wont pay for damage to my jeans

HRMtheQuern · 21/01/2022 12:36

I actually needed new pants, so I bought 3 new pairs of mostly otton jeans that were the same on sale from a warehouse getting rid of old stock. The jeans are all one shade of blue so any marks would be obvious. I could've got cheaper jeans but I thought I'd treat myself. They no longer have the jeans in my size but are selling them or something similar on the original website for a similar amount.

Dog of a relative unexpectedly jumped up on me and scratched as soon as I got in the door. I didn't expect them to because last times I've come in they've not done that and I've gone in loads of times. I've had these jeans 2 days. The jeans haven't been torn but are damaged. You'd have to look at them to see the scratches. other marks they've made I'm not sure if it'd come out in the wash. This has effected the aesthetic of the jeans and they don't feel as special. They haven't had holes ripped in them so relative is refusing to replace them
@AlDanvers, the op only paid 18.99 it was 50 overall for 3 pairs!
Oh. I am so confused. I thought op said these were expensive.

Well then I would buy her a pair at asda. Or give her £20 to replace them.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 21/01/2022 15:41

@LuckySantangelo35

But as previous poster states- why should people have to deck themselves out in cold clothes they’re not bothered about just in case dog happens to be poorly trained and jumps up??
They don't have to visit. My dog doesn't jump up. But him and my cats all go on the furniture, so I'd heavily recommend not coming to my house in anything black that attracts hair
WutheringHeights66 · 21/01/2022 15:42

I just don’t get why you would go into a house where you know there’s a dog that recognises you in your favourite clothes and then get upset when it jumps up. I also don’t believe a dog jumping up would has spoil a pair of Bench jeans —that you have another two pairs of—

mumofEandE · 21/01/2022 15:42

Did the dog say sorry?

Staffy1 · 21/01/2022 15:42

It wouldn’t even occur to me to ask her to pay for them. It’s just one of those things that are a bit annoying.

Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 21/01/2022 15:42

You are batshit

If i was your mother in law i would be vry worried about my son

MeSanniesareBrannies · 21/01/2022 15:43

I am very excited about the outcome of this wash. I’m invested, now.

girlmom21 · 21/01/2022 15:45

@GreenFingersWouldBeHandy

The wash cycle is done but don't have a tumble dryer and no where to hang the clothes yet

Can't see how that is anyone else's problem...

I can't see why you'd let your washing sit in the washing machine but I think she was just warning us she can't give an update yet
butterpuffed · 21/01/2022 15:47

I know cars don't cost as much as jeans

Have jeans gone up in price then ?

GrapefruitPink · 21/01/2022 15:50

Dry the patch with a hairdryer.
Don't think I can wait until tomorrow for a pic

SEOeieio · 21/01/2022 15:50

I'd be annoyed and disappointed, but it's not worth arguing with family or in-laws over a pair of jeans. Now you know that the dog can sometimes jump, so don't wear nice things to her house. These things happen. Besides, even if she were a stranger and not your MIL, it would be very unreasonable to expect someone to buy you an expensive replacement for something you bought at a huge discount. Doesn't matter how annoying it is, that's not right.

toppkatz · 21/01/2022 15:51

Lesson learned - one does not wear expensive clothes when visiting a relative with a jumpy-uppy dog.

Gwenhwyfar · 21/01/2022 15:52

So if you'd been wearing a skirt, the dog would have torn your actual leg?
Dogs shouldn't be jumping on people and scratching them!

girlmom21 · 21/01/2022 15:53

Highly doubtful as the dog didn't tear her jeans.

This is also a good point.. op I think we need to see a pic of the damage in order to really give true opinions
sanbeiji · 21/01/2022 15:55

Really hard to comment unless there’s a photo.
Hence I reserve all comments

Fairylightsongs · 21/01/2022 15:55

I feel a bit bad for the op. The jeans were clearly special to her, she normally gets supermarket jeans and if she was in need of new ones, likely doesn’t buy clothes often or habe much disposable income, so she was delighted with her jeans, and felt she had a good brand for a change, and was proud to be wearing them.

Then the dog scratched them, and she’s upset because they were important to her.

Lots of us have been skint before, and it doesn’t matter if these were less than twenty quid, it was something special to her, and now they are marked.

The issue here is they were really important to her, so she’s upset they are damaged, hence the car analogy. For her, the jeans are a big deal.

starfishmummy · 21/01/2022 15:56

Wipes coffee off screen.

Gwenhwyfar · 21/01/2022 15:56

@AryaStarkWolf

I can't imagine making things awkward with my MIL over a pair of Jeans especially since by the sounds of it you were in her house where her dog lives.
It's OK for animals to attack in their own homes then?
GrapefruitPink · 21/01/2022 15:57

Oh for god sake. Hardly attacked her.

KrisAkabusi · 21/01/2022 15:57

@JohnKettleyIsAWeatherMan

Personally I don't think YABU - it's not OK for other people's pets to damage clothes or property - but as soon as I saw this was about a dog I knew which way this conversation was going to go. rolls eyes MN is so predictable sometimes.

Why should we all have to deck ourselves out in old clothes to cater to how other people's dogs may decide to behave? They should be trained not to jump up at people, simple as that. I have owned dogs myself and if I'd been the relative I'd have apologised and offered to pay.

Would you offer three times what the OP actually paid though? Because that's what she was looking for.
ForTheLoveOfSleep · 21/01/2022 15:57

@HRMtheQuern

I know cars don't cost as much as jeans but to give an example

Say someone dents your car
'oh you might be able to get that sucked out anyway'

OK so by your theory OP if I totalled someone's used car I should buy them the latest car of the same model?
Snoopsnoggysnog · 21/01/2022 15:57

Ridiculous. Are you like this with your side of the family as well or just with your in laws?

I knew from your OP that this was going to be your MILs dog

crazyjinglist · 21/01/2022 15:58

Hard to say to what extent YABU without seeing the 'damage', but based on this from your OP: "You'd have to look at them to see the scratches. other marks they've made I'm not sure if it'd come out in the wash. This has effected the aesthetic of the jeans and they don't feel as special", I strongly suspect YABVU.

arghdilema · 21/01/2022 15:58

I honestly can't believe they'd be damaged from a dog jumping up - if they are if needed taking it up with the supplier and not the dog owner.
I wear jeans that admittedly cost about £150 but they've never been damaged by dogs or cats claws.
