To not understand snobbery against Wetherspoons?

They're really ok. Certainly not worse than McDonalds or your local greasy spoon.
@Elphame I can’t believe you felt unsafe in a Weatherspoons during the day.
It must have been terrifying to see all those ghastly working class people. And be so close to them too. Bet they smelt too. Yuk. Poor you.
Good grief - are you a fiction writer in real life? You have one hell of an imagination!

the80sweregreat · 20/01/2022 18:37

I like the prices and the food, but it does gall me that my money is going to Tim Martin who I really don't like.
Our one isn't that clean either and the loos are up in the gods so I don't go very often!
It's not a snobby thing at all, the local greasy spoon cafe is far superior and even cheaper and not a chain , so happy to go there instead.

KeepingAnOpenMind · 20/01/2022 18:39

Remainiacs and Covid Cultists hate Weatherspoon's but most normal people don’t have a particularly strong opinion about the chain.

Laughing at the irony of you username. Doesn't seem to be much open mindedness going on in your posts 😂😂

In some areas it's the only place that does a vegan option, so they get my custom for that reason. Have never been in one during the day or early evening when there's been any drunkeness or problems and would go there and feel safe as a lone female.

Norgie · 20/01/2022 19:47

I think it depends on the area whether it's going to be a rough one or not.
I've been in some lovely ones, but I've also been in some terrible ones.
That said, I love my local one, it's one of the nicer ones. It's clean and tidy and I can have my fill of refills from the coffee machine while my DH has his pints. We often have lunch there.
I think spoons is a bit like marmite, you either love it or hate it.

Roominmyhouse · 20/01/2022 19:52

Our local one was alright, good for cheap food and booze when I was younger. I wouldn’t go in one now, the last time I did about 3/4 years ago there was a load of pro brexit propaganda on the table. I don’t want to put money in the pockets of people who printed that shit and I think Tim Martin is a twat.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 20/01/2022 19:53

@flippertyop

Really? The tables are sticky, there's no music and people with obvious alcohol issues queue up there before opening at 11am. Not sure why you don't get this? Suppose it depends what you are used to - perhaps your standards aren't very high 😂
No music would be a plus for me.
TheGoogleMum · 20/01/2022 19:56

Hey I'm not too good for weatherspoons but I won't go anymore because I don't like the CEO

Livpool · 20/01/2022 20:03

My parents like it because they are cheap (Wetherspoons not my DPs!) and they can go for a mid-afternoon drink now they are retired.

It is one of the few places i can go with DH and DS and we can all eat a proper meal.
DS is 6 and loves their jalfrezi.

My friend works there and said it annoys her when (mostly) remainders (I am one too as is she) moan about the owner. She has worked there for a few years and said it is perfect for her to top up her wages from her 'day' job

LakieLady · 20/01/2022 20:24

Tim Martin is a Brexit-supporting loon who now wants visas introduced so he can hire staff from the EU to ease staff shortages in his pubs. He also thought pubs should stay open during lockdowns and has a reputation for treating staff appallingly.

No way am I letting a twat that make a penny of profit out of me. I wouldn't go in a Wetherspoons even if it was the only pub in town.

I also prefer to use independent pubs or those run by independent breweries wherever possible, and to eat food that's cooked on the premises, rather than what are effectively reheated ready meals.

I once arranged to meet a friend for lunch at a pub in Brighton, not realising it had become part of the Wetherspoons chain. The sticky carpet was grim enough, but the stench of urinal cake pervading the whole bar was beyond vile and most of the clientele looked like they could do with visiting a de-lousing station. We hadn't even got halfway through our first drink before we decided to go elsewhere.

Credenhill22 · 20/01/2022 20:28

Been in loads of weatherspoons all over the UK...I would say most of them are clean and with good service...
The one in Harlow in Essex is the worst ever...a complete dump...a terrible looking building and the inside isn't great either.
