear it. It's likely the mark will disappear, as the jeans get more worn and the fabric more variegated & faded.

That's what I like about good quality denim: it fades and wears in ways that are based on my body and how the jeans mould to me.

GirlInACountrySong · 21/01/2022 16:31

and BENCH are run of the mill (not mil) everyday clothing, available in sports direct! hardly designer

perfect for playing with dogs

i understand your perspectives, however im guessing it's marked them but not enough to make the hole, why would they pay full price if you paid discount,
SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 21/01/2022 16:38

They Are Jeans.

I can’t believe any more words are required.

But just in case, YABU.

KurtWilde · 21/01/2022 16:40

OP what kind of dog is it?

My £9 primark skinny jeans have been on the go for yonks and still going strong despite having dogs jump all over me on a daily basis. Sounds like you got a dodgy pair if they've damaged that easily, jeans are meant to be robust.

ReadySteadyTwins · 21/01/2022 16:40

Have seen the update that this is over one (of three pairs) of £19 "Bench" jeans. And OP wants compensation from her MIL because these got discoloured from a dog, that she knew would be there (and presumably has jumped up before) jumping up?

Christ on a fucking tightrope.

And yes PP is very right, that they put a big "RRP" to make you think you're getting a bargain. Bench jeans are £19 jeans.

Svara · 21/01/2022 16:42

Denim is a hard-wearing 'workwear' fabric, scratches just add character, tell a story, they are not meant to look perfect. The ones you linked were already very faded anyway, so not bought to look new.
