My husband and I were talking about this over dinner and I'm genuinely interested in people's answers (not looking to wind anyone up).

@Veritat

Maybe but it's a start they at least know what a woman actually is!

And, for them, a women's place is in the home.

Well now, that's just silly!

Well no, we have had two Tory women prime ministers.....

The conservatives didn't fully appreciate the fallout from the GRA reform. It was all done on the sly behind closed doors, there has recently been a huge push in Trans rights and with that push has come the huge problems created for women. Evidence is now showing how women are being actively harmed by TWAW and women are organising, grassroots groups are popping up and fighting these policies every step of the way, we are growing in numbers as more of the public realise what's happening, the Tories are the only ones listening, not because they give a shit but because they see a vote winner and are willing to act on it.
I also need to look my daughters in the eyes and tell them I did everything I could to protect them, if that means voting for the Tories then so be it.

TooBigForMyBoots · 19/01/2022 15:57

Self ID is a Conservative proposal.

They proposed it.

The Conservative Minister for Women & Equalities Liz didn't bother her arse advocating for women or children's rights wrt GRA committee. She didn't turn up.
Penny Mordaunt, who worked on the GRA reforms firmly believes TWAW. She is still a Conservative Minister and trans activist on the front bench.
Crispin Blunt, Conservative MP, has branded the BBC "Institutionally Transphobic" and makes life difficult for women who express GC views by complaining to their employers.

What did the Conservative Manifesto say about Self ID? Was there a promise made to women?

horsesanddrywhitewine · 19/01/2022 16:00

I don't know.

We're farmers, landowners who have historically done well under Tory rule and whose policies have been infinitely more favourable, on paper they still are.

But so far in the last year of Tory rule they have signed a trade deal with NZ allowing an influx of cheap imported lamb whilst beating us with a stick about carbon sequestration and rewilding under the agriculture act 2020. And then after another round of "farmers are killing the countryside" they signed a trade extension on imported cane sugar flown thousands of miles when we have a sustainable and important British sugar industry which has much less of a carbon impact.

So turkeys voting for christmas but I'd consider another party if they just focussed on sensible agricultural policies. At present it's virtue signalling - turning our countryside into a national park whilst supporting imported food produce grown in countries with far less responsible environmental policies.

TooBigForMyBoots · 19/01/2022 16:01

Please don't vote for any candidate who ties themselves in knots trying to define what a woman is.

What was PM Johnson's response to this question @TameDucksAtChatsworth? Was he even asked?

Whammyyammy · 19/01/2022 16:02

Vote for Tory, 100% yes, as the opposition are worse still.

Christoncrutches · 19/01/2022 16:16

@Mountaingoat12

It’s just shocking how economically illiterate and blind to the drastic implications of independence so many SNP voters are. Do they not care about people on benefits? People that work for the public sector? Pensioners? People with mortgages? They just stick their fingers in their ears and ignore it all, choosing to believe instead the sheer nonsense that Nicola spouts as it suits their ridiculous notion that Scotland is somehow downtrodden and hampered being in the union. Sign!
Where have you found these projections of catastrophic change to public services etc? According to www.parliament.co.uk analysis just before the referendum, no such predictions were made. Fiscal tightening measures - sure. Uncertainty - yep.

Brexit is far more calamitous than Scottish Independence and I definitely agree it should be considered a significant enough material change that warrants a second referendum.

Worse how!? Policies?
Blessex · 19/01/2022 16:19

@TooBigForMyBoots but that’s the point. He doesn’t need to be asked because he doesn’t have female MPs too scared to turn up to their own party conference. That is why Kier was asked.

TooBigForMyBoots · 19/01/2022 16:22

Since his party proposed Self ID, he really should have been asked. Lots of other people were asked, why not him?Confused

Blessex · 19/01/2022 16:25

That is now no longer policy for the Tories tho. So why ask ?

TooBigForMyBoots · 19/01/2022 16:30

What do you mean @Blessex? Have they got rid of it?

Veryverycalmnow · 19/01/2022 16:40

I won't vote for Tories. Sadly, they seem to continue to mock the poor and vulnerable with their actions and policies, with very little culpability.

WindyState · 19/01/2022 16:48

I'm honestly curious as to what the tories would need to do for you to change your mind.
Blessex · 19/01/2022 17:01

@TooBigForMyBoots yep. It was a Theresa May thing

Alcoh · 19/01/2022 17:02

@WindyState it is more what the opposition need to do

TooBigForMyBoots · 19/01/2022 17:22

The 3rd report into GRA reform was put forward just last month @Blessex. It noted Liz Truss's failure to appear before it in her role as Minister for Women and Equalities.

Has it been scrapped since?Confused

BlackCountryWench2 · 19/01/2022 17:54

I’ve only voted Tory for the last few years. I grew up in a staunchly Socialist, activist household. However, being aspirational, hard-working, provincial and educated working class I felt completely abandoned by the Labour Party. They weren’t and aren’t simply interested in people like me. Jeremy Corbyn was the final nail in the coffin. No matter how bad the Tories get, they can never, ever be as poor as Labour. See what’s happening at Sandwell and Walsall Councils in the West Midlands for an idea on what effect these clueless, corrupt, dangerous Labour criminals have at grassroots level.

stoppedlurking · 19/01/2022 18:13

Will continue to vote Tory. The alternative is not an option. Boris was always going to go this year. As soon as the Covid started to come under control the vultures would gather.

OfstedOffred · 19/01/2022 18:24

I think a lot of people can't shake their admiration of wealthier well educated people. Tory MPs tend to be older, affluent, highly educated, and I think sometimes the other parties field candidates that aren't very "impressive". Where I live this has started to change but realistically it takes decades to shift.

Also labour were a party strongly constructed around unions that have become wildly less relevant in many areas, they haven't really transitioned their public image to keep up with the times.

The Tories tend to hurt the wealthy least, so attract wealthy donors. Money helps bolster grass roots party, get new candidates coming through and develop infrastructure, pay for advisors and marketing.

No I won't stop @AutumnAlmanack. It's a name the party has had since the 18th Century.

LittleGwyneth · 19/01/2022 19:23

I wouldn't vote Tory because there's no point where I live. But the party stuff (as in wine and cheese, not Tory party) wouldn't have changed my mind if I lived somewhere with a decent Conservative MP.

My view is that people right at the top of the tree have always - and will always - followed different rules. Life is different for the very rich and the very powerful. I might not like that, but it's true. So if someone is doing a good job at running the country, to me it feels illogical to get rid of them because they've done something objectionable. I would rather have a leader who does a good job for the economy and improves quality of life, even if they don't follow the rules in their private life.

I don't think Boris is an example of that - but if we did have a PM who was doing a stellar job of leading the country, while flouting all rules and regulations, I would feel quite relaxed about that.

Blossomtoes · 19/01/2022 19:26

@AutumnAlmanack

Please will people stop referring to the Conservative Party as 'tories'. It is belittling and rude. Yes, I know they were called Tories years ago before anyone points that out.
😂
