To not understand snobbery against Wetherspoons?

They're really ok. Certainly not worse than McDonalds or your local greasy spoon.

Can't beat their breakfast. Then the trek to the toilet burns up half the calories you have just consumed

DynamiteFilledRadish · 14/01/2022 21:13

He did not treat his staff badly. This is such nonsense. A great many newspapers had to publish retractions when it was explicitly proven that he did not say or even insinuate what was plastered all over their pages.

Jackofallsorts · 14/01/2022 21:13

Best thing about them is they don't allow dogs in many of their pubs. Bliss.

Stellaris22 · 14/01/2022 21:13

I don't go to Wetherspoons because I'm a snob, I don't go because I don't have a short memory.

CEO is vile and treated his staff atrociously when pubs were closed. I won't support a business that doesn't value its employees.

HalfwomanHalfcookie · 14/01/2022 21:14

I don't like their chips.

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 14/01/2022 21:15

Spoons very popular with college and Uni students

You can get a pint of lager for £2 (or even £1.70 in my son's Uni city)

You can get cheap pizza or chips

It's heaving with young people!

Cheap and cheerful

FudgeSundae · 14/01/2022 21:15

Well the one near me reeks of stale sugary alcohol, you stick to the floor as you walk, it’s dark all day with neon lighting, and hard drinkers in there from 9am. Certainly not clean or cheerful or airy.

thepeopleversuswork · 14/01/2022 21:15

I’ve had blindingly good steaks in there - much to my surprise.

But aside from that I am not a fan.

The CEO is a complete cunt, the decor is hideous. It’s cheap and that’s about all it’s going for it otherwise.

I'm snobby about McDonald's too. Happy to support greasy spoons though; supporting independent businesses, innit.
Somuddled · 14/01/2022 21:17

Why do people jump to snobby when others just don't like somewhere or something? It is what it is, cheap. That comes with some drawbacks which. for some people, don't outweigh the savings. For me, one of thoes drawbacks is the high likelihood of groups of drunk men in the afternoon.

Notoironing · 14/01/2022 21:18

Wetherspoons have some really great pubs in terms of the buildings. An amazing one in Ramsgate which backs directly onto the beach.

Luredbyapomegranate · 14/01/2022 21:18

@Tal45

You didn't raise the bar very high there though did you? I don't think people who are snobby about Wetherspoon are likely to be raving about Maccy D's or their local greasy spoon either.
Yep.
AuntieMarys · 14/01/2022 21:19

Britvic tonic. Bleugh.

Exactly this.

Again, no he didn't. Every single one of the published press corrections are available online.

There was an in depth thread on this full of strongly held opinions on both sides!

flippertyop · 14/01/2022 21:21

Really? The tables are sticky, there's no music and people with obvious alcohol issues queue up there before opening at 11am. Not sure why you don't get this? Suppose it depends what you are used to - perhaps your standards aren't very high 😂

jerometheturnipking · 14/01/2022 21:21

I loved spoons when I was looking for underage drinking and somewhere cheap as a student. Beer and a burger for a stupidly cheap price - lovely.

These days if I want oven chips and a frozen burger I can do that myself at home. With nicer beer, and nicer burgers.

Forgotthespuds · 14/01/2022 21:22

My local spoons is nice. I take my kids there on Thursdays for curry night. It's cheap, the curry is tasty & it's walking distance so I can have a couple beers & walk home

Georgeskitchen · 14/01/2022 21:22

I love 'spoons good pint of lager at reasonable price. Only problem is you always have to walk about 14 miles to the toilet 😍😂😂

3scape · 14/01/2022 21:22

Owner is a dick who fucks up things for employees solely for his entertainment. There are better pubs, that aren't quite so awful to be seen in.

Ohyesiam · 14/01/2022 21:24

I have a friend who work there, I went in to connect her once and there were a selection of people right inside the door who looked so ( long term) picked in alcohol that they resembled reptiles. In my greasy spoon there’s just nice Greek people

MadeOfStarStuff · 14/01/2022 21:26

I love spoons dinners and their drinks are cheap.

The only thing I object to is the vile owner

LubaLuca · 14/01/2022 21:26

I admire the respect they show for lovely old buildings, but that Brexit-themed scarecrow is not getting a penny out of me. I don't think not wanting cheap booze and meal deals is snobby anyway - I'd rather sit in the park with a Greggs than join the all-day boozers.

onedayoranother · 14/01/2022 21:26

The Wetherspoons I know is a well known place for picking up some weed. And it looks pretty seedy too.
