They're really ok. Certainly not worse than McDonalds or your local greasy spoon.

RobotValkyrie · 14/01/2022 21:51

We used to go there regularly before the Brexit referendum (in the less grotty ones which happened to cook a decent breakfast)
Never again. He doesn't want people like me around, he doesn't need my money. There's always other pubs.

heyitsthistle · 14/01/2022 21:51

@MaxNormal

It's not that I'm snobby about it, it's just a bit shit and so is McDonalds. But each to their own.
That's how I feel.

I'm lucky that my closest Spoons is pretty nice. I like that the majority of them are in interesting buildings.

Broblem · 14/01/2022 21:52

Our local one is a bit rough. Have been attacked in there myself (punched in the face), and have witnessed similar incidents.

Hadn’t been for years but went around the time of the referendum. The Union Jacks everywhere were a bit much (not least as I’m in Wales), and the pro-Brexit leaflets on every table were a bit much.

The food is adequate for the most part, but it’s very much a last resort for me.

Broblem · 14/01/2022 21:53

Apparently I also say a bit much, a bit much.

Figgygal · 14/01/2022 21:55

The owner is a dick
They're typically filthy
The loos are always in another county
No atmosphere

McDonald's is shit too mind

IsaLating · 14/01/2022 21:55

I used to be a fan. Good selection of food that my parents, friends, kids could all find something they liked. Great value drinks. Many of them in lovely old buildings.

But Tim Scarecrow has made me boycott them.

Drunkpanda · 14/01/2022 21:56

Somewhere that isn't a take away style place and all the dc can eat something that isn't pizza for a reasonable price. Sufficient veggie options too. With children you can't be in late at night anyway probably feels different then.

its not snobbery exactly I am a poor single mum from a council estate and proud socialist (proper I dont vote starmer).

i wouldt set foot in the place its brexiteer and ukip/bnp/tory central ask full of gammon.

mrsm43s · 14/01/2022 21:59

I can't speak for all Wetherspoons, but the ones I've been in have been rough as fuck and full of alcoholics. The food is grim microwave meals or deep fried beige shit. Not good.

I also don't support the Tim Martin's views on Brexit or the way he treated his staff over Covid, and I'd rather not give him my money.

Atmywitsend29 · 14/01/2022 21:59

It's reheated rubbish, tastes terrible. And they grill their veggie sausages etc on the same grill as meat products.

Spoons was alright when I was 18 and in there getting hammered on cheap cocktails, but I'd never eat there again!

saraclara · 14/01/2022 22:00

@amiafreakofnature

Think we've found Tim up there 👆🏻
If you're referring to me, it would be an odd Tim Martin who posted saying that he hated his own politics.

I find him very unpleasant. But I have a certain sympathy for anyone misrepresented so egregiously, so thoroughly and in every corner of the media, that even now it seems as though 95% of people still believe something that never happened.

As far as Wetherspoons pubs are concerned, I used to be massively biased against them until I actually started going to them. Most of the ones I've been to are in stunningly renovated buildings, are really clean, and incredible value.
I'm sure there are some that have somewhat iffy clientele in some areas, but I do recognise that I was biased against them for no reason other than Brexit and my own snobbery.

VelvetChairGirl · 14/01/2022 22:02

and not ask

Alayalaya · 14/01/2022 22:02

the cheap prices of been in the one local to me attracts a lot of people to start drinking from early in the day who generally just sit there drinking cheap booze all day/every day

Yes this is what happens in the Wetherspoons near me. Lots of alcoholics and long term unemployed who start drinking and smoking from 8am onwards. Anti social behaviour is rife and has driven away neighbouring businesses who don’t want to be next door, especially in summer when people sit outside. It’s causing a problem with revitalising the high street because businesses won’t rent the shops nearby.

WindyState · 14/01/2022 22:03

Some are ok.

Some are properly shit.

The owner is a class-a bellend.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 14/01/2022 22:05

I would never drink in one. Apart from disliking the Brexit backing boss I don't think they treat their staff well. Our local one has a reputation for being a bit rough so I've never even gone inside.

My friend's son worked in one and was taken ill on a shift and taken off in an ambulance only to be sacked when he got back for being off sick

Crayzeefrog · 14/01/2022 22:05

Cheap and nasty .. plus too booze focussed to feel comfortable taking kids to

allgettingtoomuch · 14/01/2022 22:05

I hate it sorry 😩

dreamingbohemian · 14/01/2022 22:06

Their burgers are absolutely more shite than McDonalds ones

SuPerDoPer · 14/01/2022 22:07

I like the way they give an old building a new lease of life while retaining a lot of original features. In our town a crumbling old town hall that was pretty much good for nothing is now a well used building and keeping people using the town centre shops and amenities. They can have a cheap pub lunch after shopping instead of being stuck with the usual coffee shops and expensive real ale gastro pubs. I think they are great for the local high streets. Not my usual place to go drinking but we all have different preferences.

Molly499 · 14/01/2022 22:08

I’m sure that lots of people would not set foot in one, not because they are snobs, but because the food is so grim, surely we can all cook better at home if you want to eat that sort of greasy food.

Ok, so I’m being judgemental about the food but really, it’s sinking a bit low isn’t it?

RestingStitchFace · 14/01/2022 22:08

The ones near me have a reputation for being a bit fighty tbh. When my husband was younger a massive fight broke out and he had to escape out the back through the kitchen...

saraclara · 14/01/2022 22:12

To be fair, my actual local is way more fighty and grubby than any Wetherspoons I've been in. It's just smaller.

Sonex · 14/01/2022 22:13

I just don't find them that convivial. There are always some people with visible alcohol problems in them due to the cheaper prices and I find that a bit depressing. The decor's also a bit naff. I prefer to spend my limited free time in places that are a bit more aesthetically pleasing and relaxing and I'm happy to pay a bit more for my drinks for a better ambiance. I dont mind popping in with a crowd now and again but that's it.

C152 · 14/01/2022 22:14

That's a low bar for comparison...but yes, Wetherspoons really is worse than McDonalds or a greasy spoon.

SuPerDoPer · 14/01/2022 22:16

*its not snobbery exactly I am a poor single mum from a council estate and proud socialist (proper I dont vote starmer).

It's possible to be a snob and all those other things that you seem to think make your views more worthwhile than others. Plus calling people "gammon" is just as vile as any other nasty name.

I don't drink in wetherspoons either but I'm capable of being polite about it.
