To be really enjoying Boris Johnson's downfall?

I know he'll be replaced by someone equally awful and I know he's not quite gone yet, but I can't remember when I felt uplifted about politics and the ejection of this national embarrassment is warming my cockles. Anyone else feel the same?

@Florianus

22itsallnew: *@Florianus* but you believe Johnson to be blameless allowing this to happen under his Government, in his work and home premises?

Why is it necessary to keep repeating the same point over and over again. Is it that people don't read the thread properly, or cannot remember what they have already read?

I don't believe he is any more to blame than others who attended. The person to blame (as in just about every contravention of lockdown rules) is the person who organised the event.

No.10, including its garden, is the workplace for some 170 civil servants. It is not some private area used by the PM (who, in any case, doesn't live at No.10).

@Florianus So you think the person who arranged it (who sent the email invitation) was in the wrong for arranging said lockdown drinks - but you think all the attendees are blameless (couldn't possibly know that drinking in the garden doesn't constitute work?)

Sigh.

@BashStreetKid

Wow.

Latest from The Telegraph: partygoers at the party the night before Prince Philip's funeral were served wine and mixers in disposable cups, spilled wine onto the office printer and took turns on the Prime Minister's son's slide, at a time when indoor socialising was banned.

The Telegraph reports that it has seen text messages indicating attendees partying until 1am, having started at around 6pm, the night when Downing Street is alleged to have held two leaving parties: one for Boris Johnson's then-director of Communications, James Slack and another for a departing photographer.

Was that a work event, then?

Either way

Would love to have been there!

Because he's called their bluff. Of course they're not going to pull the funding when it would prove their threat.

Funding for the new school was announced almost a year ago -

Bury Times 5 Feb 2021

A LONG-awaited new high school for Radcliffe has been given the official green light...

the bid has been endorsed by Education Secretary Gavin Williamson as one of 21 proposed new free schools nationwide...

Welcoming the announcement, Bury South MP Christian Wakeford said...
"Since last December I have met with the Secretary of State for Education multiple times to make the case for a new high school and presented him with our petition, signed by over 3,000 residents.

I thought we already knew that Boris Johnson left for Chequers on the Thursday - the two parties took place on the Friday?

jgw1 · 21/01/2022 17:59

No, as I didn't go to any.

Neither did I because we were in the middle of a pandemic and it would have been breaking the law.

What was your reason?

So why is there play equipment for Wilf in the No.10 garden?

Quite. So, he lives in No 11. Are we really reduced to this level of pedantry?
ClaudineClare · 21/01/2022 18:16

That Telegraph article , with its focus on the parties Johnson didn't attend, suggests to me that civil servants are going to take the rap for this.Johnson will slime his way out of it all.

Blossomtoes · 21/01/2022 18:18

He’ll try. Unfortunately for him I think that ship’s sailed.

If appointed one person who then committed criminal offences at work I would be annoyed. Two and I might start to question my judgement. If I appointed multiple such people I would know my judgement was seriously suspect. What about you?
jgw1 · 21/01/2022 18:21

This thread is nearly full and it has been as enjoyable as Johnson's downfall. I do hope that one of the regular contributors who have made it so good creates a sequel.

ENoeuf · 21/01/2022 18:56

We should call it Downfall or Game of Life?

Peregrina · 21/01/2022 21:18

I have just read that the event started at 6 pm and went on until 1 am.
Since it was work, will they be putting in for overtime?

(I suspect not. I am pretty sure that they all know a party when they attend one, even if Johnson says he doesn't.)

It appears that it is only a party if Boris isn't there.

With the trouble we face on the border with Russia I would rather have him there on the front line, parties or whatever than relying on a leadership race at this moment in time or Biden.

I agree, if Boris was on the frontline, the Russians would all be so busy laughing at him it would completely put them off invading.

Now is a shit time for a leadership contest, I agree. But that's why it's better he goes fast and let's things settle than prolong things.

It seems that Wragg has gone to the police to report the Whips’ office.

Mr Wragg, Conservative MP for Hazel Grove, said the threats could amount to "blackmail" and urged colleagues to report them to the police.

He was immediately backed by the Commons Speaker, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, who said allegations about potentially criminal offences would be a matter for the police.

Mr Wragg confirmed on Friday that he had arranged to meet with a detective from the Metropolitan Police in the House of Commons early next week.

Mr Wragg said that he would briefly tell the detective "several" examples of bullying and intimidation, in some cases involving public money.

He told The Telegraph on Friday that he wanted to leave any investigation of these claims "to the experts" rather than No 10.

He said: "I stand by what I have said. No amount of gas-lighting will change that.

"The offer of Number 10 to investigate is kind but I shall leave it to the experts. I am meeting the Police early next week."

Regarding the blackmail claims, a Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "As with any such allegations, should a criminal offence be reported to the Met, it would be considered."

Apologies to Clav for trample on her turf.

VikingOnTheFridge · 21/01/2022 22:50

Good for him.

ClaudineClare · 21/01/2022 22:55

Very interesting. He must have some sort of evidence to put to the police.

It gets murkier and murkier.

ClaudineClare · 21/01/2022 22:59

I set up a new thread in case we want to continue discussions...

Exactly. And then when the MP showed disturbing signs of disapproving of the party leader disobeying the law, he was threatened with funding being withdrawn.

I thought we already knew that Boris Johnson left for Chequers on the Thursday - the two parties took place on the Friday?

Of course we knew. We also know that he presided over an organisation the culture of which was that this sort of shindig was acceptable. He doesn't escape the buck just because he was off in the second home.

Blossomtoes · 21/01/2022 23:14

Nice one, thank you @ClaudineClare.
