I am 38 and I want one of those shopping trolleys that are basically a bag on a frame on wheels. I don't drive (don't start, tried both manual and automatic and can't get to grips with it also can't afford it) and I also don't like taking public transport so I tend to walk everywhere. But I also have hypermobility and during pandemic heights buggered myelbow carrying heavy shopping.
All in having a trolley would be very useful but I can't get passed being embarrassed about using one. Does anyone here have one that isnt of pension age?

Yabu you are still young and should put up with carrying everything it's extra exercise.

Yanbu go and get one they are fantastic. Age be damned.

I couldn't care less what people think. Why does it matter? I have a dodgy back and using one of these saves me a lot of pain.
My friend uses one to lug her yoga stuff about. We're both a good way off pension age.

I worked in Paris for a couple of years early 1980s and I noticed that most of the women used a shopping trolley for their groceries. Instead of struggling along the street stooping under the weight of numerous plastic shopping bags cutting into their hands, there were these elegant, well dressed women in their fashionable outfits and high heels pulling along their shopping carts without breaking a sweat. So when I relocated to London a few years later I remembered those women when I was struggling up Kensington High street after my weekly trip to Safeways and I promptly bought myself a shopping trolley. If it's good enough for a Parisienne then it's definitely good enough for me and you Op, and if I ever have to give up driving then I will definitely get another one.

forgot to say, I've a couple of these now for the car boot, and I bring them into the supermarket with me and load them straight from the checkout - very handy (but they wouldn't be great for walking home, only good for dragging from boot of car into house)

Those rad trolleys are expensive. Who wants to pay £140 for a trolley when you can get one in Argos for £20.
I have the plain black one which so far has been going strong for 5 years.

fjernelse · 13/01/2022 15:51

I remember my mum having one when I was a child. She was in her 20s at the time. If you aren't using a car, makes sense rather than hauling shopping bags around.

Hayisforhorse · 13/01/2022 15:52

Get one, strong and fit DH (40) uses his quite happily and they're very common in part of Europe. Only thing I'd say though is the the one-sidedness can be an issue with hypermobility. Personally I find a rucksack better as I am not twisting to one side to pull it.

Politics4me · 13/01/2022 15:53

You get one, I have just been for walk with a walking stick. Broad daylight, people saw me. It was only round the block.

8lue8ird · 13/01/2022 15:56

I have one! I got it for my mum who decided she didn't have the nerve to use it but its bloody brilliant! Get it

Holothane · 13/01/2022 15:58

I’ve got a Sholley one they are a godsend, I’m 55 crippled with arthritis I love it, I’ve had shopping trolleys for years.

TomDaleysCardigan · 13/01/2022 16:01

Not sure if mine counts. Olli Ella big luggy wheeled basket? It's fantastic

gillsareforfish · 13/01/2022 16:02

As you have hypermobility you may be better off getting a trolley that you can push rather than one that you pull along behind you, that way you'll put less strain on your spine, shoulder, elbow and wrist.

Sholley do some really nice ones, they are expensive but worth it

I got one years ago when we only had 1 car, between that and a rucksack could do the weekly shop if necessary. Great when walking to beach, could fit picnic buckets and spades etc in it, much easier than trying to carry everything.

LaChanticleer · 13/01/2022 16:05

I have one. I don’t drive and I like to walk. During the first lockdown I bought one as I didn’t use any home delivery slots with my supermarket as it seemed unfair as I was able-bodied and only just clinically vulnerable. Do I could cope and going out once a week to the supermarket was a treat! (Remember that weird world in March 2020?)

LaChanticleer · 13/01/2022 16:06

Although I am probably someone you’d think of as “old” but I don’t care ( I’m still working and fitter than most 20 year olds). It’s changed my shopping life. I love my old lady trolley.

DaisyWaldron · 13/01/2022 16:10

I've used one since I was in my twenties. I love a good Rolser trolley. They are stylish and practical.

Derbee · 13/01/2022 16:10

I can’t believe how nice some shopping trolleys are! I’ve never considered one, as I can’t imagine when I’d use it. But I love these...

Pleaseuniverseplease · 13/01/2022 16:10

I'd not use one.
I'm early 40s and I feel I would draw attention to myself with one.
There's a woman who is my age who walks up my road with one. I always notice her and think she looks ridiculous.
I'm sorry, just being honest.

Moon22 · 13/01/2022 16:10

It's only a shopping bag. I would definitely get one.(i would also quite like one of those rain proof hair covers popular with grannies!) Your back will thank you, if not now, in 10 years time!
Before I had my car, I used to do online shop for bigger, heavier items- freezer stuff, tins, cleaning priducts etc and just go local for fresh fruit and veg!- also saved me money as wasn't in the supermarket constantly doing small shops!
Definitely get your bag. What could anyone possibly think about it/you? It's a bag. Suitcase would definitely be weirder looking- plus the wheels would be broke before you know it, they're designed for airports, not bring dragged to shops!

AmigoingcrZy · 13/01/2022 16:10

I used one at uni. Its a hassle to carry shopping no matter how old or able you are. Lots of students used them and noone would look twice if you had one

AllAmericanGirl · 13/01/2022 16:13

I wanted one and DH said he'd be embarrassed about it but I will definitely get one in next couple of years.

LaChanticleer · 13/01/2022 16:14

I always notice her and think she looks ridiculous.

I think this says more about you than the sensible woman saving her back, and also not using a car (thus doing her bit to save the planet as well).

Eukanuba · 13/01/2022 16:15

My 18 year old DD has one at Uni for her ' big shop ' no - one bats an eyelid , she loves it - far easier than having to balance bags for life .

1frenchfoodie · 13/01/2022 16:16

I was in 20s when I got mine (which is still going 15years later). They are so convenient I couldn’t care about any judgements. As others say, they are more trendy now in any case.

Roosk · 13/01/2022 16:17

What kind of attention is it you feel you’d be drawing?
harrystylestaylorswift · 13/01/2022 16:18

I see lot of students, mainly international ones, using them for their supermarket shop. I think it must be a UK thing for only old people to use them. I'd love one as I hate carrying loads of heavy bags.
