My husband and I were talking about this over dinner and I'm genuinely interested in people's answers (not looking to wind anyone up).

@DdraigGoch

I think people are just gullible, the Tories are and always have been very good at lying, they come from the hitler school of public speaking really,

@VelvetChairGirl you manage to both be incredibly rude about people you know nothing about, and also manage to invoke Godwin's Law.

Why because I dissect the wording of the press?

been doing it for years ever since I learned the psychological tricks of leading people to a conclusion.

used to sit there with papers analyzing how they worded articles about tories and labour and underlining the key words used to make people reach the desired conclusion, it was all clear as day when you learned what to look for, its all about wording.

the press are well versed in manipulating people to reach the desired view and the majority of our press is tory.

that coupled with the lying of the Tories is one hell of a combination, its no wonder people who were alive at the time so should know better, blame labour for a recession (forgetting all the tory led ones), forget austerity, think Brexit was something the public asked for when infact they have been groomed since the 80s to blame the EU for everything bad and to give credit to the tories for everything good thats come from being in the EU.

In fact, just realised I fall into the 'people vulnerable to Conservative policies' quite a lot.

Disability/life limiting in the immediate family. Check
Minimum wage. Check.
Sen needs. Check.
Mental health crisis in the last year. Check.

So now we've established I'm not 'protecting my wealth etc' perhaps you can listen to what's actually being said.

Most people on this thread have not said they support the Conservatives for the most part. Even if they have. I respect their right to their opinion. But anyway. What most people have said is, that, whilst they are fully aware that the conservatives are no friend to women and started the whole GRC nonsense, they are the only party that has backtracked.
Libs, greens and labour say vote for us, self I'd definitely in. We don't want your bigoted vote.

So people will
A)Vote with their feet
B)Vote for the least worst option
C) Become disengaged
D) all of the above.

It's not a difficult concept. For the HP nerds among us. It's like the choice between voting for Professor Umbridge, who you know is working for Voldemort and likes putting those anti Muggle laws in place, or voting for Mr Malfoy, who whilst he had anti Muggle leanings has come to realise if it goes through they'll be ramifications for him he didn't forsee.
It's snake or weasel. It's no choice at all, but until something changes it is the only choice we have.

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 19/01/2022 21:28

I am a bit gobsmacked that some people honestly think that saying the word tory means you are being belittling and rude

WorriedMumsDontSleep · 19/01/2022 21:29

@RufustheFloralmissingreindeer

I used to think like this. I was being a knob

What makes you think you’ve changed?

Well I try not to use the word Tory to deliberately wind people up for one. I also am learning to understand people come at things from different angles to me. Not easy, as I have autism, but I do try.
P0ntiacBandit · 19/01/2022 21:34

Not specifically Boris, but have no problem in voting for the Tories.

Pieceofpurplesky · 19/01/2022 21:37

@DdraigGoch

I'm pretty sure that there will be a new leader by the next election, and I'm not going to harbour a grudge against someone who wasn't implicated or complicit in these parties. Truss seems like the frontrunner at the moment and at least she has had the guts to unequivocally state the bleeding obvious: "women do have vaginas", which is something that the Shadow Cabinet and senior figures in all of the other mainstream parties struggle with. My local MP engages well with constituents. In general, I find little to tempt me to vote for other parties. I live under a Labour administration here in Wales and it's crap.
The same Liz Truss whose voting record shows she has no regard for women and their financial struggles at all? So you would vote on one issue for women but not another?
RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 19/01/2022 21:37

Well I try not to use the word Tory to deliberately wind people up for one

Only that particular poster 🙂 I’m not keen on being told what words i can and can’t use unless obviously the word is actually belittling and rude…which I don’t believe it is

I live in a tory stronghold….just about everyone i know who votes for the tory party calls them the tory party.

Thank you for replying to my post though

Pieceofpurplesky · 19/01/2022 21:42

@Uncurtailed

Yep - would and will most likely vote Tory next time. The media has been in an overblown frenzy about the parties. Whilst I can understand how disappointing their actions were and have been, they were hardly the only rules breakers of the COVID restrictions.

The other issue is also if I don't vote Tory, who am I going to vote for? Labour is equally (if not more so) as awful, Lib Dems haven't had a decent leader in my living memory and other parties like the Greens, couldn't lead a horse to water.

Better the devil you know.

They were the rule makers though ...
Lou197 · 19/01/2022 21:43

If Boris is still leader I will be spoiling my vote as there is no alternative.I have been disgusted by the 'party's' in Downing Street, It is a shame because the response of the government and the health service with regards to Covid and getting vaccines to whoever wants one is just an amazing feat and the fact that we can take a LFT and get the result in a few moments would have been unthinkable - we are ahead of so many countries globally, enough I hope to share our vaccines with other countries. Also I hate to say it but if we had been part of the EU we would have been stuffed, our government was free to buy vaccines without being part of the block.

