To not understand snobbery against Wetherspoons?

They're really ok. Certainly not worse than McDonalds or your local greasy spoon.

Define 'snobbery' in this case please, OP?
StoneofDestiny · 20/01/2022 16:38

the rightwing ideology of Wetherspoon’s management has been visible during the pandemic. In March, Martin refused to close pubs until forced to by the lockdown, arguing it would do nothing to stop the spread of Covid-19. At the time, the number of cases of the virus was at about 400, rising to more than a thousand in the same week. Once Boris Johnson mandated the closure of pubs and restaurants, Martin said he couldn’t afford to pay staff before the introduction of a government scheme, encouraging around 40,000 workers to find work elsewhere. This prompted the involvement of the Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union and 90 MPs, and resulted in the vandalism of one pub in Crystal Palace, south London, where activists spray-painted “Pay your staff” across its windows. Martin agreed to pay staff when the furlough scheme was announced The Guardian

I'd avoid it like the plague - not snobbery, just standards..

crazyjinglist · 20/01/2022 16:49

Well the CEO is a dick.

But anyway, since when is choosing to go somewhere that's nicer 'snobbery'? I've been in lovely greasy spoons - great full English, proper brown tea and a bit of character about them. I'd pretty much always rather go to an independent café than a chain, whether it's the posher end of the spectrum or the less posh. I never go to Costa, Starbucks or McDonald's etc either, unless I'm at a motorway service station and have limited choice.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 20/01/2022 16:54

Don’t think it’s snobbery. Some just don’t like it, some object to Tim Martin. Before I knew about TM I’d have gone in occasionally if it was all that was on offer. Wouldn’t now.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 20/01/2022 16:55

Used to go when I was young though

notacooldad · 20/01/2022 16:55

Spoons was great last week when I was in a normally busy resort but at night time the restaurants and grills were shut. There was only a couple of takeaways available.
I reasonable meal with a beer for less than 8 quid, friendly staff, tables cleared immediately, good service. There was a few locals in to chat to that were pleasant and helpful and I fidnt get hassle for being a lone female as i have in some other places in the recent past ( come on love, smile and other bullshit)
As a family we meet at spoons with other ( not football !) Supporters before and after a game and always welcomed.

HesterShaw1 · 20/01/2022 16:57

I've nothing against them as establishments. I've got everything against the tosspot CEO. They went on the Shit List at the start of the pandemic

hinchi123 · 20/01/2022 16:58

I'd happily go to Spoons as it's fine for what you pay if only the owner wasn't a massive horrorbag Smile

etaussi · 20/01/2022 17:00

Depends which one you go into.

I'm pretty critical of all of them but some of the central London ones are pretty fucking swish all things considered

The one in our local town couldn't be further from that though, it opens at 8am and starts filling up with absolute fucking specimens. You keep yourself to yourself Grin

Overall I think you get what you pay for. I would prefer to be in some wanky craft ale independent but also 3 drinks for a fiver has got it's place

XenoBitch · 20/01/2022 17:02

I like them. Pre-Covid, I would spend hours in them doodling and drinking bottomless tea (£1.25 for the mug and that was it).
Cheap booze, and I like the ale and gin festival things they have too.
I absolutely detest their plates though. Nothing looks appetising on them.

FrankGrillosWrist · 20/01/2022 17:03

I agree with you OP. Our local’s quite decent. When we couldn’t go abroad we stayed at Premier Inn & ate at Wetherspoons all over the place, I enjoyed it for what it was & came across a few harmless characters. I’d’ve liked to have stayed at Wetherspoons, but I find some of them to be a bit creepy. Wetherspoons gives the ordinary wo/man a chance to have a cheap pint & something to eat, I wouldn’t take that away from anyone.

Lolamento · 20/01/2022 17:15

I used to go as a student like 25 years ago for two meals for fiver.

NotMeekNotObedient · 20/01/2022 17:33

They don't realise that almost all chain restaurant food is equally as processed and microwaved.

I was pleasantly surprised the last time I went in. Some of the London ones are in absolutely lovely buildings.

DillonPanthersTexas · 20/01/2022 17:39

Yeah I have certainly seen some iffy Spoons full of scumbags. Have also been inside some other Spoons located in beautifully converted buildings, that are clean, well run, decent ales and generally perfectly decent.

There are so many of them it's hard to take a view of the while chain based on a handful of visits

Elphame · 20/01/2022 17:42

The queue outside as they open of men desperate to get their first pint of the day says it all for me really.

Cheap drink and cheap food. I went in our local one once with a friend and we felt very unsafe and didn't stay.

KeepingAnOpenMind · 20/01/2022 17:44

I like the chain but it’s a shame as an earlier poster pointed out that it is dog unfriendly.
People on Mumsnet won’t approve because they think it’s chavvy and Mumsnet is a very snobbish middle class forum.

That really isnt the case everywhere!

pointythings · 20/01/2022 17:46

I prefer to support local independents and go less often. And the owner's stance on Brexit and support for the Tories is also enough to drive me away. If I want a cheap bacon bap, I'll make my own.

KeepingAnOpenMind · 20/01/2022 17:47

@Elphame I can’t believe you felt unsafe in a Weatherspoons during the day.
It must have been terrifying to see all those ghastly working class people. And be so close to them too. Bet they smelt too. Yuk. Poor you.

anniegun · 20/01/2022 17:48

They are the type of pub where you wipe your feet on the way out

crazyjinglist · 20/01/2022 17:52

Offensive generalisation. 'People on Mumsnet' are not one homogenous mass. There are lots of MNers who are not at all mc. There are also lots of mc people who aren't snobbish. And having a preference isn't the same as 'disapproving' or being a snob.

The people saying they don't like Wetherspoons are just expressing an opinion about a pub chain. Whereas you're stereotyping and sneering about a massive forum of actual individual human beings.

femfemlicious · 20/01/2022 17:56

I went in there on saturday and got a glass of wine for £1.69Xmas Grin. Its a really rough area but i was very comfortable as a lone woman. Lots of older couples and no roughians

This person on mumsnet doesn’t approve because her husband runs a pub opposite a Spoons - he has to deal with the absolute scumbags who fall out of that pub at most hours of the day looking for a fight,
OneTC · 20/01/2022 18:03

They queue outside for coffee at my local one. They all meet up every day, drink the 1.20 coffee for a few hours, have lunch, have a couple of pints and then leave before it fills up with the night crew

CraftyGin · 20/01/2022 18:32

I like Spoons. They have the best app.

The morning drinkers remind me that I am not an alcoholic.
