They're really ok. Certainly not worse than McDonalds or your local greasy spoon.

@NoLongerTroels as a fellow coeliac I feel I must let you know that the veggie dipper meal at McDonald’s is gluten free! It’s that strange thing where a chain combines its vegetarian option with its gf option, but I like them — they taste like a primary school veggie burger before fake meat was a thing.

whymewhyme · 14/01/2022 21:28

Ours is lovely and the foods lovely

StarsAreWishes · 14/01/2022 21:28

I’m amazed at people saying they are in nice buildings. Our local one looks like a dilapidated squat.

poolblue · 14/01/2022 21:30

Poached eggs are always perfectly cooked

ParsleySageRosemary · 14/01/2022 21:30

Wetherspoons are very useful when you visit a new town or city. I can guarantee being able to sit down and feed the kids something they’ll eat somewhere dry and warm. Some are a bit rougher than others, depending on the city and locale, but you use your eyes and judge the risk don’t you. They’re always busy so clearly not everyone is snobby about them.

ShadowGirls · 14/01/2022 21:31

They attract a certain type of person

Onlinedilema · 14/01/2022 21:32

I think they are a mix.
Some definitely better than others.
You don't have to work for the toilets though that's a given. In fact the toilets are nicer than the actual pub in lots of them.
Where I used to work the Wetherspoons there was an absolute shithole it was like Beirut I'm not joking. Full of drunken, swearing older men who stood in the doorway smoking, vile. It made MacDonalds look like the Ritz.

ghostmouse · 14/01/2022 21:34

Mines full of alcoholics and druggies.
Wouldn’t set foot in there on my own. Foods nice though. It’s got a reputation in my town as being a bit of a shit hole. The one in the next town is a lot nicer though.

Personally I think they’re very hit and miss

DynamiteFilledRadish · 14/01/2022 21:34

@ShadowGirls

What type of person is that?
Longdistance · 14/01/2022 21:34

I’ve been to a few in nice buildings. I love a spoons. I’d quite happily ignore the clientele tbh. The deals are pretty decent.
This has actually reminded me that we won a pub quiz a few months back in a spoons and we won a £25 voucher. We haven’t spent it yet.

RainingYetAgain · 14/01/2022 21:37

We stopped using them because of Tim Martin's vociferous support for Brexit I don't need to spend money in his establishments. There are other companies I don't use for the same reason..
His behaviour towards his staff over Covid reinforced the boycott for me .
It's a shame, he has taken over some old buildings and preserved them but it doesn't make up for the other things

Lovemusic33 · 14/01/2022 21:37

It is what it is. If you want a cheap meal then it’s ideal but don’t expect 5* food.

We go occasionally, the kids like their pizzas and you get a free drink so win win 😬.

TabithaTittlemouse · 14/01/2022 21:39

I’m not snobby about it I just think it’s shit.

I don’t eat in Mac Donald’s either and we don’t have greasy spoon cafés near me.

saraclara · 14/01/2022 21:39

@Stellaris22

I don't go to Wetherspoons because I'm a snob, I don't go because I don't have a short memory.

CEO is vile and treated his staff atrociously when pubs were closed. I won't support a business that doesn't value its employees.

He didn't. As someone has already mentioned, he didn't say or do any of the things that he was accused of, and virtually every newspaper and media outlet had to issue retractions. Which of course were hidden away.

I hate the man's politics, but I hate false news more. He actually treated his staff very well during Covid.

Momicrone · 14/01/2022 21:40

Dynamite, male lushes who are escaping family life

amiafreakofnature · 14/01/2022 21:40

Their eggs benedict is the rankest thing I ever did taste 🤢

amiafreakofnature · 14/01/2022 21:41

Think we've found Tim up there 👆🏻

notacooldad · 14/01/2022 21:45

Well not sure I'd hang out in my local weatherspoons as a woman on my own
I suppose it depends on what your local is like. Our town centre one can get a bit rough at certain times and really busy and fun at other times. I don't mind going in by myself mid afternoon after I've been to the cinema ( alone) with my gin and tonic!

SmallPrawnEnergy · 14/01/2022 21:45

@DynamiteFilledRadish

Again, no he didn't. Every single one of the published press corrections are available online.

I mean, he didn’t tell them to go work in Tesco but he did u turn (only after public outcry and pressure from unions) on paying employees. You could forgive small businesses for not having the money to pay staff until furlough money was in the business bank account, but not a someone worth nearly half a billion.

He was all also a spectacular bellend about Brexit and immigrants.

Wetherspoons themselves are a love hate for most people I reckon. Food and drink is cheap. Food is also hit and miss (why are the chips so fucking terrible there?). The sticky tables are grim. Why are they all still sticky? Even after being cleaned, it’s like the cleaning products are so potent they disintegrate the varnish. They’ve done good things for CAMRA but drove a lot of small non chain pubs to breaking point.

Fatgalslim · 14/01/2022 21:45

The Velvet Coaster is quite nice in Blackpool, stopped in for a burger and a coffee on a walk from Lytham a couple of years ago

Tinkletwat · 14/01/2022 21:47

Friend worked in the kitchen as a student Envy I'm lucky to be able to choose quality over quantity when it comes to food & beverages plus Tim Martin is an eijit.

SmallPrawnEnergy · 14/01/2022 21:47

@saraclara He actually treated his staff very well during Covid.
After he was forced to by public outcry and union pressure you mean?

I wouldn’t go into either of those either. Don’t judge anyone else who does though
DockOTheBay · 14/01/2022 21:49

The difference is alcohol. Not many leery pissed blokes at Mcdonalds, or stinky daytime drunks at the greasy spoon.

Hmmmwhatnametochoose · 14/01/2022 21:50

@HeadToToesNo

I'm snobby about McDonalds too Grin
Me too. And KFC. Although I've never set foot in either...
