wont pay for damage to my jeans

I actually needed new pants, so I bought 3 new pairs of mostly otton jeans that were the same on sale from a warehouse getting rid of old stock. The jeans are all one shade of blue so any marks would be obvious. I could've got cheaper jeans but I thought I'd treat myself. They no longer have the jeans in my size but are selling them or something similar on the original website for a similar amount.

Dog of a relative unexpectedly jumped up on me and scratched as soon as I got in the door. I didn't expect them to because last times I've come in they've not done that and I've gone in loads of times. I've had these jeans 2 days. The jeans haven't been torn but are damaged. You'd have to look at them to see the scratches. other marks they've made I'm not sure if it'd come out in the wash. This has effected the aesthetic of the jeans and they don't feel as special. They haven't had holes ripped in them so relative is refusing to replace them

Washing jeans too often isn't good for them either, definitely don't tumble dry then you ever get a drier!

FrasierCraneDay · 21/01/2022 16:43

Your posting style rings a bell. Are you the prat that complained a review you wrote wasn't "published"? If not I apologise

sunshinesupermum · 21/01/2022 16:45

Ye gods - you've bought three pairs of the same (branded!) jeans and expect your MiL to pay for one pair that isn't ripped by her dog? YABVU.

I know! I think we've all missed the point she's got another 2 pair the exact same!!
MrBlobbyLivesNextDoor · 21/01/2022 16:47

Well, unless the friend was offering an insurance policy to you before you visited her home, then I would say you were being unreasonable. Particularly if they were massively discounted.

ReadySteadyTwins · 21/01/2022 16:47

Just seen a picture of the jeans. Expecting them to be dark indigo, hence the terrible creature (with terrible claws, and terrible teeth in it's terrible jaws) leaving such contrasting white scratch marks.

They're light stonewash.

Yes, I've had my new jeans on for two weeks and don't intend to wash them anytime soon or they will just fade all over.
ClawedButler · 21/01/2022 16:53

If you want to "feel special", why not wear one of the other 2 identical pairs you have?

germsandcoffee · 21/01/2022 16:55

I'd be annoyed but I'd let it go and maybe wear something not as special to you next time you visit.

JohnKettleyIsAWeatherMan · 21/01/2022 16:55

@Twolostsoulsswimminginafishbow

All this shit for less than twenty quid a pair. Bench are hardly designer even at full price.
What a snooty comment (ditto the other 'it's hardly designer' comment).

OP has already explained that for her this purchase was a treat.

mrsm43s · 21/01/2022 16:58

OP, the dog shouldn't have jumped up at you. But, the problem is that you want £60 compensation for minor, barely visible damage to a pair of £18.99 jeans. That's disproportionate, and ridiculously unreasonable of you.

You are entitled to be compensated for the difference in the value of lightly worn £18.99 jeans in perfect condition and the value of lightly worn £18.99 jeans with a very minor, barely visible mark. That's a couple of quid at most, and most people would let it go, especially within the family.

Using your car analogy, you're asking for a brand new car of three times the value of your car when it was brand new, because somebody got a stone chip on your £500 banger.

HeyUpits2022 · 21/01/2022 16:59

If you push your MIL to buy you a replacement pair or to give you money to buy another pair, then you can pretty much wave goodbye to a great relationship with her.

If you don't care about the relationship between you, then go for it.

What has your DH made of this?

Because they aren't damaged. They're marked, and they might not even be marked!!! And the op is asking for over double the cost back?! That's why. HTH
trunktoes · 21/01/2022 17:00

Either this is made up or you are insane. Which is it?

Yes, but the damage caused was a barely noticeable mark to a pair of £18.99 jeans (that may wash out) and OP wants £60 compensation (and presumably to keep the perfectly wearable slightly marked pair as well). That is what is unreasonable.
Ellowyn · 21/01/2022 17:01

Make the dog pay for the damage. Good luck....................YUBU

IDidntKnowItWasAParty · 21/01/2022 17:02

OP I am the person who will get something new and special (very rarely) and then often before i even get to wear it will get wrecked somehow, or certainly on its first outing. That's just life. Your MIL should not replace your jeans just because they got marked. I suggest buying dark jeans if you dont want any marks, or avoiding all houses with pets in them, and definitely avoid public transport.

trumpisagit · 21/01/2022 17:03

Can I see a pic of the dog (more interesting than jeans)?

ReadySteadyTwins · 21/01/2022 17:03

What a snooty comment (ditto the other 'it's hardly designer' comment).

Oh give over. This amount of drama over a £19 pair of jeans of which she has another two identical pairs, is embarrassing.

Being sanctimonious about it, when you know very well it's not snobbery, and just pointing out how ridiculous OP is being, is just tedious.

PinkSyCo · 21/01/2022 17:03

Fancy trying to charge family for a slight scuff on a pair of cheap jeans. Confused YABU.

LaChanticleer · 21/01/2022 17:03

Denim is a hard-wearing 'workwear' fabric, scratches just add character, tell a story, they are not meant to look perfect. The ones you linked were already very faded anyway, so not bought to look new.

This!

I love it when my jeans get that frayed faded soft feel - it's usually after about 3 years of wear, just before they tear (I don't DO those awful jeans with manufactured holes in them, yuk). THat's the point at which jeans are most comfortable and stylish - I always notice that on other people - that lovely crumpled faded look.

upaladderagain · 21/01/2022 17:05

I'm glad you're not my daughter-in-law.

Get divorced and find a man who is either an orphan or whose parents are dog-haters.
Radical!

What??? The minute you wash them you get lines on them
