I know he'll be replaced by someone equally awful and I know he's not quite gone yet, but I can't remember when I felt uplifted about politics and the ejection of this national embarrassment is warming my cockles. Anyone else feel the same?

Can't get over the feeling this is all scripted and we are being played.

ClaudineClare · 19/01/2022 11:06

@JaniieJones

'His tears are all for himself and not for the suffering that went on while he was partying'

Partying. Aka eating and drinking at work. As Labour did..

I thought you were all for waiting for the Sue Gray report before passing judgement on what really went on, JJ?
the80sweregreat · 19/01/2022 11:06

Anyone defending the government over their handling of the pandemic hasn't had to watch a love one die over FaceTime or not have access to PPE whilst working in a care home whilst number ten partied on.
Yes, the NHS did a good job of the vaccines and boosters, but there are many more looming problems now and ' freedom ' day only lasted July to November, people are still under covid restrictions , even if it's loose ones. Covid is still around , the hospitals are still struggling , I've heard horror stories about my nearest one and I just hope I never have to go in it as it sounded like a war zone :(
I agree that vacancies are up, but getting a job isn't that easy and many are not on fantastic contracts either , fuel prices are up and things are tight for people financially and will get worse in April with the new NI rises too and Russia is gearing up for a war.
It's still grim.

@mellongoose

It's a massive distraction at a time when the country needs stability. It is no good for anyone. But, of course, Dominic Cummings, the master strategist knows this.
This.

Tragically, this

Hortensia16 · 19/01/2022 11:09

If it is true that he was crying in Cabinet then there is at least one person there disloyal enough to report it to the press. And that person could be our next Prime Minister.

Whatever the outcome, this 'chatty rat' culture of leaking stories to the media has to stop. It's cheap and unprofessional. We need a government that has some integrity and competence. And better senior civil servants.

ScribblingPixie · 19/01/2022 11:09

It matters because people were dying alone without the comfort of family around them, their funerals were then restricted with no wake.

Although I've zero sympathy for Boris Johnson, he has experienced much of the worst of the pandemic - way more than I have. He ended up in intensive care with covid and came, I suppose, fairly close to dying with no family around him. His mother died - not of covid - but presumably the same restrictions applied to her funeral.

AgnesNaismith · 19/01/2022 11:13

Boris is fucked, he’ll be off tomorrow which coincides nicely with the next episode of the apprentice - another room full of incompetent narcissistic wankers.

It’ll be a good thing for the Conservative party too, he’s the ‘face’ of the pandemic and we’re used to hearing bad news from him. They need a good news PM now which is funny, because that’s exactly what Boris desperately wanted to be.

Shambolicatthleast · 19/01/2022 11:13

@MarshaBradyo the tories were quite happy to use Cummings tactical 'genius' when it suited them ? His connection with Cambridge Analytica and its manipulation of british voters re Brexit was ok when they were winning. Remember how they managed to engage 2 million Non voters in favour of the Brexit cause by dodgy facebook adverts etc ?
But now you are miffed off and surprised he's doing what he's always done Confused

the80sweregreat · 19/01/2022 11:14

Boris Johnson probably ended up in hospital with covid 19, because he shook hands with people in hospital and carried on as if the virus was just an inconvenience back in early March 2020 He wasn't in the best shape back then either (I'm not fat shaming by the way ) with a high BMI
It was unfortunate he became so poorly , but a few people saw it coming too!

Survivingmy3yearold · 19/01/2022 11:14

@JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil

The ‘at least he knows what a woman is!’ types are nuts. When asked what misogyny was, Raab believed it also applied to the abuse of men. The Tories also didn’t want to label misogyny as a hate crime but as long as any of them are openly anti-trans some people on here will vote themselves into poverty and international embarrassment to support them. Bonkers.
@JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil yes 👏
ClaudineClare · 19/01/2022 11:15

PMQs on soon, will be worth watching to see what Johnson's demeanor is. Bullish or contrite?