WorriedMumsDontSleep · 19/01/2022 21:48

Maybe Tory has different connotations depending on where you live. Where I live it is only ever used negatively to try and shame people into voting differently. I did used to do this a lot I am afraid, it's not a nice or mature thing to do.

VelvetChairGirl · 19/01/2022 21:48

what amazes me is not only how many people here forget all the gender woo woo legislation was put in place by the Tories.

but that if they actually claimed they would not allow self ID legislation to pass as part of their manifesto, many of you actually believe thy will stick to their words, considering operation red meat (code name for gammon?) is essentially all the promises they didnt keep last time, thrown out again as promises to try and save their skin you dont have to have a particularly long memory to know what the tories are like.

TooBigForMyBoots · 19/01/2022 21:50

What most people have said is, that, whilst they are fully aware that the conservatives are no friend to women and started the whole GRC nonsense, they are the only party that has backtracked.

They haven't backtracked. And they, with their 80 seat majority haven't got rid of it. The right wing press have kept quite quiet about this while shouting about MPs from other parties. This is, in part, responsible for people forgetting the Tories are responsible for the threat from Self ID and they alone have the power to get shot of it.

incywincyspiders · 19/01/2022 21:52

@RufustheFloralmissingreindeer

I am a bit gobsmacked that some people honestly think that saying the word tory means you are being belittling and rude
People more outraged at the name we use for them rather than their actions and that says it all, quite frankly.

Just as well ive never done that…I’m glad you’ve stopped doing it

But yes I agree that it must have different connotations depending on location

Its the only thing i can think of to explain why some people see tory as a bad word and others (who vote tory) dont

PoshWatchShitShoes · 19/01/2022 21:53

Boris is despicable. I'd only ever vote Conservative though. I'll abstain and spoil my ballot if he's the party leader.

ItsCoachBombay · 19/01/2022 21:53

I voted Tory last time. Because I didn't want Jeremy Corbyn and unpopular opinion I didn't mind Theresa May. Was she fantastic, no, wash she palatable and ok, yes.

Next time however after the shit show that has been the Johnson Shambles and the fact that the entire cabinet and majority of Tory MP's at present seem like slimey scrotums, I won't be voting Tory unless they elect Johnny Mercer as leader, he seems nice

I don't like Kier Starmer and can't figure out WTF Labour are about these days, Lib Dems are dying and I don't think they have anybody to actually stand.

So I'll be voting Plaid Cymru. I don't want to spoil my ballot so I'll go with Plaid, they are pretty middle ground and highly unlikely to win. Then I can't be blamed for fuck all. 🤣

Noisyprat · 19/01/2022 21:56

Previously I have voted Conservative, although I didn't at the last election as I could see Johnson for who he is. As is often quoted on here, when someone shows you who they are, believe them. I didn't like what I saw/read and I was right.

I struggle with NOT voting though, so I spoilt my ballot paper. Childish perhaps but I couldn't vote for any of the other parties either.

The trans issue is big for me, I won't vote Labour, Liberal or Green unless they change their stance i.e acknowledge that they know what a woman is and put in place policy that protects women's rights. I also won't vote Conservative unless I am sure they will stand up for women's rights.

Finally I am deeply unhappy with how the Conservative party are handling the Boris Johnson situation. It is clear that it about protecting the party rather than what is best for the country. I know that all parties do this however I have never seen this so 'in my face' as now. It is highlighting what a shocking mess the country is in.

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 19/01/2022 21:56

Oooh though worriedmum ive just googled it and in ireland (apparently…google isn’t always my friend ) it was used as an insult back in 1678

So thats very interesting

WorriedMumsDontSleep · 19/01/2022 21:57

They haven't backtracked. And they, with their 80 seat majority haven't got rid of it.

No, I know. But Labour are actively pursuing it and hunting down GC members of their own party like bloodhounds.

It's a paupers choice. I didn't say it was a good one or an easy one. I don't know which choice is best, but I feel voting Labour would condone their pursuit of self Id.

VelvetChairGirl · 19/01/2022 21:57

Tory means a bandit, an outlaw, a thief. the tories have been called tory since the 1600s the conservative royalists. its well deserved.

and I think most famously used at peterloo, where the murdering government troops were called "tories on horseback".

if you dont like being associated with it, then dont vote tory, they have always been the enemy of the working classes, they are the landed gentry and they work only for the landed gentry always have.

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 19/01/2022 21:58

Well the word had its roots in an irish word and was used as a political insult…back in 1678

Perfectlystill · 19/01/2022 21:58

Yes because the opposition are far, far worse. Anti-semitism, cosying up to Chinese spies - what Labour get up to makes a few drunken garden parties look irrelevant.

VelvetChairGirl · 19/01/2022 22:05

@Perfectlystill

Yet Johnson accepted money from Russians and put one in the house of lords, but thats ok because the tory press minimized that so you should too.

dont read stories like this whatever you do!

Indeed, well deserved, the party made for the criminal rich, by the criminal rich.

Hardly surprising many Tory supporters say Boris breaking the law is irrelevant......
