I am 38 and I want one of those shopping trolleys that are basically a bag on a frame on wheels. I don't drive (don't start, tried both manual and automatic and can't get to grips with it also can't afford it) and I also don't like taking public transport so I tend to walk everywhere. But I also have hypermobility and during pandemic heights buggered myelbow carrying heavy shopping.
All in having a trolley would be very useful but I can't get passed being embarrassed about using one. Does anyone here have one that isnt of pension age?

Yabu you are still young and should put up with carrying everything it's extra exercise.

Yanbu go and get one they are fantastic. Age be damned.

I borrowed my mum's during the first lockdown when I was doing shopping for her and myself. I was extremely reluctant to give it back. I loved it! I say get one!

harrystylestaylorswift · 13/01/2022 16:18

@harrystylestaylorswift

I see lot of students, mainly international ones, using them for their supermarket shop. I think it must be a UK thing for only old people to use them. I'd love one as I hate carrying loads of heavy bags.
Lots*

Embarrassment is something we inflict on ourselves by worrying what others think about us. If I didn't have a car and had to walk to the shop I'd get one.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 13/01/2022 16:19

I have a boring grey shopping trolley and I love it. Shopping trolleys became a bit of a "thing" early the pandemic when people couldn't just drop in to the shops whenever they wanted to pick up a couple of items. I got some envious remarks about mine!

Snowiscold · 13/01/2022 16:20

@Pleaseuniverseplease

I'd not use one. I'm early 40s and I feel I would draw attention to myself with one. There's a woman who is my age who walks up my road with one. I always notice her and think she looks ridiculous. I'm sorry, just being honest.
Do you think the same about wheeled suitcases when travelling?
Vicliz24 · 13/01/2022 16:21

I have a beautiful vintage wicker one . I got it when I had a shoulder surgery and it truly saved my life . I wouldn't be without it now . I made gingham lining for it and named her Fifi

topayornottopay · 13/01/2022 16:22

I got a funky looking one about 10 years ago, so late 20s/early 30s. Its brilliant if you've lots of shopping to carry.

I use it when I do the Christmas gift shopping too. Way better than lugging loads of bags round the shops trying to look at stuff.

I always seem to get envious looks from the older blokes who are xmas shopping with their wives and look to be left carrying all the bags.

Emerald5hamrock · 13/01/2022 16:23

They're very popular around here it takes longer to navigate one way streets by car.

Topbird29 · 13/01/2022 16:23

I've got a folder away one, so goes in rucksack on way to the shop, then either unfold when in queue for till to put stuff on belt, or unfold after paid in a quiet space out of the way (and shopping still in shop trolley). Is not as rigid as the non fold ones though, and can be a bit more likely to tip slightly when pulled. Got it when no longer used the pram/buggy. That had huuuggge basket at bottom. Miss that Smile

ponkydonkey · 13/01/2022 16:23

My friend doesn't drive and she has one!

I do remember my mums one, god it was awful dragging that thing back from Begam or was it Bejam full of frozen food!
I think that's what spurred me on to pass my driving test 🤣

But loads of people have them at our local posh market..., it's eco now so go for it

kwiksavenofrillsusername · 13/01/2022 16:26

I like them. I used one when I was early 20s and lived in a city, so needed to use public transport to get my shop home. It caught on with a couple of my friends who ended up getting them too! Glad to see it’s becoming a trend as they are so handy when you don’t drive.

Etsy has some fun designs if you don’t want to go the tartan route.

Pleaseuniverseplease · 13/01/2022 16:28

I'm fine with a wheeled suitcase.
The shopping trolley I think to me is something I associate with being elderly and perhaps I don't want to think about or give in to ageingConfused.
Everyone I see pushing them also always looks miserable too, trudging along the street like they're doing some huge chore.

BarkminsterBlue · 13/01/2022 16:29

I have literally just seen a TikTok of Anaïs Gallagher (21-year-old daughter of Noel) showing off her new trolley. I think they are becoming hipster cool in the way that bumbags came back a few years ago.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 13/01/2022 16:29

My mum used to wheel the bag of washing home from the launderette in the seat of the pushchair that we had outgrown. Now that was embarrasing. Grin

Confrontayshunme · 13/01/2022 16:29

I have a huge wicker one and I actually get compliments every time I use it! And have been using it since age 34!

gogohm · 13/01/2022 16:30

Lots of students have them in modern designs

SirVixofVixHall · 13/01/2022 16:31

I had one at 20 OP ! A lovely wicker one. It was great for lugging home heavy shopping -I lived a long walk from the supermarket.

LunaLoveFood · 13/01/2022 16:32

Loads of the students in my area have then. They're not allowed cars on campus so use them to carry their shopping from the local supermarket back to halls.

ScruffGin · 13/01/2022 16:33

I used to have one when I lived in Australia for going to the market, I got laughed at by my friends, but I didn't care! Grin

Find a gorgeous one and don't care what anyone what thinks!

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 13/01/2022 16:35

Dh and I went to the BBC Good Food show and loads of people were carting around really stylish shopping trolleys. It was the first time we had seen non-tartan ones. This was 18 years ago.

I wouldn't be embarrassed about it, seriously. You need one, get one. There are some incredibly beautiful ones out there.

SlidingInto2022sDMs · 13/01/2022 16:35

I always notice her and think she looks ridiculous.
I'm sorry, just being honest.

Lol! It's much more ridiculous to think someone looks ridiculous using a shopping trolley for convenience and comfort.

San141 · 13/01/2022 16:39

My mum gave me one as a 'joke' for my 40th..it is honestly the best present she has ever given me!! My friend used to laugh when I took it out, but when she saw a felt how easy it was she got one too!

maddy68 · 13/01/2022 16:41

I live in a different country. EVERYONE has an old lady shopper.

thingymaboob · 13/01/2022 16:48

This advert comes up on my Instagram all the time. They're called radunionuk- I'd get one of them.