Maverick197 · 19/01/2022 11:15

I am just glad to see the smug smirk finally gone off his face. Johnson, Raab, Patel, Gove- always that snug smirk on their faces no matter what tragedies the rest of the nation has to go through due to their incomperence. But with Johnson the arrogance and sense of entitlement is on a completely different level, all his life he has thought he is something special and treats people with contempt.
It is just nice to see him not getting away with his lies this time.

Shambolicatthleast · 19/01/2022 11:15

Like we were played a la Brexit. But that was ok Hmm

the80sweregreat · 19/01/2022 11:18

Bullish I think today
He'll wheel out that Labour broke the rules too !!
It'll turn into tit for tat

Anotherhill · 19/01/2022 11:18

@myotherprofile
It’s not just the census. If you look further into Scottish politics you’ll see it.

I voted remain so even though I recognise he handled it tactically much better than the side I voted for I wasn’t happy about it.

It’s a while back now but at the time I was fairly annoyed. So no I don’t think your post stands. He helped win the vote by doing whatever it took, not great then either.

Tanith · 19/01/2022 11:20

"Until Labour and the Lib Dens get their act together on gender ideology I will be forced to vote Tory."

Mmm! Crispin Blunt is a real Women's advocate, isn't he?!! Hmm

This.

SueSaid · 19/01/2022 11:21

'It’s similar to the petrol crisis which ran off the back of media frenzy. We’re really susceptible to it and the media love click bait and sales. So off we go following the pied piper - only this time it’s Cummings.'

Exactly.

Oh dear Janiee. You know that was an old story in the Sun and was debunked? Because it didn't happen.
SueSaid · 19/01/2022 11:29

'Oh dear Janiee. You know that was an old story in the Sun and was debunked? Because it didn't happen.'

Well no. Starmer himself was in telly this week saying it was work, a workplace gathering with takeaways and beer.

Maybe look at the rest of the details of the story. It was a world away from what happened with Johnson. See below. Not quite 100 people invited over to a BYOB eh?

The Labour leader defended the photo, which re-emerged over the weekend, saying he was working on the Hartlepool by-election campaign and stopped to eat a takeaway with colleagues at a constituency office in Durham last May.

At the time, people in England were not allowed to mix indoors apart from for work.

"We were working, a takeaway turned up, and we stopped to eat it," Sir Keir told LBC. "We didn't break any rules, we did nothing wrong."

Cornettoninja · 19/01/2022 11:35

The defence of a man who has already admitted that he was wrong is astounding tbh.

The prime minister can and should be held to a high standard, they occupy the most powerful position in the country. There’s very little room for ‘oppsies’. This should not be a surprise to BJ, he actively positioned himself to be PM. He doesn’t need sympathy or to be given chances, he sold himself as the best person for the job and hasn’t achieved or maintained (depending on your position) that.

Regardless of the circumstances these leaks have come about the trust and integrity has gone in BJ, I’d like to see that mood extend to scrutiny of the rest of the cabinet and Tory party but I doubt it. Rees-Moggs must be chuffed it’s taken the attention of his financial investigations, he’ll be looking to see what he can salvage. Boris can only really regain any integrity on a personal/professional level by recognising that his position is irrevocably damaged and therefore untenable.

Cummings is largely irrelevant past the historical information he holds from his time in cabinet. He is a product of the people who choose to use him to achieve their own ends but that doesn’t mean the information he may/may not be involved in leaking now isn’t of relevance to the wider picture. There will be another figure who steps into the chasm he left behind, he’s not unique and isn’t the first and isn’t some all-knowing evil genius. He’s looking for revenge and they’ve all given him the evidence on a plate. Cummings is only relevant in the sense that if you show me who your friends are I’ll tell you who you are.

SueSaid · 19/01/2022 11:35

Blah blah blah @zonder.

You can either have food and booze with work colleagues at work or you can't.
