Do you shower before going to the gym in the morning?

For those of you who get up and go straight to the gym; do you shower at home beforehand?

I always jump in to the shower for a quick freshen up before leaving the house and heading to the gym. I then have a “proper” shower, including hair washing, after my gym session before getting in with my day.

There are some people at the gym who I actively avoid standing near as they have a “musty” smell and I don’t like to be around it.

So, AIBU to assume that it’s polite (can’t think of a better word) to shower before the gym even if it is the first thing you’re going to do that day?

Absolutely do not shower before my am gym class! I shower before bed so I know I don’t stink

ufucoffee · 10/01/2022 20:50

On the few times I've been to the gym in the morning I had a quick flannel wash and brushed my teeth. I wouldn't have a shower.

superram · 10/01/2022 20:51

I a) don’t get up early enough, b) no need to feel fresh to enter a stinky gym, c) waste of water and bad for skin washing too much. It’s a no from me!

MrsJBaptiste · 10/01/2022 20:51

Not here! If I'm up at 5.45 to go to the gym then I'm not getting in the shower first. I've generally had one the night before so I don't smell sweaty and musty (that's usually from unwashed clothes) so I get dressed, stick on deodorant, perfume and go.

MrsJBaptiste · 10/01/2022 20:52

Oh yes, will definitely brush my teeth too!

HandWash · 10/01/2022 20:53

Seems excessive to me.

I mostly shower at night, rather than the morning anyway.

BridgeFarmKefir · 10/01/2022 20:53

God no. Brush teeth, quick spray of deodorant and I'm out. Most classes I go to are 6.30/7- if I showered I'd have to be up even earlier and anything before 6am is unacceptable.

billyt · 10/01/2022 20:53

Doesn't matter where I'm going. I always allow enough time for a shower first.

AuntyBumBum · 10/01/2022 20:53

What are you talking about? Grin

How can you possibly complain about people smelling "musty" at the gym? Peak Mumsnet!
This must be a hoax.

TrophyWinner · 10/01/2022 20:53

If going to the gym is the first thing I'm doing, no I wouldn't shower. A quick wash and refresh the deodorant and off.

If I'm not going out until mid morning I'd shower.

On the basis that at the very least I showered yesterday morning, I really don't think I can smell that musty

SagittariusDwarf · 10/01/2022 20:54

Hell no.

madisonbridges · 10/01/2022 20:55

Yes.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/01/2022 20:56

Christ no. Doesn’t everyone smell when they get a bit sweaty?

I’m not sure you smell unclean if you don’t have a shower before going to the gym. Who can be fucked doing that? What a waste of time.🙄

Sparkai · 10/01/2022 20:58

Isn't the "musty" smell more likely to be unwashed gym wear? Ie people who wear it multiple times before washing?

Or I have a friend whose clothes often smell musty, I don't think they dry quickly enough after being washed

Soontobeoutnumbered3 · 10/01/2022 21:03

Maybe it’s clothes then rather than the actual person. It’s a musty fuggy smell, rather than sweat IYSWIM and some people smell of it on the way in to the gym before they’ve made it to the gym floor.

OP posts:
KatharinaRosalie · 10/01/2022 21:06

no way and I don't start smelling musty overnight. The smelly people are probably wearing the same clothes without washing.

WreckTangled · 10/01/2022 21:07

No way. I leave at 5:40 and try hard not to wake everyone up. I brush my teeth and obviously wear clean gym clothes. There's one person in my gym who stinks. Often BO but other times he swears out his curry from the night before 🤮 he's the only one I can ever smell.

PandoraP · 10/01/2022 21:08

No way and I don’t think I wake up that smelly. I shower in the evenings.

DrDreReturns · 10/01/2022 21:09

No. Complete waste of water.

Suzi888 · 10/01/2022 21:11

I do. But I think it’s a waste of time, water and end up showering three times a day. I probably do have issues surrounding cleanliness and hygiene though.

Omicrone · 10/01/2022 21:11

Oh FFS....

People don't 'smell musty' because they didn't have a shower before the gym. Why do so many MNers seem to have the sense of smell of a dog?!

Showering before you go go the gym? And we wonder why our planet is so fucked?

FeelingdownXmas · 10/01/2022 21:14

Why would you shower before doing a work out? Confused you're going to get sweaty again so what's the point?

KeyErro · 10/01/2022 21:15

I 100% agree with

Squirrelblanket · 10/01/2022 21:15

Hell no. If you smell that bad just from being asleep overnight then you have some kind of medical issue.

And if you are getting that close to people in the gym that you can smell them/their clothes then you also have a personal space issue.

Welshgal85 · 10/01/2022 21:16

Nope I don’t bother, just brush my teeth and quick spray of deodorant and then go!
