My husband and I were talking about this over dinner and I'm genuinely interested in people's answers (not looking to wind anyone up).

Please will people stop referring to the Conservative Party as 'tories'. It is belittling and rude. Yes, I know they were called Tories years ago before anyone points that out.
Why? That is their name.
Rhannion · 19/01/2022 19:27

@tae19

Well that didn't take long to descend into anti-trans rights. So sad that some people are heralding this as the ONLY issue. The idea that traditional conservatives give a shit about women would be laughable if it wasn't so ridiculous. I sometimes forget it the real world how many anti rights people are on mumsnet, it's disgusting.
What’s disgusting is men telling women what’s best for them and trying to give away our rights. I’m pro woman , not anti trans.
pilates · 19/01/2022 19:28

Yes because there is no one else fit to do the job.

Rhannion · 19/01/2022 19:30

And frankly for me it is the main issue as it effects all women, young and older over all our lifetimes, in every avenue of our lives.
Once those rights are gone, we won’t get them back.

Erm no

I don’t think it is belittling and rude and at this point if someone told me that it was belittling and rude id probably use it even more

Nope.
Enough4me · 19/01/2022 19:52

Anti-trans rights would mean stopping trans being trans. I don't think that's happening. Trans can have trans rights.

Anti-womens rights is the real issue. Women's rights aren't up for men to steal!

I can't believe that many would continue voting Tory if they knew. I can. A lot of people seem to love a race to the bottom and blaming poor people for being "feckless". There's a lot of nasty uncaring people in the UK.
I think people are just gullible, the Tories are and always have been very good at lying, they come from the hitler school of public speaking really, flatter the audience tell them they are are great and everything would be so much better once we have gotten rid of the problem, i.e the lazy poor people, the immigrants, at one time the blacks, the interfering EU etc, everything is always coming from some enemy that needs putting in its place, rather then Tory greed and incompetence in government.

no one takes any notice of whats going on around them as long as their noses are buried in the tory press echoing the same lies and blame games and the dangling of the carrot of rewards for the "hard working British people" etc.

its unfortunate that the other parties just are not so good at being professional bullshitters.

my father is a tory voter his head is full of absolute rubbish from the daily telegraph that doesnt stand up to any logical reasoning or googling of facts. and both he and my sister voted for brexit because they thought the money spent on EU membership would goto the NHS instead, me, my mother and brother told them they were being idiots and the NHS wouldnt see a penny and we would lose so much more then the cost of membership, but they wouldnt listen because the tory press told them so, it must be true politicians cant possibly lie about that. (my father was in his 70s and my sister in her 40s both well old enough to know better).

Mookie81 · 19/01/2022 20:33

I said it on a previous thread and I'll say it again here.
There are a few stock phrases people on here like to use to justify their choice; 'they know what a woman is', 'I can look _in the face and say I did everything I could' (although ticking a box falls quite short of that Hmm).
People don't have the courage to say 'the tories protect my financial interests and I don't want to be less comfortable and pay more tax for people who have less than I do'.
Being called a woman is less important to me than children being adequately fed, people being able to put a decent roof over their heads and pay the bills for it, people having access to adequate mental health support, families and schools receiving even half decent SEN support, getting rid of zero hours contracts, the lack of police presence on the streets, the disinterest in the many brown kids killing each other every day, the fact that billions upon billions of our money has been funnelled into rich wankers' pockets when we're told that there is no money to pay an actual living wage.
It frankly disgusts me. And maybe Labour can't or won't deal with all of that, but the tories (yes the fucking tories) have demonstrated they are not willing to address any of the above.

Enough4me · 19/01/2022 20:35

It matters to me that women can remain to be women, without women meaning anyone.

DerAlteMann · 19/01/2022 20:36

@DaisyTheUnicorn

I think Tory voters will still vote Tory as it ties in with their beliefs and they don't like the alternative 😔. It does make you wonder if anything would stop them voting Tory...
If it ties in with their belief, why would the stop voting Tory?
LondonQueen · 19/01/2022 20:36

Yes as the competition is not worth the time of day.

Kendodd · 19/01/2022 20:47

the tories protect my financial interests and I don't want to be less comfortable and pay more tax

Except they don't even do that unless you're super rich.

@VelvetChairGirl you manage to both be incredibly rude about people you know nothing about, and also manage to invoke Godwin's Law.

They could be doing all sorts of things AND ticking a box

YukoandHiro · 19/01/2022 20:49

Nope. But I've never voted Tory before either. So I'm not the best test of opinion.

I used to think like this. I was being a knob.

Protect financial interest

I earn well under the average wage and if you do it by hours worked not hours paid I would be well below minimum wage. (As it is I am minimum wage for a responsible job).

Why is it so hard to believe other people have different thoughts and feelings to you? Experience that might colour them differently?

Labour has increasingly become the party of no empathy.

The staunchest conservative voters I know once let a homeless man sleep in their house for a fortnight because they felt it was the Christian thing to do. I mean, insanely dangerous and naive, but not hard of heart. They made their choices through their own experience of life and numerous sources.

Of course, I used to virtue signal how they were evil Tories when I was a virtue signalling tribal voter. Now I have grown up a bit I cringe at h

She isn't wrong though, Cummings was bought in by Gove and then Bojo, he used methods employed by certain 20thC dictators to win over voters... the truth being the first casualty.

Doesn't say much for the Tories that they will employ any such means to win does it?

Alexandra2001 · 19/01/2022 21:06

There are good people across all parties.

But didn't the Bullingdon club members smash things up and burn money in front of homeless people?

I'd say denying poor children free school meals over hols, shows a distinct lack of empathy.

MattDillonsEyebrows · 19/01/2022 21:10

This post is pretty much showing that the left, have still not learnt from the past! Whilst it’s not quite descended into words such as ‘selfish’ ‘disabled haters’, etc. the posters claiming people are gullible, and the like are just so conceited! Is it not possible that we are all privvy to the same information and some people will draw different conclusions? Same with vaccinations and Brexit! People have different views, they’re not gullible, or thick!
Erosion of women’s rights might not be as important for some, luckily for those people, it is important to others who can fight the fight, whilst you fight another injustice.
We are never going to get full unity, so it’s good that some can concentrate on one inequality whilst others concentrate on another one.

Oh and in case you’re wondering I am fully vaccinated and I think Brexit was a stupid idea, however I respect the fact that others don’t agree with me and I like debating and chatting about it!!

TooBigForMyBoots · 19/01/2022 21:11

This Conservative government is no friend to women. Their proposed reforms to the GRA and the refusal of Liz Truss to advocate for women and children in the consultation proves it.

WTF sort of Jedi mind trick have they pulled off, that intelligent women ignore the fact that the Tories are responsible for the Self ID threat?Confused

lljkk · 19/01/2022 21:17

Tories being held up as Champions of Women's Rights is a pretty funny narrative.

My own irrational issue is stuff like vaccine mandates for care & NHS staff, and Covid certificates to go to certain places or events. The bodily autonomy & civil liberties implications shock me, I can't believe all the so-called "lefties" I know enthusiastically embracing authoritarian poliices & attitudes. Eye-opening.

I'd think that I'd abstain before I could vote Tory, though. I suppose lesser of 2 evils, if the choice was Galloway vs. Johnson etc.

Apparently from an Irish word meaning "outlaws" or "robbers", so not belittling, just an accurate descriptor. Also topical, given the other lying good-for-nothing currently in the news: "Tories" dates back to the Cavaliers who supported the then Duke of York's rights to the throne.
